In another testament to the sinking US economy, Circuit City has announced it will dispose of 567 stores without anyone picking up the brand -- and liquidate existing merchandise, AP reports. The second-biggest electronics retailer in the nation couldn't find a buyer.

Try and get service on that iPod now!

You didn't buy an extended warranty, did you?

567 Stores.

That's a lot of commercial property.

Could this be the next step in the crash?

Could this be the next step in the crash?

No. It is an adjustment that was needed. People were buying way too much of that shit with money they didn't have. Now that some sense of sanity has been established someone had to go in that industry.

I saw them on a warning list last Oct. I can't find the list, but I remember Lane Bryant was on it.

Yes, you do that. Maybe she should cut back on the curds and whey.

Yes. It is part of a domino effect. People weren't buying because they didn't have the money--the market was there, but the capital wasn't. Now 30,000 more people are moving on to the next domino. Those 30,000 will be cutting way back on expenses until they find a job--which is getting to be a rare thing.

The people weren't buying things with money they didn't have--they had jobs. America was built on credit. Now the jobs are going, and the more jobs that are lost---causes more jobs to be lost. As the story says--share holders of Circuit City get nothing. The same thing could happen to any of your stock. Want to protect yourself and pull your money out now? Brilliant---you along with millions of others can start a real panic--or leave your money sit and risk losing it all. Kind of like the choice of which foot to shoot. This all started with the deregulation--the smaller government--the rightists alawys talked about--and finally achieved with the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act--the first domino..

I think Circuit City was run poorly and just couldn't compete with Best Buy and online retailers.

I did not like the layout of Circuit City and would often goto BestBuy because their store was planned better. The massive circle design that was most CC was just annoying when you knew what you wanted and were not browsing.

It is really a shame all those people will lose their jobs. I hope somehow this economy begins to bottom out pretty soon before we are all unemployed.

Hoepfully Circuit City will have some great discounts on the new Super Dupa Hoola hoopa Bose system

They screwed up when they laid off all their associates and tried to bring in cheaper workers. People boycotted them for it.

Yeah, your trite and true bullshit "retorts" bore the fuck out of me too. Here's a quarter, buy some new schtick.

I heard rumors in December. Before Christmas the nearest Circuit City "sales team associate" assured me that it was not so, that CC would be around forever. Such lies do not inspire consumer confidence, makes one wonder about warranties, service and all that. herm

Incidentally, will Wisgod now become Wasgod? herm

I'd like to say "Bush's Fault", but even though it really is his fault its even more Bernanke, Geithner, Gramm, Greenspan, Rubin, and Summers fault. They have more power in the grand conspiracy to defraud the middle class. Clinton played a role similar to Bush.

You are not permitted a policy choice. You are permitted a personality choice. But, as Ron Paul reminded us, POLICY MATTERS.

"I don't see that signing [Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act] had anything to do with the current crisis. Indeed, one of the things that has helped stabilize the current situation as much as it has is the purchase of Merrill Lynch by Bank of America, which was much smoother than it would have been if I hadn't signed that bill ... On the Glass-Steagall thing, like I said, if you could demonstrate to me that it was a mistake, I'd be glad to look at the evidence."

Um... Bank of America was bailed out today to prevent it from collapsing.

Have the Republicans ever done anything right?

Circuit City had a bad business model that ultimately doomed them.

makes one wonder about warranties, service and all that.

Service at CC? Haha

Warranties? Manufacturers don't care where you bought the item (unless it's gray market)

Extended warranties? Usually backed with an insurance policy.

I watched CompUSA go through this same process. In 2000 they started laying off techs and senior sales reps. I decided that absent some decent service I might as well buy online. That's what is killing the brick and mortar box stores now.

I think Circuit City was run poorly and just couldn't compete with Best Buy and online retailers.

I think on-line shopping is going to be the death of alot of these store fronts.

Clinton was a republican who didn't try to force women to use coat hangers.

All you need to know about Circuit city.

"Clinton was a republican who didn't try to force women to use coat hangers."

Actually so was Bush's daddy until he decided to run for president and had to cow-tow to the religious conservatives.

This is an opportunity for Wal Mart to open 567 mini Wal Marts.

Circuit Shitty is hiring Assassins now?

What-too many of their Electronics live too long?

I think Circuit City was run poorly and just couldn't compete with Best Buy and online retailers.

Please be specific as to why you think this. Was it a difference in business models? Please be specific.

No, pleople like to see the difference in picture quality in person. Plus they lke to go out shopping.

MANY posters here swore they'd never do biz with cc again, when they cut commissions to the sales force. There was endless banter wishing them death. Now that it happened I'm not surprised those comments are totally forgotten, and Bush is blamed.

That's how the dr left operates....NOT with a full deck!!!!!

"Clinton was a republican who didn't try to force women to use coat hangers."

No, just Cigars.

Credit is slavery disguised as deserved luxury.

If you can't pay cash, the fiscally responsible solution is to not go into debt.

Granted, housing is not included in the equation.

I am one of the people who stopped shopping at CC when they laid off the experienced sales force.

I am also glad they paid the ultimate price for it in an abstract sense, but I feel for the folks that lost their jobs.

I know what they are going through because it happened to me when the telecom equipment market went south and ended my career early.

It ain't fun.

Nope, not at all.

Well then thanks for the post, ass breath. You seem to have a bad habit of replying to them.

StillGod, Herm.

Considering all of the problems I have had with them, this isn't surprising. The have however a "new division"-Tiger Direct. It is internet only but as bad at resolving things as their parent company.

Ever try to buy a plane ticket or rent a car?

See post #23.

Or better yet:

Circuit City became complacent a fatal mistake in the fiercely competitive and fast-evolving retail-electronics industry. The problems began a decade ago, when Circuit City failed to secure prime real estate its out-of-the-way locations were often just inconvenient enough to tempt customers to head to other retailers, like Wal-Mart. Then Circuit City stopped selling appliances. It didn't move as aggressively into gaming as it should have. And it missed out on big in-store promotions with thriving companies like Apple Computer. That created an opening for Best Buy, now the top electronics chain in the U.S., to surge ahead. Finally, the cherry on top: Circuit City neglected to improve its Web presence, just as online retailers like Amazon.com were hitting their stride.
