A Saudi court has rejected a plea to divorce an eight-year-old girl married off by her father to a man who is 58, saying the case should wait until the girl reaches puberty. The divorce plea was filed in August by the girl's divorced mother with a court at Unayzah, 135 miles north of Riyadh just after the marriage contract was signed by the father and the groom. "She doesn't know yet that she has been married," said her mother's lawyer, Abdullar Jtili said.

I'm with you guys in condemning this bullshittery, but I think it is important to realize that Islam has little to do with this- don't use a cultural practice as an excuse to beat up on a religion. Islam can be used as rationalzation, but then again any religion is full of wierd shit that can be twisted to support just about anything. I can dig up all sorts of juicy fun from Leviticus or Revelation. This is a culture we are dealing with here, one that has coevolved with religion even before the dawn of Islam. Religions are fairly inoccuous until they get blended with culture and politics into something destructive. Religion is fertilizer. Culture is nails. Politics is diesel fuel. You get the idea.

Arranged marriage as a political/economic practice is a cultural practice in the region that dates back thousands of years. It is as relavent to the most basic tenets of Islam in about the same way as the Easter Bunny is central to Christianity. That being said, in order to keep the tradition alive, people have had to present it in religious terms. No one objects, because then they get flogged, decapitated, or sent to hell. We tolerate these religious wackjobs since they keep our fuel tanks full.

All rights come from the government---end of story. This girls government says she has the right to stay married until puberty. If there is another government that can override that decision--so be it--but until then her rights are what ever the ruling government says they are. Rights are given by the government---whether you EARN them or not is meaningless.
