China has blocked access to the New York Times' web site, days after the central government defended its right to censor online content it deems illegal.

And this surprises people?

We should block access to the NYT too. It's just a propaganda fish wrap.

Maybe rename it the New York Times Enquirer. The Enquirer is more accurate though.

Its all Bush's fault.

they renigged on their Olympic promises as well, revoking everyone's visas they didn't like immediately prior to the games. too late to negotiate.

we do the same if it involves Cuba or the people we buy oil from in Venezuela.

It's called the Fairness Doctrine morons.

The CIA should work to set up more proxy servers and hacks for getting around the "Great Firewall". Freedom of information exchange should be guranteed in today's age. I have yet to meet a mean-spirited Chinese person, but to hell with the Chinese government.

I despise Rush Limbaugh and everything he stands for, but I agree- the "Fairness Doctrine" amounts to an unconstitutional restriction of free speech. In America, people should have the right to make asses of themselves.

"...the "Fairness Doctrine" amounts to an unconstitutional restriction of free speech."

No, it doesn't. That's exactly what Limbaugh wants you to believe.

The FD says that if a broadcaster uses the publically-owned airwaves (AM/FM/VHF/UHF bands) they are obligated to give equal time to opposing views of opinions and editorials they've aired.

Zombiehunter, .... 'the right to make asses of themselves' and millions into their bank accounts.

Good to see you're finally admitting that you think like the Chi-Com government.

I bet they pump FAUX News into all the homes over there.

Maybe rename it the New York Times Enquirer. The Enquirer is more accurate though.

You mean like the News Corp owned rag called the NY Post?

I don't remember seeing a 'Page 6' in the NYT.

You neo-cons sure do like a lot of pictures in your reading material.

Nothing bad happens when there is free and unfettered exchange of information. Kooks inevitably come out of the woodwork, but people are free to arrive at their own conclusions and morons eventually reveal themselves to be morons. Look at the internet.

I find demagogues to be distasteful and destructive to society, but we should not risk forsaking our principles of freedom of speech in order to deal with this problem. We would replace one source of injustice with another. Perhaps I misunderstand the FD. Is it intended to prevent viewpoint discrimination by broadcasting companies on AM/FM/UHF/VHF bands? If so, there is nothing controversial about that. If a broadcasting company is going to air political commentary and editorial over public frequencies, it should not be allowed to discriminate between customers who want to purchase airtime based on their viewpoint.

I don't understand this issue of equal time- it just seems a little contrived. I can think of a variety of distinct "opposing" viewpoints to Rush, many of which would oppose one another. Should each receive equal time? And whatever happened to Air America? Why has conservative talk radio thrived while its liberal counterpart hasn't?

How about this solution- stations that present political commentary and opinion should be prohibited from broadcasting news and vice versa. When they identify their station every 30 minutes or whatever, they should have to also make a disclaimer that they are presenting opinion, not fact.

China should be commended. At least, they only censored the N.Y.T. Now, had they "ordered" that the newspaper be only used as toilet paper in their billions of latrines, that really would have been a punishment. Specially, if the order had demanded that the first swipe be made with the editorial page. Come to think of it, in the United States, instead of an order, it could be made a custom, hence it would be protected speech within our constitution. Unfortunately we do not have billions of latrines in our country, and unfortunately, that newspaper does not publish photos of its editors in their editorial pages.

Yes, let's be all about hearing only one side of every issue. That's the Reich-Wing way.

US man, who made adopted son die terrible death in hot car, found not guilty

Miles Harrison fell down on his knees and wept when the judge found him not guilty of involuntary manslaughter of his 21-month-old son, whom Harrison adopted in Russia. The man left the little boy in his sweltering SUV for nine hours in July. The boy, whom the Harrisons named as Chase, died of thermal shock. "We do not understand the gentleness, which the judge showed to the man, who had left the little boy locked up in his car to die a terrible death in sweltering summer heat," Russian embassy officials said

.......Bush is kissing their Commie ass as fast as he can........

........he's only human........

I just read that China has suffered it's coldest day in 57 years. No wonder they do not have much love or use for the N.Y.T. Said newspaper has in the past, defended the global warming doctrine. Al Gore would definitely not be a good candidate for Ambassador to China. I believe Beijing is too hot for him right now. If he likes wonton or eggdrop soups, Chinatown in San Francisco or New York would be a better place at this time.
