President-elect Barack Obama pressured Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to seat Roland Burris, hoping to remove a politically consuming distraction as he works to address the economic crisis, a senior Democratic official said Wednesday. Obama told Reid and others when he visited Capitol Hill this week "that if Burris had legal standing -- and it appears he has -- he should be seated as quickly as possible," the aide said.

I suppose this is what we have to look forward to - the Democrats in Congress are already caving to Obama's demands.

The Senate Dems ran a bad bluff and Burris called them. Obama advised them to fold.

As the leader of the Dems, he has every right to point out their best options.

They had no constitutional grounds to prevent him from the appointment.

You know, that "goddamned piece of paper".

Nobody is pleased with it.

The law is the law.

I asked earlier in the week if anybody, lefty or righty had any better ideas and absolutely nobody offered any viable alternative.

But dont let that keep you from cryin like a Whiney Ass Titty Baby Joe, et. al.

It is about time someone could make Harry Reid make some intelligent choices. This distraction needs to end and Reid fumbled the whole thing from the very beginning.

Reid caving in to demands? Weird. He hasn't done that in days!

lol

Reid and Pelosi should be voted out. But you know they run the caucus and the word is Don't Rock The Boat. The Blue Dogs constitute the only deterrent to their splineless meanderings and yet they fail to stand up and take charge.

Burris was going to be seated because he has political capital and the appointment so why be stupid about it. Why make it public?

Because Harry Reid is like one of those yappity yap ankle bitters that women buy at the pet store [with papers because Princess Missy Michele is a Royal Bitch and don't forget it] and all he needs is a bow in his hair to look like one.

oza, I agree with you but it won't happen.

In political terms, Reid rolled up his sleeves, put on his favorite "Kiss the Chef" apron, got his fingers dusty with flour and baked himself a big humble pie. He scarfed it down in front of reporters Wednesday, without a fork, all but licking his fingers, that pie was so sweet and tasty. Mmm-mmm.

Have a special election and let the people of Illinois decide.

Much better than accepting the appointment of a governor arrested for federal corrupt charges including attempting to sell said Senate seat.

Those pesky dems, they talk all tough until confronted..........

I thought Durbin had already provided a solution.

Again everyone is dumping on Reid. (mostly cause he is an idiot) No one wants to remember Obama was the big dog leading the race of don't seat Burris. Now he back deals Reid into folding. Stand up, and admit he is folding, instead of hiding behind Reid's skirt. But that would be change that people are hoping for.

hope, hop, whatever

Profiles in Cowardice:

"No appointment by this governor under these circumstances could produce a credible replacement."
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) calling for a special election to fill President-elect Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat, Dec. 9, 2008

"We write to insist that you step down as governor of Illinois and under no circumstance make an appointment to fill the vacant Illinois Senate seat."
Letter from the 50 members of the Senate Democratic Caucus to Gov. Rod Blagojevich, Dec. 10, 2008

"Anyone appointed by Gov. Blagojevich cannot be an effective representative of the people of Illinois and, as we have said, will not be seated by the Democratic Caucus."
U.S. Sens. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Durbin, Dec. 30, 2008

Hey, listen, David, I'm an old trial lawyer. There's always room to negotiate."
Reid on "Meet the Press," Jan. 4, 2009

Durbin said in a statement Jan. 7 that he hopes Burris' situation can be resolved "in a fair and timely manner."

Blago is an idiot. He said his efforts to improve healthcare and lower property taxes are related to his impeachment.

I didn't vote for B.O., but good for him to pressure Reid. Reid and Pelosi should get tossed for the good of the country (although if they didn't, so much the better for Republicans).

Him pressuring Reid is what it is. Not being transparant and admiting that it was his preasure is the problem. I hope for the change, I hope he will do what he says.

free, you can hope in one hand and have someone crap in the other. Which one will be full first. He is a politician, he will never do what he says.

First all of the Dems would not accept any appointment from Blago--including Obama who said Blago should resign.

Then they were all for having a special election--even Blago was open to this while the investigation was going forward. But the Dems were afraid of losing the seat to a Republican.

Then the Dems realize they have no constitutional standing to deny the appointment of Burris.

And now the impeachment is distracting from the one's coronation in 11 days.

BO wants all this to go away and it just won't!

Schadenfreude becomes you so.

Murphy-
re: And now the impeachment is distracting from the one's coronation in 11 days.

Bush was coronated by the Supreme Court in 2000. Obama was elected by a margin of 8,000,000 votes.

BTW, it's "that one" to you.

That is plain funny! Wrong, but funny.

Obama told Reid and others when he visited Capitol Hill this week "that if Burris had legal standing -- and it appears he has -- he should be seated as quickly as possible,"

OH MY GOD....SUCH SCATHING WORDS!!

HOW SCANDALOUS!!

I think the point is that the Senate Democrats had a lot better reason to be concerned with the Burris appointment - the fact that they would have to work with a tainted appointee- than Obama, who only cared about this because he wanted to have a clean inauguration.

But Reid, Durbin and the rest of the Democrats folded anyways. And it is indicative of the lack of balls they will have for the next 4 years whenever Obama tells them to jump.

Nice to see the Chicago cronyism has now been successfully exported to Washington.

Of course, it's still preferable to those despicable Texans running things. After all, the Chicago political machinery is all Dem.

I can't believe barry has taken both sides of this issue. I thought he was the straight shootin man but he talks out of both sides of his mouth at the same time.

So NOW he was involved, but he wasn't involved before this? Sounds very unlikely doesn't it?

If you believe that I have a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn! No wait, isn't bloomberg trying to sell that to Congress?

Blago should have appointed himself. the dems.need someone in the senate with a pair of balls and he wouldn't have to bullshit us about doing the peoples work because everyone knows he's a crook,so he might try to redeem himself by actually doing the peoples work.

Well, I am pleased to see the Senate has its token. No surprise about Dumbo's feelings, any one who has ever been around black people knows that they stick together. (Just observe how they vote as a block.)

Betleg,

"Bush was coronated by the Supreme Court in 2000. Obama was elected by a margin of 8,000,000 votes."

It is amazing to me how you can make a compound statement and be wrong at both ends. Bush won the election in Florida and was elected by 5 Electors votes. Dumbo was elected by 192 electoral votes. I really wish he would have had 8 million more. If I could have limited them to California and New York, and replaced them in some other states we would at least have competent leadership for the next four years instead of what we will get.

The founders were size not to allow the general public to vote for president...one only need to look at these results to see why.

So Obama is a Sleazy-Slimy,Corporate Owned,Cocksucking Whore? So what else is new in Washington? Get over it!!!

That one is from Mccain's joke at the DC dinner.

It was funny then--funny now too.

No ant, he is the savior. Just wait until the 20th and see.

Nothing surprizes me anymore when it come to politics. Everyone elected into office should have a huge "L" imprinted on their forehead.

this guy should never have been seated..

harry reid said that just on sunday...or you telling me that he changed his mind....oh no...

and this guy is a real work anyway..anyone else seen the stories about the mausalem he has built for himslef
big letters on top says..."trailblazer"......

wierd
