President-elect Barack Obama took the next big step in his Republican charm offensive on Tuesday night, dining at the Chevy Chase, Md., home of syndicated columnist George Will with conservative pundits William Kristol, David Brooks and Charles Krauthammer.

Isn't it nice to think we're actually going to HAVE a Commander-In-Chief?
That is...

You could sure learn by example!

The odd-couple gathering led to speculation that Rush Limbaugh, who said that he was in D.C. for a "secret meeting," was also in attendance. "I'm just offering, a personal trip, nobody even has to know about this," the notorious and combative talk show host wrote on his website.

Rush's idea of keeping it a 'secret' is to post it on his website?

A reluctant yet hearty FF for Wisgod!

And a "damn straight" flag for Skizziks.

I actually enjoy reading David Brooks, although I don't often agree with him. I think he's an incredibly intelligent and dispassionate thinker who says things that need to be heard. I respect George Will as well, and even Krauthammer and Kristol make a point occasionally.

Obama met with these guys, and all the ex-presidents as well, because he LISTENS before acting. He's smart enough to know what he doesn't know. No one has a monopoly on wisdom. No one person, party, or nation has all the answers. We can learn from those who seem to be our ideological opponents. Listen, absorb, ponder, and then act with the confidence of someone who has considered everything there is to offer.

Bravo.

"Duh, I wonder if they served fried chicken and collared greens?"

Bravo.

Funny how these same individuals are crucified here as the reason for the demise of America. But when their own interacts all of the sudden they become smart and wise?

I should state for the record that I consider Rush Limbaugh to be a needlessly provocative assclown of the highest order - even if he too is sometimes capable of making a valid point.

Nonetheless, I would have no objection to having Obama meet with him. After all, just look at the global landscape of assclowns, including Putin, Ahdamenijad, Chavez, Castro, etc. They're not going to go away just because you ignore them.

Time will tell.

Brooks and Will occasionally have a salient point or two to progress the national dialogue but Krauthammer and Kristol are simply propaganda spewing lie factories and overly smug shitheads who are total WOBs.

Where's all the Rtards talking shit about Obama being some kind of radical leftist/ Marxist/ Communist now?

There are no true liberals in government anymore or conservatives for that matter. Both sides are essentially corporately directed centrists who only run left and right during election season and then return to the center to rule like the coporate duopoly they are.

That sed, after eight years of unrelenting stupidity, corruption and self destructive policies under CHENEY/bush legion of Doom the equivilancy argument between the two parties has flown right out the window.

As long as the seeds of wedge issue politics (ie gays, guns, and abortion) have been successfully sown to distract from the more important and pressing issues of the day (ie the economy, overspending on the MIC, wealth and justice inequality) this scenario is not likely to change significantly.

Do you think they play games over at Will's place when he throws a party?

Twister?

Pictionary?

Mad-libs, perhaps?

Be Well.

Obama may not be too bright but at least he knows that all the brain power is on the right. My invitation to the party must be still in the mail.

Mensa Thom

So did Kristol wait until dessert to suggest that if we nuked all the ME cities and then force the remaining muslims to convert to pentecostalism and hand their oil fields over to Israel we'd actually be greeted as liberators and it would only cost $1.97, or did he blurt it out over the apertifs?
Obama can talk to all the righties he likes, but for the good of the Nation, he should have had his Secret service guys whack Kristol.

Did Maddow give him any bedroom tips?

Did the right tell him to repeal the Patriot Act?

This must really piss off most of the righties here because they know that Obama can hold conversation with the likes of Will about real issues, unlike their false-prophet Dubya.

That's gotta sting.

I "sho' nuf" hope Republicans allow the real conservatives like 101 to doom their chances of ever winning another national election.

"Did the right tell him to repeal the Patriot Act?"

With Obama as CinC I wouldn't be surprised.
The same tools they "needed" probably frighten them to death when in the hands of someone from the other side of the aisle.

The guy that voted for it is going to repeal it...

Well, he does say one thing and do another. Hope and Change...hahahahaha, you gullible shits.

Barney,
Don't be angry, those are Obamas words.

Hell, he can't repeal it now with Bush on the outside, when his grand pappy was in that position he and his fascist buddies tried to overthrow FDR in a coup attempt. No, Obama will need the Patriot Act to keep an eye on angry subversive Republicans.
There was already a thread about these creeps elsewhere on DR.

In other words Danni, what ever Obama does will be the right choice.

You hate the Patriot Act, and if Obama makes it null and void you'll cheer him and sing his praises.

If he keeps it and adds to it you'll sing his praises.

You're a fucking sap.

FDR in a coup attempt.

Danni -- this is the third time you've mentioned this coup attempt. I've asked for a link to it and after you failed to provide it, I looked myselfr and couldn't find one.

Where do you get this story from?

