Frank Rich: I cannot testify to what black Americans feel as our nation celebrates the inauguration of our first African-American president. But I can speak for myself, as a white American who grew up in the segregated nation's capital of the 1960s. Barack Obama's day is one that I never thought would come, and one that I still can't quite believe is here.

Well, what was thought to be impossible will soon be a moment of history. An incredible journey which began before this nation had the audacity to claim and then fight for its own independence and identity has brought us to this particular junction of fate and opportunity. America stands poised to begin another era as we move toward an uncertain and precipitous future littered with the debris and problems of the recent past. It will not be a fresh start as it is a climb from a considerable hole of unknown depth.

But we all will make this climb together as a nation and a people known for resilience as much as brilliance. The moment is nigh.

What do you feel?

How does it impact you, your friends, your family?

What are your hopes and aspirations for our future and the destiny yet to be created?

What do you think and feel as America moves from what we've been to what we will be?

I don't give a crap about the color of his skin, and his rhetoric is meaningless high-sounding bullshit. I told you last year, Tony, that this asshole is on track to continue Bush's legacy of massive spending and war in the ME. He's going to finish the job of wrecking this country that Bush started. You're a damn fool.

Then color me one Ray, but I guarantee it is those like you who are the true fools to believe nothing can change the direction this country has been moving in. Do nothing but try and protect yourself and you'll die alone. I would rather perish in a vain attempt to rise than to follow you in doing nothing but moaning and bitching about things neither of us can individually change.

Obama has inspired the world to believe in their own abilities to affect change. All you do is piss down your leg and curse the rain.

You're mixed up, Tony, and terribly ignorant. Change in the wrong direction is only going to make matters worse. Obama hired the same appparatchiks who made this mess. They'll just do more of of the same as our economy goes spiraling down into the toilet. And God knows what kind of war he'll get us in.

I'm prepared for what is to come and you are not. Your dreams will turn into nightmares. So keep in touch so I can keep reminding you I told you so.

Know Dope, Ray, know dope.

You have no idea what I'm doing except chastising you for giving up faith in America's promise. The difference is the leader Ray, not just those surrounding him. We'll hold him accountable in a way Bush never was. That alone is a crucial difference.

I don't wish you harm, I wish you a kernal of hope that things improve instead of worsen. Whatever comes will come. We do what we can.

You write well Tony, but you're as stupid as shit. I'll be rubbing it in your face every time Obama fucks up. And he will. BIG TIME.

Attagirl Ray. You're proud to be an American, as long as the CIC is WHITE.

Snark - see my post at #2. You're a jerk.

Gee whiz Ray.

Getting much lately?

Ray's pissed because Libertarians make up less than 1% of the electorate...perhaps you should consider Denmark, pal.

I see I've picked up a couple of fans of Obama eager to get fleeced.

FTA: "In no other country on earth is my story even possible," Obama is fond of saying. That is true, and that is what the country celebrates this week. But it is all the tragic American stories that came before him, some of them still playing out in chilly streets just blocks from the White House, that throw both his remarkable triumph and the huge challenge ahead of him into such heart-stopping relief.

~Frank Rich.

Damn, that some good writing.

/obligatory

The election of Barack Obama is an exceedinglyly important event in the history of race relations in the United States but anyone who thinks that that book is closed for good aint been paying attention.

Rather it's the start of a new chapter and hopefully a better one than the previous ones.

If our nation has moved past the black/white issue (it probably never will, fully) then criticism of him won't be met with charges of racism.

~OohRah.

The meme that "any criticism of Obama is perceived by the left as racist" is an example of Rtard disingenuousness.

Make a racial comment about Obama and you'll be called to task for it.

Criticise or question his policies and hopefully some decent debate can arise.

Nice to see that OohRah doesn't number himself amongst the asswipes on the right who have already declared the Obama presidency a failure despite the fact that he hasn't taken office yet.

A lot of the problems in DC are entrenched and systemic and no one person can possibly turn America overnight into a wonderland where unicorns dance and sings and puppies shit rainbows.

Sad fact of the matter is that under the reign of Error that wsa BushCo America was on a course towards a perpetual dystopia. There will be no utopia created by Barack Obama but at least he can steer the ship of state away from the rocks of ruin and turn it towards a path that leads to a better future for all.

"A more perfect union" and all that.

