Anyone care to know what is actually IN the so-called "stimulus" bill? Here's just a few of the items the new administration insists will help rescue the US economy.
Before continuing, ask yourself, "What is the point of this bill? What is it intended to do?" If your answer is "To help stimulate the economy, create jobs, and prevent another depression", then please have a seat before you read further.
1. $1 billion for Amtrak, the federal railroad that hasn't turned a profit in 40 years;
2. $2 billion for child-care subsidies;
3. $50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts;
4. $400 million for global-warming research;
5. $2.4 billion for carbon-capture demonstration projects;
6. $650 million to pay for digital TV conversion coupons;
7. $8 billion for renewable energy funding;
8. $600 million more for the federal government to buy new cars;
9. $7 billion for modernizing federal buildings and facilities;
10. $150 million to The Smithsonian;
11. $81 billion for Medicaid'
12. $54 billion will go to federal programs that the Office of Management and Budget or the Government Accountability Office have already criticized as "ineffective" or unable to pass basic financial audits;
13. $2.5 billion for the National Science Foundation;
14. $2 billion for the National Park Service;
15. $650 million for the U.S. Forest Service;
16. $245 million to upgrade the information technology of the Farm Service Agency;
17. $750 million to ACORN
18. $100 million to reduce lead-based paint hazards for children in low income housing;
19. $400 million for "habitat restoration projects" of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration;
20. $2 billion for Superfund cleanup;
The Congressional Budget Office recently estimated that only $26 billion of the $355 billion in the stimulus bill would be spent this year, and only $110 billion by the end of 2010.
