Viacom said Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and 16 other channels will go dark for Time Warner Cable's 13 million subscribers at 12:01 a.m. Thursday if a new carriage fee deal is not agreed upon by then. The nation's second-largest cable operator serves customers in New York, the Carolinas, Ohio, Southern California and Texas.

Boo hoo, those channels suck anyway. If I were a Time Warner subscriber I'd say let them go.

Time Warner sucks as it is. Get a dish and pocket the difference.

I actually like Time Warner (compared to Cablevision to be sure) and I can't get a dish because I live in an apartment buiilding.

The only channel i'd miss is Comedy Central.

They'll work it out.

We are heading into a depression and these guys want big increases in fees????
I won't be surprised if several of the big cable channels go belly up when more and more consumers are forced to drop cable or satellite.

As long as they keep Oxygen and Lifetime on the air, right?

I am a Time Warner subscriber... and Time Warner sucks anyway... But I really do not appreciate being thrown in the middle of their "war" as a customer... Especially when we didn't get any warning until last night via our parents cable 6 hours away... :/

Somehow I know I'll make it through 2009 without harboring thoughts of suicide if
I'm no longer able to watch Nickelodeon and MTV.

Sumner Redstone is cash strapped right now, so it's all about the money.

We will lose it even with a dish, it was all over our channels last night on the dish network.

It will be fun, I pay for a certain amount of channels and those 20 or so are part of the deal. Maybe people are going to get it a little cheaper, I know I certainly will.

TW sucks.

TV sucks.

Run for the shelters, that damn volcano is swarming again. The world as we know it will die if we can't get MTV.

The only reason I won a TV is because I won it in a reading contest.

won = own

Don't know about belly up, but hurting. I'm not the only person in my neighborhood with a newer big-ol' aerial for digital broadcast. With basic cable getting to be $60 and more (after taxes and fees, here), while it's still filled with ads? For as much TV as I watch, broadcast and internet will do (plus supporting my PBS stations).

But, I got to use the cable company's RG6 runs to distribute my antenna TV around the house. Thanks, guys.

I have verizon Fios, the service department is terrible.

Love my Direct TV (especially after living out in Boot Key Harbor for 11+ years with no TV).

How was Boot Key Harbor?

The power of the purse!

"Just say no" to corporate greed.

Aaah. Nickelodeon. Is anyone else old enough to remember when that channel wasn't just insulting to the intellect of it's viewers?

It's almost like they called Disney Channel and said, "Hey, you guys make the cute/funny sitcom and variety shows for children. Dora? You're damned right we wanna put all our power behind something aimed at, apparently, 2 year olds. We've got stoners now thanks to Spongebob, and we don't want any of that stuff which requires a developing mind to actually pay attention. You stupid dinosaurs."

Even NOGGIN is somehow stupid, and that channel is supposed to have the good stuff. Square One? Mr. Wizard? The Electric Company? Where did all the INTELLIGENT shows for children go? I mean I'd rather kids watch Clone Wars then Spongebob. At least trying to follow the plotline there will be more challenging then the millionth time Spongebob sucks up extra water because he's a sponge.... even though they're already entirely underwater anyway. That's FUNNY, GET IT? *bong hit*

..although in Nick's defense, they do carry Avatar, and that show's not totally insulting to children.

And the follow-up headline!

13 Million Cable Viewers May Gain IQ Points

What's with all the "stupids" in Spongebob.....my 4 year old loves it, but what about common decency...do these liberal writers think they are being edgy??? please..am i the only one who feels this way....

My kids will miss Nick I'll miss Comedy Central and in reality neither of us will miss either mutch. I am bit pissed about the short notice and I will expect a rate cut if they cut my selection. I won't get it but I will still expect it.

DOC SARVIS - I loved it. After retiring from the Air Force in 89 and being divorced in 90 I decided to take my sailboat (78 Irwin Citation 34'), run away from Annapolis MD and 'as I say "ran aground" in the Florida Keys. Dropped anchor in Boor Key Harbor [it was a free harbor at that time] and decided to stay a few weeks. Well, almost 12 years later I left there with a new wife and to this day, Marathon in the keys is are vacation destination.

If you think it's that bad, why don't you grow a pair and stop them from watching it?

The only reason I won a TV is because I won it in a reading contest.

Lucky for you that it wasn't a PROOFreading contest.

If you think about it, Viacom should be giving away their channels, just so they can charge advertisers for our "eyebaells"......so they have us watching their commercials.

If the cable channels over rides viacom's commercials, and inserts their own advertising, then viacom deserves to be able to charge the cable companies for the content.

As for mtv, only a pre teen would care about losing it!

Facing a backlash from TV viewers furious at the prospect of losing "SpongeBob SquarePants" and "Dora the Explorer," two media giants reached a new programming agreement that keeps those popular cartoon characters on the channels of the country's second-largest cable operator.

Viacom Inc. had threatened to pull 19 of its cable channels, including Nickelodeon, MTV, VH-1 and Comedy Central, from the Time Warner Cable Inc. systems at midnight Wednesday when their previous two-year contract expired.

At midnight in New York, minutes into the new year, Viacom granted an extension that allowed the two sides to keep talking. They then clinched a deal. The New Year's Day accord avoided a blackout of Viacom's programming in 13.3 million homes in the U.S. served by Time Warner Cable Inc., including nearly 2 million in the Los Angeles area.

Wow Verm! Good to see you and your lady-boy "date" made it out of the nightclub fire!

Just as long as Time Warner still carries G4.

The prospect of not being able to turn on the 'ol flat screen every day just to leer at Olivia Munn and Morgan Webb and think naughty thoughts is unacceptable.

Archbishop Sean P. O'Malley called on young people to resist influences such as television that threaten to ``brainwash'' them and said society would be well-served if Catholic politicians and other leaders were to live according to the teachings of their faith.

TV is a ``glass idol'' that has too prominent a role in most people's lives, O'Malley told 1,300 Catholic teens assembled at Merrimack College in North Andover.

``We are becoming more and more alone,'' he said. ``The great spiritual sicknesses of our age and our culture come in great part from the extreme individualism and materialism of our age. Television is the pulpit of those influences.''

``MTV packages it in a very attractive way for our young people,'' he told the boisterous crowd. ``But it's poisonous . . . be aware that there are people out there who want to brainwash you. Don't let yourself be brainwashed.''

lol

I don't respect the catholic church much, but the aforementioned message is good.