Spud lives in hope.

/Where else ya gonna live?

Nice find, Tony.

Be Well.

/Even Canadians are wishing Obama well on his innaugural, in fact much of the world is.
//See Also: Breathing a ginourmous sigh of relief that the Worst. POTUS. EVAR. is going the way of the dodo.

Why are you even HERE, shitheap?

You gave your word that if the child was Bristol's, we;d never hear from you again.

Well, it's proven. And you, like Obama, are a lying sack of shit who promises one thing and then does the opposite.

Scum.

Nice piece, but Rich misses the point completely: The only color that matters anymore?

Green.

Fix that, sir, and we're going somewhere.

Nice to see that OohRah doesn't number himself amongst the asswipes on the right who have already declared the Obama presidency a failure despite the fact that he hasn't taken office yet.

I guaruntee you this:

There are a lot more asswipes on the left who have already declared the Obama presidency a tremendous success than there are asswipes on the right who claim his presidency is a failure prior to even taking office.

As for me...I'll wait and see.

I have to say tht I agree with Ray "the doomsayer" on this one, folks, at least as far as the larger point. Obama will, in the end, continue to follow the path that the nation currently finds itself on. Not because he wants to, mind you. I doubt any sane individual would actually desire to continue on this path, and I give Obama credit for sanity. Not because he wants to, but because those who pull the strings behind the scenes want to.

As a nation, we will suffer, and eventually die. I will not lay the blame on the politician, however; he at least seems honest enough in his desire to correct the course. But those who hold the true power, they won't allow a course correction, because that eats into their profits, and more importantly the influence they hold, and they'll never allow it.

Welp Obama's Presidency hasn't even begun and yet He has done more to engage the American Populace than any ordinary "White Dude" could ever. Sure Obama has a daunting task ahead of Him by no measure of sucess or failure will tarnish what He has already achieved being the first Black Man ever to be elected to the highest office in the land. A Feat that on a day like today being it's Martin Luther King Jr's birthday A dream can and does come true. Where the color of ones skin was rated not as important as the character of the Man. I say to that Kuddos Obama for You achieved in part MLK Jr's dream.

As for me...I'll wait and see.

Agreed. I'll support him but I'll wait till applying scrutiny.

Obama's Presidency hasn't even begun and yet He has done more to engage the American Populace than any ordinary "White Dude" could ever.

You may want to consider Obama actually accomplishing something in office before lavishing such praise.

Ebs,

I am very encouraged by the fact that Obama has already broken almost every one of his stupid campaign promises. It suggests to me that once in power, he's more thoughtful, careful and responsible than the wackiness he successfully employed in order to get elected.

Here's to hoping he governs well and responsibly.

PS - What's sad for him is that his worst enemy is his rabid supporters. When I watch a sporting event on TV and the announcers can't stop gushing about a certain star athlete I find myself rooting against said athlete. This doesn't stem from a desire to see said athlete fail. It's simply a desire to squelch the ridiculous hype.

Some would label such hype as 'deification'.

However, point out said 'deification' and those deifying go apeshit and pretend that ALL of the adoration is perfectly normal.

Can you think of a better term to describe this phenomenon that the Obamamaniacs might actually acknowledge?

As much now I critisize obama I have to laugh at this.

For 8 years we have listen to you gush and worship bush and that great republican right mantra and now you same righties come on and post about the other side giving support to the next president who has not even taken office yet.

How can you even think we should take your demagoguery of politic thought with validity.

What those Gushing sounds that You hear spewed forth by We Obama Fans is part adoration for someone we can look upto as well as the gushing from being drowned in adbject worry and grief at how Our Country has been Governed these past 8 long gruelling years. You Bushites don't understand it because You supported a horse that should have been sent to the rendering factory even before He got to the starting gate. We have seen what Your "Product" has wrought upon this grand nation and we are just gushing by the prospects of gaining some breathing room. Someday when You are old and gray and had time to reflect upon Your dastardly deeds You too will say Those Obamaites weren't so wrong in their Gushing praises onto someone who challenged them and tried to assure them that there is a new day that this Ship of State might FINALLY be in capable hands once again. To the Bushites I say You had Your chances and blew them not once but twice. Time to STFU

Um...OK.

A simple perusal of my post-history will show that I am actually pretty supportive of Obama.

