As a four-foot high wall of water prevented her escape, Jan McLemore of Gilchrist, Texas, sent a text message acknowledging her mistake of staying behind: "It is too late to leave. Pray for me." She was one of 41 who died during the storm.

At least she didn't blame FEMA and Bush like those MF's in New Orleans.

MF's in New Orleans??? Wow is all I can say.

Idiots in New Orleans is all I can say.

Sad story. Bolivar Peninsula was pretty much wiped out by Ike - almost nothing left standing, especially the homes anywhere near the water. The biggest problem was that the storm surge hit well in advance of the storm, leaving people little time to get out if they changed their minds. The biggest surprise was that "only" 42 people died, although there are still hundreds missing.

Must be some youth elixir in Texas drinking water?

Her photo looks more like she was 24 years old than age 58.

But seriously, here's what I honestly don't understand. She lived in a spot called Bolivar Island and there was a
predicted cat 4 hurricane heading her way.

She had 6 siblings and, out of four ex-husbands, two were still living.

Even if she had minimum brain cells -- which seems to be the case for anyone who would stay on an ((( island ))) with a cat 4 hurricane rushing in to shore -- WHY didn't any of her 6 siblings or even one of her two "ex's living in Texas" (love that song too, hahaha) go over to her home and physically remove her to a safe spot?

They had to have known she would be in mortal danger living on a island.

Fuck those New Orleans A-holes. Most of them came here and did nothing but raise our crime rates. Yes, I feel bad for the ones who are law abiding but they seem to be in the minority.

Go figure..........

Have to agree, CC. I stayed but am inland in Houston. I honestly didn't think it would be as bad as the hype but spent two days emptying containers of water every 10 minutes from what was coming in through my ceiling. No way I would have stayed if I lived on Bolivar though.

You can take the person out of "the hood".

No doubt, Cabo. I actually watched one of those 'Gangland' episodes on the History Channel and the whole show was about the New Orleans gangs who ended up in Houston. They ended up going back when they found our laws were tougher than theirs.

Cabo-
That was not a sentence.

Is English your first language, or are you an import?

What is your point?

EVERLONG

You live in Houston so maybe your opinion might be a little bit biased, but is it as bad as some say? I've been told you're always drenched from the humidity and the city is a mish mash of roads and a problem with traffic and the Gulf beaches aren't all that nice. But that was only one opinion I received so I'd like some others.

I'm not putting Houston down, just want to know what you think of Houston since you actually live there. I'm checking out a few states (and cities within them) for when I move. Are there fairly good paying jobs available -- other than being physically able to work in an oil field? lol

Also, as I'll be renting for the first 6 months to a year when I first move, what do 2-bedroom apts. run for in Houston? In an area of Houston where I don't have to have steel bars on all my windows as is required in some areas of Los Angeles! Or would some smaller surrounding Houston suburbs be a better bet? I'd like to live in town as I'd prefer a little more action -- not in some neighborhood with no one for neighbors but married couples and their kids.

Cabo-
re: "What is your point?"

Aside from the fact that you can't string a sentence together and if I were merely going by your written word I would guess you were one of the immigrants you rail against?

Nothing.

AAAAAAAAWWWWWWWW you're still mad because I retired from a GREAT job.

My parents came here legally and we spoke only spanish in the house, still do. My parents NEVER took a dime of government money, NEVER, They worked hard in the fields and packing houses and never complained because it was bette than where they came from. That is why I am the way I am.

If they can do it, anybody can. This is the greatest country in the world and you can do/be anything you want to if you get an education and work hard.

I am the American dream.

Cabo-
Sorry. I got your life confused with why you want to see Palestinians die for being unfit for life.

Wow, that he wasn't sucked in by the Media?

It was a show, you moron! Most of it was so over Michael-Moored. One thing fed on the other. People were struggling, which, BTW, always happens in a major catastrophy, The media publicly blaimed Bush for not reacting fast enough. Hell, Gov Blanco was complaining about Bush right when she fucked up! The people starting blaiming FEMA, FEMA reacted with money. The money was stolen. People complained, the media blaimed Bush, Bush responded with more money, people got their money, most of it stolen by corrupt Louisiana politicians, people complained, Bush responded with more money, people complained, Bush responded with more money, people complained, Bush responded with more money, people complained, Bush responded with more money, people complained, Bush responded with more money, people complained, Bush responded with more money, people complained, Bush responded with more money...

CC, yes you have those things in Houston and the beaches aren't that great. The traffic can be horrible and the humidity is no joke, but you get used to both of them to an extent. Personally, I like it because there is so much to do here.

As for rent, it varies, obviously. If you got a 2 bedroom just outside the loop, which would put you 20 to 30 minutes from downtown, you could get about 900 sq. ft. for about $900-1000 a month. Closer in and you would pay $1200 and up. I live inside the loop (closer to downtown) and it's perfect for me. Everything you could ever need, as far as grocery's and even entertainment, are within 5 minutes drive.

There are over 6,000 restaurants, museums and fine arts, and the "country" is only an hour or so drive away. Oh, and jobs are plentiful and I don't mean just minimum wage stuff. There are many professional employment opportunities here.

did that answer for you? If not let me know, I'll be glad to help you with whatever I can.

Cabo-
It went something like this:

Someone please tell me what they contribute to this planet.

See you around.

Cabo-
Sorry. I got your life confused with why you want to see Palestinians die for being unfit for life.

If they took care of their own shit first and worried about Israel and killing all Jews second, they would be better off.

