The recitation of the presidential oath came in fits and starts, with Chief Justice John Roberts getting one word out of order and President Barack Obama rolling with it. "Close enough for government work," said NBC's Pete Williams.

LOL LOL LOL

First, Obama jumped in before the "do solemnly swear" phrase, which seemed to throw the chief justice off his stride. Roberts rendered the next phrase as "that I will execute the office of President to the United States faithfully."

"That I will execute," Obama repeated, then paused like a school teacher prompting his student with a slight nod. Roberts took another shot at it: "The off ... faithfully the pres ... the office of President of the United States."

So both screwed up and the headline is not totally honest.

So help you God?!?
-CJ Roberts

Last time I looked, it wasn't phrased like that. Obama's jump-in, technically, wasn't a goof. Roberts' changing the phrasing and substituting words was.

All in all...small potatoes.

What will be interesting is if the birth certificate crowd claims that he did not properly do the oath and is therefore not the president as a result.

So both screwed up and the headline is not totally honest.

This is just trivia, but I don't see how it is a screw up for Obama to say a phrase before Roberts expected him to.

Dibbla-not "if" but "when".

I don't see how it is a screw up for Obama to say a phrase before Roberts expected him to.

Obama made a mistake (neither man "screwed up") because he knows the pattern is for Roberts to say something and for Obama to repeat it. Obama, in his nervousness, jumped the gun and Roberts, who was doing it from memory, lost his place. Both men made a mistake and I was incorrect to use the term "screwed up".

For the 'birth certificate crowd'.....

Barack Hussein Obama officially became President at 12 noon oath or not.

Obama, in his nervousness, jumped the gun ...

Not according to MSNBC's transcript.

Regardless of who deserves the blame, I thought the goof was funny. I botched my justice of the peace wedding ceremony something awful.

Just to be clear, I married my wife, not the justice of the peace.

Roberts is a tool. He and other Bush appointees should be removed from the Court. The framers never envisioned a Court like the one we currently have where 5 NeoCons hold the entire country hostage.

Knows very little, give us all a frickin break. Roberts is an excellent Justice and none of them are neocons. Do you even know what neocon means? Why don't you look it up.

Not according to MSNBC's transcript.

RCADE,
The MSNBC story this headline is linked to says First, Obama jumped in before the "do solemnly swear" phrase, which seemed to throw the chief justice off his stride. Roberts rendered the next phrase as "that I will execute the office of President to the United States faithfully."

There is no blame, it is just something that happens when you have people doing something infront of other people. The idea that someone is to blame is the reason for all this stupid partisan BS we are stuck with.

RCADE,
While I have your attention, thanks for not banning me yesterday. I was not trying to be offensive, just funny and I sometimes miss the mark. 101 had nothing to do with those jokes, they were 100% of my creation.

How about off setting penalties and replay the down?

Fox News will blow this totally out of proportion! Hannityh will have his usual hissey fit.

And Fox will say it's Obama's fault.

What? no teleprompter?

What? no teleprompter?

That's why Chief Justice Roberts shouldn't have relied on his memory. Obama knew the oath and stopped, graciously, to give Roberts a chance to regroup and offer the correct wording.

So, if the Court doesn't fit your values, it has to be that the framers never envisioned it. Right.

Sounds like you're the tool.

When President Obama didn't say "uh", it through off Chief Justice Robert's timing.

Nice to have a pres that can think on his feet.

What would truly be gracious would be for you to acknowledge that both men made minor mistakes, instead of trying to cover your idol with a mantle of infallibility.

I didn't get to see but I did read the transcript... and it looked like they said nearly the same thing that was supposed to be said... The context still looked the same... No harm, no foul.

Well if it goes to the SCOTUS--Roberts will be one vote for Obama that the oath was completed.

Doesn't matter when the oath was recited. Obama became the President at noon EST regardless.

If obama has ever taken the 3rd degree masonic oath, he knows the words already. all except for the 'office of president' part.

I've revised the headline to indicate that both Roberts and Obama should practice a little more before Obama takes the oath again in 2012.

Minor glitch in an otherwise great Inauguration.

Chris Wallace on Fox already questioning legitamcy.

LOL! Called it.

So does anybod want to argue that since the oath was botched that transferrence of power didn't occur and that.....? Posted by Hagbard_Celine

Now that's funny! Well done.

it may be funny but I as a member of the loyal opposition will do whatever I can to help make it not possible

wow...common sense.....nice to see....not unexpected from you...MOST OF THE TIME>>>DUDE>..but still nice to see.........

It was fine. Roberts was nervous and Obama inserted the word "faithful[ly"] in a different place but it all made coherent grammatic sense. Good for him.

His inaugural address was magnificent, worth reading over and absorbing its import.

Obama screwed the pooch on the Oath and his speech was disappointing, boring and not memorable. Looking forward to 4 years of disappointment from the master of political smoke and mirrors.

It was nice to hear liberal commentators say how disappointing Obama's speech was. Lot of disappointment to go around in the next 4 years.

UTASTAFF

Bush won't be living all too far away.

You can have him. The rest of us are sick of him.

Want some cheese with that whine?

Roberts was too busy thinking "I can't believe I have to swear this n____r in to be President" and got distracted.

Oath or no oath...at 12 noon, Obama was officially the POTUS.

That's why Chief Justice Roberts shouldn't have relied on his memory. Obama knew the oath and stopped, graciously, to give Roberts a chance to regroup and offer the correct wording.

As silly as this all is, I indeed watched it several times and it's pretty clear. Obama stopped a few words into it, after he started repeating what Robert's had incorrectly said, and Obama smiled. Roberts then said it correctly, and Obama continued. Still, it's no big deal. What's stunning is how something that's crystal clear is still being interpreted though filters that have failed for so many years.

Doubt it?

ROTLMAO.....Suddenly Kanrei has it all figured out....Now if congress would just hold hands and sing Kumbayah.

Smoking to much crack.

It was nice to hear liberal commentators say how disappointing Obama's speech was.

They didn't but, what the heck, the right has to create a whole new set of delusions to get them through the next 8 years...

"Smoking to much crack."

Roberts always struck me as the scotch and sacramental wine type, but anybody could get nervous swearing in the guy who's going to lead America out of Bush's depression and win Bush's wars for him.

btw, anybody have any handle on how long it took to get those 2,000,000 people to sign loyalty oaths to Obama? Oh wait, this wasn't a Republican event....