If he performs well, you'll hear about it on this blog.

If he performs poorly, you'll hear about it on this blog.

At least from me.

PS - I am not entirely clear what the thrust of your re-produced post was, so if my response is non-sensical to you, I suggest one of the following:

1. Re-read and clarify your original post as your communication skills via a keyboard aren't exactly stellar.

2. Recognize me for the idiot that I am and ridicule me accordingly.

Personally, I recommend #2, but in doing so I create a bit of a paradox...

Revisionist history at it's finest ehhhhhh JeffJ?? How many AmericanThinker blogs did You make in castigating Obama on everything from supposedly being a Muslim that attends wahabis to not wearing a stupid flag pin to all the Gushing You spewed forth upon Sarah palin while condemning Obama in the process. I can't count the number but it's more than 20 cause I ran out of 8 fingers 2 thumbs and 10 toes to count with. You Bushites have revisionist studies down pat don't You??

Exactly how I feel.

However, in jeffs case, while he may kick obama a bit unfairly sometimes...

He is fairer than most, and admitted bush sucked long looong ago.(still voted for him, but nobodies perfect. One step at a time, I guess)

Speaking of deification...

Is reagan still the republican jesus? Just askin'.

Larry,

"Bushites" have nothing on very young boys.

Both of my boys from the ages of 3-5 managed to drop bombs that would rip my ass apart!

My wife did some reading and claims that is "normal". I claim 'bullshit' - pun intended, of course.

I argue that it stems from a lack-of breast-feeding and that in order to properly prepare I should "practice" at the trough. Regrettably, she saw through my feeble ploy.

Seriously though - apparently young boys force out tremendous dung...after witnessing some of my boys' tropies I'd be inclined to say that child-birthing has nothing on his....Except that my wife would likely make sure that I spend a considerable amount of time celibate as a result of such a comment. So, I choose to remain mum.

If you don't understand the post then your to stupid and dumb to be here posting.

I made a statement which I fully intended to back, but the fact remains that my contention has never been proven wrong by actual documentation, only by inference. Until the day comes when such documentation becomes public, I'd say lay off the accusations because I'm not breaking my word. All you've got is the same type of speculation that I do without a shread of actual evidence other than words. This is the truth of the matter as it stands today.

Its funny that so many are obsessed with what I stated about myself with no provocation from anyone but my own speculative nature and feelings. I've hurt no one, and I've told no lies (exaggerations and hyperbole don't count) as it regards anyone else. Especially when every one of my detractors believes the words of a person under multiple ethical investigations, calling her own honesty into question, and having been caught red-handed in a scandalous series of lies and obfuscations already documented.

Soheifox, you can ignore whatever I write. My words are not for you or your obsessive perversions. Live your life in peace and save your commentary for those who care what you think. I am not one of those, nor do I respond to the drivel you spew on this blog. I'm happy that I bother you to the degree I must. It puts a smile on my face to known I irritate you so. As a matter of fact, you've just made my day!

Again!!!! Guess you didn't read it then, so you can read it now.

Tony, I apologize for the insult at #7. I had misread you to say you do wish me harm.

I stand by my assertion that this is going to be a disastrous presidency; his powers are almost on the dictatorship level. There is no need to wait to judge him. Obama is committed to expanding the power of government. That could only mean further loses in civil and economic liberties. We are no longer living in a Constitutional Republic. America as sunk to the level of a Banana Republic.

Ray...

Many of us don't have the means nor wealth to simply hunker-down as the black clouds form on the horizon. We have to keeping working and keep trying to make what we can out of what we have to work with. I know why you feel as you do and the facts you base your predictions upon. You've always been more right than wrong.

I cannot live with the cynicism and negativity that you seem to embrace. I believe in hope and I believe that goodness can overcome evil when that goodness is allowed to grow. I don't own gold Ray, I keep the faith that things can and will get better like they always have before throughout America's storied and stormy history. Maybe enough people have awoken from their malaise to see all that you recite as wrongs and just maybe they are willing to fight the power and right much thats been ignored in the recent past.

Only time will tell whether hope or cold reality wins out in the end. I pray that you're wrong.

Why do libs keep insisting that Obama is black? He is half white genetically and he was raised white culturally. Rev Wight tried to teach him how to whine, complain and blame everything on Whitey, but I don't think it took.

