Amid talk of a drawdown of troops in Iraq, new statistics from the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans' Affairs (VA) show that US casualties are still climbing quickly. Iraq and Afghanistan battlefield injuries and deaths number 81,361, up from 72,043 last January, according to data obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request by Veterans for Common Sense (VCS). Veteran patients - including those who didn't seek care until their return home - shot up to 400,304 (from 263,909 in December 2007).

For the thousands of soldiers flooding the VA, mental illness tops the list of ailments.

This will be the Thread where the "Support the Troops" bumper sticker's tapdance in and tell us all how this isn't their problem because the VA has always been underfunded! To add insult to injury the will pretend that "No One Could Have Anticipated this Would Happen" when starting Two Wars at the Same Time -- (un)funded by Tax Breaks for the most wealthy!

We volunteer with an understanding that recieving a Purple Heart means your a lucky S.O.B. and that death is a possibility.

Regardless of what happens in our careers, these are decisions we have made with these factors in mind. Particularly if you join a Combat Arms branch as I have twice, on the ground as a Combat Engineer then in the air as an Attack and Cavalry Pilot.

What needs to be made clear and clear as water is that politics have nothing to do with these occurences. A soldier does not monitor political situations to make a Military Career. We make these decisions based upon love of country, and thats it.

I can be making ALOT more money as a Merc either on the ground or in the air. I can be making alot more money flying for the major airlines. I choose not to.

I can safely say all of my Comabt Arms brothers from all branches are in the same situation and yet we choose to contnue on this path, why? For love of country.

Don't turn this thing into one of your ridiculous left-tard, rushies or whatever stupid things you ppl call eachother. This is where I will say unless you have served, sacrificed or personally supported our decision you know not that which you speak of so don't try to come across as some kind of expert because your not.

The surge is working!

Or its keeping people working at the VA.

Hey Northguy ya aint too-bright r ya? caint make sens of letters an wurds and stuf?

That's quite alright, I understand, just get the nurse to change your diapers and don't forget to take your meds.

Hey, this is job creation and stimulus, right? We're creating the demand for more medical professionals to treat injured soldiers...

shock and awe. shock and awe. coming home to nothing but zero opportunity, foreclosed homes, shuttered workplace.

it was so worth it.

free dumb has won the war on terrorism.

good job W. your legacy will last for decades.

In an even somewhat functional republic the war pigs would have been removed from power after Sept 11.

It's all downhill from there.

but it was illegal to divulge these facts during Shrub's tenure.

as a US Marine, I say we should honor those that served. I served proudly and I along with Gen. Jim Jones, US Marine Commandant will serve our Commander in Chief President Obama. Those coming back with injuries need our support. Many on the left have proudly served our country, My brothers gave much, one his life the other his arm so do not insult us with "left-tard" comments. I have conservative friends that proudly serve and I don't insult them with "right-tard" comments. Those buried along side my brother in Punch Bowl are heros all not "left-tards" or "right-tards", you should apologize!

the only ideology US Marines have is "the Few, the Proud, the Marines"

The greatest honor we can pay those who put themselves in harms way is to only use them ONLY for altruistic, defensive purposes. The principals apon which this country was founded. In this respect the Coast Guard is a perfect example.

Nutcase I have to agree with you again. Unforutnately we are turned into a tool of the political process and then abused by a republic pissed off by 1 thing or another

I don't think anyone joins to attack in the name of the US, at least I didn't. It was to defend this land of ours.

Great comment.

Bush's stealth health care jobs stimulus plan....

Not one person that has posted on this thread has the guts or gumption to serve their country.

Think about that when you read their comments.

Primus - Mr. Krinkle

we all serve our country these day if you are a taxpayer....when the shit hits the fan we all serve...

Sure you did Mutant..sure you did.... that's why you are so flippant about American soliders and their injuries.

Where did you serve, what branch, were you injured in combat?

zeitgeist,

how would you know such a fact?

I know everything, I am Zeitgeist.

ok - I admit to my flippant ways - that is why I am mutanted - Perhaps I worked on the aftereffects of our nuclear endeavors in Japan. Top Secret of course so if I tell you details about me you will be terminated soon thereafter...

really now I commend all that serve in the service and cry to myself how many are now mained due to our recent campaigns. Only they know the real pain of their service - not us keyboard warriors.

I was in the 3rd Army, Pattons army.

1987 - 1991, I was there for the wall coming down in Berlin and for the 1st gulf war, where my legs were banged up pretty bad.

I'm the last cold war solider.

Thank you R! - good thing the cold war ended...but beware of new cold wars in the future...economic warfare is the new frontier it seems and that concept will soon become rather obvious.

It almost seems that people forget how GW 1 went - it was so quick it seemed easy but it was somewhat of a violent experience for many of the servicemen and women there. Lots of unknowns going into that.

My name is Rex, Mutant..and you're welcome man...

Your a nut dude

"I can be making ALOT more money as a Merc either on the ground or in the air. I can be making alot more money flying for the major airlines. I choose not to."

I have great respect and appreciation for people like you. I don't want to judge others who take government training and then use it for personal gain, I'm not in their shoes but they do not deserve the same respect as those who continue to serve in our military.

Not one person that has posted on this thread has the guts or gumption to serve their country.

Not one politician since WWII has championed a cause worthy of taking up arms.