"The guy that voted for it is going to repeal it..."

Isn't that how "live and learn and change accordingly" works?

"You're a fucking sap."

Better a sap than a troll.
Better to give Obama a chance before stupidly claiming to know what he will do or not do.
I do detest part of the Patriot Act, I read Obama's speech on the floor of the Senate about the renewal of it and the changes he and most other Dems thought necessary and he and I are pretty much in agreement. Of course those changes didn't make it into the bill because of Republican control of the Senate, we'll see what happens now.

Ail,
I don't know about that, but it appears to be how Obama works. It's known in most circles as "say one thing, do another", or "over-promise, under-deliver".

Obama is finding out that the President Elect can't vote "present".

The next 4 years are going to be fun.

Just one of many links available.

"The Business Plot (also the Plot Against FDR and the White House Putsch) was according to an congressional investigation a political conspiracy in 1933 wherein wealthy businessmen and corporations plotted a coup d'tat to overthrow United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1934, the Business Plot was publicly revealed by retired Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler testifying to the McCormack-Dickstein Congressional Committee. In his testimony, Butler claimed that a group of men had approached him as part of a plot to overthrow Roosevelt in a military coup. One of the alleged plotters, Gerald MacGuire, vehemently denied any such plot. In their final report, the Congressional committee supported Butler's allegations of the existence of the plot, but no prosecutions or further investigations followed, and the matter was mostly forgotten." - Wikipedia

This is only OK to me if Obama set the place on fire as he was leaving and the Secret Service guarded the exits to prevent their escape.

Corporately directed, yes. Centrists?? How are policies redistributing wealth from ordinary Americans to the very rich "centrist"?

I think you're getting distracted, Spud. "Better than Bush/Cheney" is nowhere near good enough.

On the bright side, if Obama stays on the track he's been following, it should be a lot easier for third party candidates to gain some traction.

I don't know how that speech didn't get more media play. His willingness to sell out communities like Beaumont to score points with racist whites a couple days before the Ohio and Texas primaries was a defining moment.

In other words, Bush and Obama are the same. Hell Obama is even keeping a bunch of Bush's people.

So, with that in mind, do you admit you're a fool and fell for Hope and Change when anyone with a lick of common sense knew it was bullshit?

Phoenix,
Obama talking jive is one thing, but how is it any different than this (besides the fact people actually talked about this)?

www.youtube.com

"Yet nothing was done, no followup."

Sort of like Watergate or Iran Contra.

But.....Clinton got a BJ and OMG! couldn't investigate enough, needed a full on impeachment.

"So, with that in mind, do you admit you're a fool and fell for Hope and Change when anyone with a lick of common sense knew it was bullshit?"

I don't know how effective it is to get people to your side by calling them a "fool". If Repubs keep doing that, they could be in the wilderness for quite a spell.

People should always vote with a sense of hope and for change. And every president does deliver on that. Not necessarily to everyone's liking, especially not to that of those who voted against him. But to think that things do _not_ change from one administration to another in significant degree does qualify for the appellation of "fool".

Obama talking jive is one thing... -- #47 | Posted by 101Chairborne

It's not the talking jive that bothered me. It was the fact that he did everything but call them lazy watermelon-eating n---'s, and did it right before 2 important primaries.

Spud sed it best:

So Obama will take the troops outta Iraq but no timeline guarantee.

Obama will close Gitmo but it'll take longer than he figured.

Obama will try for progressive taxation but not just yet?

Is that pretty much how it's going?

Meh, the corporate duopoly rolls on.

And on and on ...and over the vast majority all the while pretending there's a hair's worth of difference between the two parties.

While Obama/Biden are still better than McCain/Palin it's getting harder and harder to make the case why.

And he's not even in office yet.

Well, the change thing always was a long shot.

aaahhhhhhh the peace loving liberals strike again.

Obama is erudite, and Will is probably the smartest person writing opinion pieces today. I would think the dinner conversation between them would be interesting.

Will is a conservative, and despite shrill claims to the contrary, Obama is certainly not. So, they would be in disagreement on many issues, but in what may be a news flash to the hourly posters here, you can stay polite and disagree at the same time.

Sometimes, you can even persuade others with logic and facts, and not even use slogans! (another news flash for bloggers)

(I doubt Obama started yelling "We hate Bush" at dinner)

So called conservatives on this blog would despise Obama if he was the busy bearded molotov cocktail tosser they tried to paint him as... (as would I)

And they will despise him for not living up to that cartoon.

And they will despise him for being pragmatic.

And they would despise him for acting too quickly.

And they will despise him for supposedly backtracking.

And they will despise him because he's just too damn good, and they're going to have a hell of a time tearing him down. He's no Bill Clinton. He's better and the country -- most of it -- wants him to succeed. The right strikes out.