"Why do libs keep insisting that Obama is black?"

We learned it from Rush.....Barack the Majic Negro.....Colin Powell's endorsement....all about race!!!

Seems that us libs are far less concerned about what race President Obama is than right wing trolls.

"There is no need to wait to judge him."

Often poster's own words rebut themselves.

I stand by my assertion that this is going to be a disastrous presidency; his powers are almost on the dictatorship level. Well there is a rightwingnut trump card pulled out of the hat. If they don't agree with policies... they are dictators... big government... blah blah.

Historically speaking capitalistic policies have always precedes bigger government and makes socialism more attractive. Just like it has done now.

TONYROMA

If you don't mind me saying....who are you? Your writing and content have made me just shiver. Your points have been so accurately and eloquently written that I am literally gushing. Great story, great commentary, great threads, great manners. Cheers to you whoever you are and whatever you do. I hope you are using this amazing talent in something you get paid for.

Applause, standing ovation

I guaruntee you this:

There are a lot more asswipes on the left who have already declared the Obama presidency a tremendous success than there are asswipes on the right who claim his presidency is a failure prior to even taking office.

~Jeff J.

Because you have hard data on this, presumably?

Face it, Jeff, Obama's proved himself a better public speaker and a far more inspiring leader than Dumbya could even dream about.

That's a type of success in that doesn't require him to even be in office.

In terms of your "he's broken every promise" rhetoric Spud is that's the sour grape whine talking and not you.

While it is true that America's democracy has devolved into a corporate duopoly, a two sided coin where heads they win tails you lose and that the so-called free market is one of massive interference by the government in order to further enrich the elite who really run things Spud still maintains that if any meaningful change can be affected within the context of that grim reality then Barack Obama is the guy to do it.

Basically, if he can't then no one can.

Bush not only didn't try but all his efforts made things immeasurably worse.

Viewed in that context Obama presidency can, at the very least, be judged as superior to the BushCo reign of errors even before he takes office.

In terms of "wait and see", Spud suggests you do that and observe how lefties are more inclined to be construcitvely critical of their leaders and how much of an improvement that is over the rights dangerous and blind hero worship that we've observed over the last eight years.

Be Well.

If you don't mind me saying....who are you?

Just one person with a voice hoping that the things I say may resonate with my fellow citizens so that they may raise their voices as well. I care deeply about this nation and us its citizens. I am proud to be alive at this moment in time even though many lives are frought with peril and need throughout this truly blessed land of plenty.

I seek to work toward building concensus instead of raising animus. We're all in this mess together and our destinies are inextricably intertwined as is our fate. I hope the world we leave our young children continues to inspire them to dream bigger dreams and to work toward greater hopes and aspirations than have so far been realized.

I am merely a lowly marker of time's unending march toward eternity. Thanks for caring enough to share your thoughts. Condemnation comes easy...admiration, not so much.

TONYROMA
Do you do this for a living....i mean your talent for witing and oratory?

TONYROMA

Dear Tony,

I, too, am more often than not smitten with your eloquence, your charm, and your sheer ability to break and ride the english language to do the bidding of your marvelous intellect. Every paragraph is a foray into ecstasy for the senses---exciting, unpredictable, even scary at times; but always with a sense of having been made a better human being for absorbing them. The delicate nuance, the deft points, and almost unearthly ability to convey 150 word concepts via 1000+ word works of art is humbling to all of us. I am yours, Tony. Van Gogh had but one canvas upon which to paint one masterpiece---but you....you have a million such canvasas every time your fingers touch the keyboard and blanket us with your written Truth. Go forth, Sage---for I hunger for your text.

"my contention has never been proven wrong by actual documentation, only by inference."

Notwithstanding the fact that your self-imposed bet made no mention of a documentation requirement, it seems silly to require someone to produce labor and delivery records that they have no access to. Admitting you were wrong without hiding behind such an obviously impossible requirement would be the honest thing to do.

Trig was born 4/18/2008, Bristol has now given birth to Tripp on 12/27/2008. I'm no pregnancy expert, but I'm guessing it takes at least a couple of weeks after you deliver one baby before you can get pregnant again. Which means Tripp would have had to have been born in under 8 months, which isn't likely since he weighs over 7 pounds.

