Venezuela will seize several gold mining concessions that previous governments granted private operators, in a bid to supplement falling oil prices with proceeds from state-controlled gold, President Hugo Chavez said Saturday. "We are taking back some concessions that former governments have given, and whose permits are still held by some rich people," in order to reduce public reliance on oil, Chavez said.

Chavez has never seen an industry he doesn't want to nationalize.

Just like our leaders.

Sarah Palin's fault!

I I were a mine owner and couldn't stop this, I would blow the entire length of the tunnels and make the bastard have to spend to get to the gold!

'If I' were...

When is someone going to shoot this sucker?

Is that what you recommend?

damn ... I was considering getting a triple bypass down there

if his country needs more revenue why not just raise taxes on their rich??

Where'd you get your cut-n-pasted list of bullshit?

This will end badly...for Chavez...for Venezuela...for innocent men, women and children.

Dick-tators who violate private property rights will eventually violate human rights, peoples' rights of conscience...

This tubby little spic motherfucker long ago needed to have exited this earth while gargling a piece of his medulla---wondering what just happened.

I hope the CIA is working on it.

Foe the Venezuelean peoples' sake.

our gov't does the same thing but they do it to the poor.

try not paying your property tax. they take it.

the gold mine owners weren't giving up a fat enough slice. they took it.

but venezuela spends it on "social development" whereas our rotating dictatorship spends it on the war industry.

I hope the CIA is working on it.

Foe the Venezuelean peoples' sake.

Yeah, because the CIA is such a helpful organization.

Yeah, because the CIA is such a helpful organization.

If its not now, it can sure go along ways towards remediating itself if it offs that piece of shit.

Pinche up late losing a debate again I see.

Anyone foolish enough to do business with or in Venezuela should know better.

The Canadian firm mentioned has recourse: they can go to the Canadian courts, and demand seizure of a like amount of Venezuelan capital in Canada. Gas stations, oil tankers--they should do so immediately. It's called "leveling the playing field", and there's no reason why Venezuela should have a single penny in Canada that isn't up for grabs, right now.

Chavez is trying to make up for oil revenue that has fallen 75% in the last 5 months. He also will be pumping oil at full tilt as all Oil Exporting Countries will be tempted to do despite what OPEC publicly states. Ergo, don't expect the price of oil/gasoline to go up soon. Ergo, EXPECT a worldwide DEPRESSION as every nation looks after their self interest at the expense of every other country.

So betelg, attack the messenger not the message? Usual response!

When Chavez came to the UN and visited local Ivy League colleges, he was celebrated by many of the hard core left. When he nationalized banks, then oil companies, the same gang cheered in unison. when he unveiled his 21st Century socialism, the same gang had a wet dream.

So take money from evil corporations, Bravo!!! Like arrianna says, the end of laissez faire capitalism.

Throwing out your property rights, right to free speech, and voting rights along the way? Don't worry about it!

Throwing out your property rights, right to free speech, and voting rights along the way? Don't worry about it!

Crap, what an imbecile, our property rights went out the door about 2 years ago with the supreme court ruling the government could take our property and sell it to corporations to get more tax money.

Get a damn clue dude, and that was republicans.

In the face of falling revenues, Chavez tries to help his people, breaking contracts in the process. Well intentioned, but misguided Socialism, you might say.

Shrub, Cheney and Paulson really just fuck everyone, in a very public way, while no private citizen, public service group or Congress do or say anything to stop it. Socialism of the most hypocritical, corrupt, and ineffective sort. All the money these thieves have commandeered have done zip for the economy. When these crooks say it will "take time" they mean, its gonna be Obama's fucking problem, Scionara suckers. BushI laundered $250 billion through BCCI's collapsed bank, sharing it with Saddam Hussein, post GulfI. Shrub finally outdid his pappa. It isn't even going to matter that he coudln't kill Social Security since there isn't anythin left of the Treasury to make payments with. Not bad for an indifferent, draft dodging recovering alchoholic moron. What fun, every day a joy, dead bodies and all, now maybe Jeb can have a turn.

Banks don't take lose of money value, as inflation goes up the banks will either be given more money or the inflation rate will rise.

Banks always get their true value of the dollar.

"In the face of falling revenues, Chavez tries to help his people,..."

Is he REALLY trying to help his people or is he consilidating his power? C'mon, NutJob, think real hard now.....

"Shrub, Cheney and Paulson really just fuck everyone,..."

