Thomas L. Friedman: China is not going to rescue us or the world economy. We're going to have to get out of this crisis the old-fashioned way: by digging inside ourselves and getting back to basics -- improving U.S. productivity, saving more, studying harder and inventing more stuff to export.

Who ever said they were going to??????

I chose not to register, so I did not read the article. But, that does not stop me from having an opinion...

Why would we want China to rescue us? In my mind China is part of the problem, not the answer.

I would also agree that we need to be more productive and inventive, but I believe that something has to be done so that we do more manufacturing.

Manufacturing is a big way that we create value. Repackaging and selling mortgages does not create value.

To me that is the way out of this, let's figure out a way to manufacture more things. Whether they are exported or consumed here in the US.

I bet you can pick up some factories and warehouse cheap in the forclosure auctions. So invent the equipment you need to make your invention and get going.

Too bad thats not all it takes to start a business anymore.

The Federal Government is spending money that it doesn't have. That is what caused the problem. It's every man for himself as the ship sinks. Buy a few more automatic weapons and double your ammo supply.

Thx Friedman for speaking the worldly truth.

With God's help, America will recover --- one source would be the 'new' energy about to be unleashed (and leave fossil fuel in less demand, diminishing Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Russia, etc).

Don't expect Wall Street or our elected officials to act in the bestr interests of our country either. They used to administer policies which controlled the international flow of capital, production and employment. But they discarded those policies 40 years ago.

I better get a gun before FWthom and shoot the motherfucker.

Some people never learn.

The only reason China is in a position to help us is because we gave China our Golden Goose. You think China wants to go back to where we are headed?

Fuck the new york times.

Fuck them and their registration system.

.... got dem ol' bubble blues ....

I completely agree with Takitez.

Whether we want them to is a reasonable question, but the fact is that they've been propping up the U.S. dollar for a few years now by buying up U.S. bonds. www.china.org.cn www.eeo.com.cn

Communist China WILL prop us up to a point.

They are loaning us the money to buy their shoddy crap.

If we go down, so do they.

Besides, they're profiting twice at our expense.

Why should God help America? America has screwed itself through monstrous greed, rampant corruption, and extreme hedonism. God helping America would be like helping the burglar rob your own house.

I cannot think of a single reason why God would favor America over other parts of the world far more in need of Grace and Hope, let alone clean water and a decent meal once in a while.

If God is in the helping business, then God obviously doesn't give a god-damn about Africa.

No, no, Takeitez. I believe in Free Will. We may have been given guidelines by which to lead our lives. But we have also been given the ability to either screw ourselves or save ourselves. We have chosen the former. We shall reap the whirlwind of our own making.

The credit crunch will ensure that China becomes the world's largest economy within a decade, up to 11 years earlier than previously expected, it is forecast today.