Of course, don't let facts like "birthdates" get in your way - you need documentation that nobody has access to before you admit you're wrong. You of all people should know how foolish that is.

Regardless Joe, I'm truly curious why so few are so enraged that an anonomous person on a global blog might actually NOT retire forever because they overloaded their fingers with their feet?

Why does it matter to anyone so much? Do I threaten the space-time continuum by being here? My intentions were pure, now probably misguided, but still why is this an issue? Do I owe you money? Am I a threat to your existence? I guess I could tell everyone to eff-off for even bringing it up, but I stayed away for quite a long time before I posted again.

I know this: I'll never make such a stupid boast again. It wasn't worth the grief, nor is my presence or absence worth so much consternation and conversation.

Condemn me for going against my word, but when I feel like speaking, I will continue to speak even though I have so openly broken my self-administered vow of perpetual silence.

Only Joe the Mouth cares about it, so I would just keep posting and ignore that whiner.

It doesn't matter to me whether you post here or not, other than the fact that you've added yourself to the list of drama queens who claim they're leaving the site forever and then show up a month or two later. What matters more is that, up until now, you've hidden behind evidence you know nobody can produce when all other facts tend to indicate you were wrong. For someone who claims to be such a neutral purveyor of facts, an unbiased guy who just wants to bring Americans together, your partisanship seems to have clogged your brain when it comes to Sarah Palin and her children.

No, Joe, I still wonder why something as simple as a single document from the hospital of record wasn't produced by Sarah Palin when she promised to do just that over 4 months ago!

Not only that, but her circuitous route from Texas back to Wasilla has been villified by pediatricians who claim such a journey was tanamount to fetal abuse if her water had indeed broken as the story goes. Sorry, but many find holes in her story, though I will agree the timing NOW gives me pause to further such ideas without more direct concrete evidence.

Sarah Palin could have ended this story before it took off. She didn't. Nothing "personal" had to be publicized, just the simple hospital record of the birth we read in newspapers everyday. There wasn't one for Trig. Her doctor has avoided any statements him/herself. Things still don't add up, but its her life. She isn't our VP-elect so frankly, I could care less now. May her family live and prosper without any skepticism or comment from me.

But when she was trying to place herself at the highest level of elected office, her veracity, knowledge and candor are certainly fair game to assess her character. Based on the preponderance of evidence, I personally found it quite lacking and unworthy of such an intellectually challenging position such as VP for a man already striken with cancer. And yes, thats MY opinion.

If TONY ROMA wants to come and go, that's fine with me. One of the best posters ever to visit here.

Zed AIN'T dead!

Thanks.

Sorry Tony--

But for you to insist on a birth certifcate for Trig is asinine.

As for Obama--I want him to succeed, for the sake of the country--but I won't hold by breathe.

Ray has more truth in his posts--sorry to agree.

Is this historic--sure! It's the first black man, or man of color to be POTUS.

But don't try to make this more than that.

He hasnt done anything and much of the repair --if you want to call it that--was already laid out with the TARP and bailouts done by Bush.

Will any of this shit work--have to wait and see.

But Obama is on track to out spend Bush 10 fold.

We are in deflation right now and the period of inflation is right around the corner--hang onto your hats for that...

As for hope? Yeah I hope he doesn't phuck up too bad.

Why the Drudge Report keeps quoting the biggest ASSHOLE reporter and fabricator of the news is beyond me. He works for the New York Slime which is going down the tubs and he is one of the reason why.

Talking of ASSHOLES, that includes you DANFORTH!

Drudge, the more you quote Rich and Dowd, the more you lose creditability with NON-ASSHOLE participants.

Of course when Condi Rice was appointed sec.state, there was no continuous replaying of MLK's "I have a dream" speech on our radios and tv's.

And when Clarence Thomas became a supreme court judge there was no replaying of MLK's "I have a dream" speech anywhere in the media or Sunday news shows.

Nope, today's national orgasm has little to do with celebrating a black person ascending the ranks in politics. To be sure, this is about celebrating the ideology of a certain black man and pretending it's about race and dreams realized.

Indeed if it were a Clarence Thomas who was on the nation's stage today receiving his beatification, there would be no celebration of an African American rising to the position of American President. Instead there would be scorn and ridicule.

Quit fooling yourselves Libtards. You're giddy cuz libtardom is on parade today, and what a great bonus that he wears a black face!