If you work on it really, really hard, you might soon be able to post something without getting into the "Bush/Cheney" thing. This IS, after all, a thread about Chavez, you know.

Wow, I bet Chavez's people are going to feel the real economic crunch like Americans........NOT!

"EXPECT a worldwide DEPRESSION as every nation looks after their self interest at the expense of every other country."

Already there. The government bailouts (not just the US Government) will/can only last so long. The Christmas buying frenzy (such as it was) is over. 2009 will be soon upon us. I see nothing in the near-term that will save the economies of the industrialized world. Unemployment will continue to rise. Consumers will be far less frivolous with their money, preferring/needing to expend it more on the necessities such as food, fuel, and utilities. Without continued consumer spending in those areas not considered everyday necessities, manufacturing and sales will continue to fall, thus adding to more unemployment, which creates more consumers unable to purchase, which adds to less consumer spending which... you get my point.

To bring it back around on topic, the US cannot afford to piss off Venezuela as the US continues to purchase somewhere around 20% of its imported oil from Venezuela. With those idiot Hamas boys shooting off dumb rockets into Israel, the Israelis responding with the typical overly heavy response, the surrounding Arab nations just getting into yet another lather over the Israeli response, the US link to ME oil becomes more tenuous. Already there has been a 6.5 percent spike (as reported this morning) in oil prices, yet neither Israel or Gaza has a damn thing to do with oil.

This is the Thread where the Wignuttery Brigade comes out issuing directives/threats to other country/leaders ---- but as usual in total oblivion to the irony that for 12 years they couldn't get a single thing done right.

They are like the alcoholic, wife beating, and deadbeat dad neighbor that goes around the neighborhood telling people how everyone else is running their household wrong!

The truth is bull shit?

Is it possible that these concessions were given to these companies but corrupt puppet governments and Venezuela is merely taking back what is there's?

Funny the same guys that want to tear up the UAW contracts are rushing in to defend the gold contracts.

But it's not funny is it?

Most analysts realized early on in his career that Chavez would try to become a dictator. Very much a tradition in South America. The questions always are, by how much will the damage outway the beneficial; how much of the beneficial will last beyond his rule; how long will his rule last; and can/will it continue after his exit.

I don't see him posing any danger to us. He needs us as customers for his product, among other things. And he doesn't have very much support in South America. Support from Russia or China or Cuba is symbolic, at best.

"Funny the same guys that want to tear up the UAW contracts are rushing in to defend the gold contracts."

funny...I don't believe these gold mining companies were asking for a bailout to save their companies (& UAW jobs). I don't believe the oil companies he nationalized were asking him for a bailout either.

with plumeting oil prices, how else is Chavez to enrish himself? how else is he to purchase those high tech weapon systems from Russia? gotta find another revenue stream.

Chavez is just 'spreading the wealth'

er, *enrich*. it's what I get for commenting from my cell.

And Red reveals a lot about himself, his childhood and why he's so hateful and angry.

normally I would attack this asswipe about socialist and all that but if you think about the last few months around here economically........
is this just foreshadowing of what we are going to be doing

the government is about to run the car makers pretty soon arent they????

and it is STILL interesting to see how the left in this country thinks of this guy as a hero of any sort>........says a lot about them....

yes, but.... will he smell any sulfer in the mine?

Run one industry into the ground, seize another

When they hang Hugo Chavez from a lamp post, let's hope they round up some of his buddies like Danny Glover and Sean Penn.

I think the best thing is to publicly ignore him while making vague platitudes about the democratically elected leadership of the country, and privately cut off any of his investments every time he nationalizes something. That way we are seen as honoring the will of the people that elected him (and many of them are getting tired of him) while not giving him any ammo to stay in power. These guys thrive on fear. Without an enemy to keep the peoples' attention focused, they tend to fall by the wayside.

(And yes, the left wing nuts will compare that last statement to Bush.)

This element is kind of important with all the wall street crap going on.

A universal element anyhow.

Notice how the right wingers standard answer is 'kill, kill, kill'.

Great Christian folks.

When Mr. Softies get into power it would not surprise me a bit if their highly admired Hugo Chavez is allowed to enter into Fort Knox in Kentucky and get his hands on all the delicious loot there. And I am not refering to ice cream. Chavez and Mr. Softies will could make the movie Goldfinger a reality. And this time there will be no Pussy Galore to help us out.
