Obama will be taking the oath on the Bible used by the great emancipator, and he's the first African-American president. Both men are from Illinois. And both faced some controversy over their limited time in elected office. Lincoln served only a single term in the House of Representatives and was very much an unknown. I don't believe for a second Obama thinks he is a new Lincoln. I do think using this bible is a great choice and fitting.

I thought he would want to use his own bible. how else will someone a hundred years from now type '...first time it has been used for that purpose since 2009' (or 2013 if re-elected)? surely President Lincoln's bible normally resides in some museum. prehaps an inscription is nearby stating its history. now will that be amended? this seems a pretty arrogant to me.

President Lincoln may not have been 'Lincoln' when inaugurated, but I doubt he used President Washington's bible to mark the occasion.

Postscript: Welcome to the Drudge.

The bible resides in the Library of Congress and not in just some museum. Actually it wasn't Lincoln's personal bible. It was presented to him by a Supreme Court Justice like in the case with many Presidential swearing ins. I think the history of it will be amended showing that our country has indeed come a long way.

For the record, I think it is only fitting for him (Obama) to be sworn in on the same Bible that Lincoln was. It is a tribute to what Lincoln did. I've been banned from the site over a hundred times, most for contributing to the articles on evolution. I started off trying to correct the site, but eventually decided after being banned the first few dozen times that it was indeed some sort of hoax and tried to play along with it, working quite hard to stay true to social conservatism while subtly revealing all of its absurdities. I still kept getting banned. Now I'm back to thinking these are genuine lunatics.

I wonder if this is a sign that Obama is going to seek to do what is necessary to keep the government machine together even if he does not necessarily think or desire that it be done.

You all have to remember Lincoln was not the ready and eager liberator, but the liberator of conveneience and necessity. It's in the history books, but they don't teach that in school.

I am not saying that is what is taking place or will, I don't know what Barack Obama will do, it will be no worse than what John McCain would have done, but I would rather see someone else there.

Hopefully Obama, unlike Bush, will share that quality with Lincoln, i.e. the ability to fire people who aren't doing a good job....as in Rumsfeld....he should have dumped him before the invasion when he arrogantly overruled the generals who said we needed more troops in Iraq. Bush was unable to recognize failure and it cost lives, billions of dollars and probably several extra years of occupying that country. Lincoln on the other hand, did fire people and replace them until he found some who could get the job done. I hope Obama does the same thing.