What I do not understand is why the people of Gaza do not rise up against their governement and protest for better infrastructure, better sewage, water supplies, food supplies, energy supplies, food supplies, education?

How can a weed smoker be such an asshole?

Ok, I said food twice, but food is important.

Cabo-
As you and 101 have concluded, it's a racial flaw, and they are only fit for target practice, LOL.

Nice try at deflection.

Cabo-
I seriously doubt that you and 101 are remiss in your understanding of the conflict, or are in any way ignorant of the facts or recent history of the situation. It's clear to each of you that the Palestinians, women and children included, are a waste of oxygen.

Isn't it hard to shoot women and children, no, you just don't lead them as much.

#27 | Posted by BetelG

Again, a nice try at deflection.

Cabo-
There is no "deflection".

As my Grandfather would say, "life is tough, life is expensive, you are owed nothing"

Cabo-
You stated that they were worthless stains on the planet and 101 stated that they were good for "target practice", which you thought was just the funniest thing. There is no "deflection" from me.

Ahhh, a Full Metal Jacket reference. I love it.

TY, I did find that funny myself.

I am the American dream.

So says the descendant of cowards who fled here.

Was that "VERY FUNNY", Cabo?

Later.

And your people came from?

EVERLONG

Just now read you #18. Thanks for taking the time to write to give me your info. Appreciated it.

yw. Hope it helped some.

My people come from everywhere, Cabo, and I don't much like ethnic jokes about them only being good for "target practice".

Good day.

Cowards from "everywhere"?

Did you forget to put on your estrogen patch princess?

My people come from everywhere, Cabo, and I don't much like ethnic jokes

Look at me, look at me, I am less racist than you... How fucking pathetic.

I can't be a racist, I am a protected minority. Your beloved government says so.

Sad story. Basically people are stupid. Authorities should be able to arrest and remove anyone acting like this.

Like?

Does anyone knows what ever happened to those 500 plus buses that were allowed to be drowned by the Mayor of New Orleans because he did not have enough drivers to drive them out? Have they become moving cafeterias? Maybe, emergency shelters? Maybe they have been rehabilitated? Were they junked, and sold for parts? Placed in playgrounds? Sold to overseas auto dealers? I know this blog is about Ike, but Katrina is still in the news here and there. If these vehicles are still around, maybe they should be painted red and sent to California, which I keep hearing is broke and in debt.

Cabo's just pissed cause he can't get any good caddying jobs anymore.

"She gave her life to God. I know she's in the right place."
Umm, Mom-she gave her life to the bugs and I don't think that woodlot is the "right" place for anything smarter than a stump.

As for her plaintive "pray for me", clearly God was busy deciding on fly balls that day. The Lord may move in mysterious ways, but a wall of water goes pretty much whichever way it wants. Too bad she didn't learn that in Sunday School.

"Life is tough, life is expensive, you are owed nothing."

One of the main goals of my adult life has been to have the same attitude in life as CABO VATO's grandfather. The immigrants to this country are all like that no matter where they come from, Mexico, Korea, Pakistan, Eastern Europe, Central America, Philippines, Vietmam, Cuba, etc. These first generation immigrants are tough, work hard, family oriented and don't expect anything from America except a chance at the Amerocam dream.

Libs who are born here are just the opposite: fat, lazy, pussified, and expecting the government to do everything for them.

Cabo's just pissed cause he can't get any good caddying jobs anymore

I love how you libs talk trash about us Mexican-Ameicans.

No fuck that, I am an AMERICAN..........

I am the American dream.

I feel sorry for northguy. Fucking loser..... BTW.. I want fries with that boy.

Ah si, Cabron_Vato. Esta es muy gordo, no?

"I want fries with that boy."

Kinky, maricon.

"If they can do it, anybody can. This is the greatest country in the world and you can do/be anything you want to if you get an education and work hard.

I am the American dream."

That is AWESOME! Every jerk who cheats slaps your Mom & Dad in the face. These are the types of people who build a better nation. I am happy for you & you seem to have been truly blessed in your family.

If they took care of their own shit first and worried about Israel and killing all Jews second, they would be better off.

He's got a point.....

I would imagine that anyone who stayed regardless of where they lived remembers all of the warnings from rita which turned out to be not much in that area............I have been to bolivar countless times and I can tell....even I would have gotten my ass out of there and I move for almost nothing........

and also...its texas and its called texas swagger......independent and not willing to let the government tell us what to do and how to live.......

but again.....its also BOLIVER LADY.,......heres to wishing she had gotten out.....

I would imagine that anyone who stayed regardless of where they lived remembers all of the warnings from rita which turned out to be not much in that area....#60 | Posted by bushlovertwo

True. Did you hear about those idiots who decided to spend the night on one of the Galveston piers? They were picked up by the Coast Guard during the eye of the storm, hanging onto a few pieces of the pier that were left. Their reason for doing so? "We did it during Rita and nothing happened then, so we thought it be fun this time." Idiots. Bolivar was a little more understandable though since the roads were blocked and the ferry stopped well before the hurricane hit (I believe that by 24 hours before the storm, the storm surge had already risen 4 feet).

#13 | Posted by CalifChris

To add to everlong's post, you also get used to the humidity fairly quickly. I lived in SoCal for 2 years, then moved back to Houston. While it sucked for a few days, I was pretty much used to it after a week or so. The traffic was about the same. Just make sure your apartment and car have a good a/c and you'll do fine.

Is anyone else impressed that you can send text messages in the middle of a Hurricane? That's pretty reliable cell phone service.

This person was a moron. For the funeral, the corpse should be wearing a dunce cap.
