Four thousand American troops "had to die" in Iraq, even if the United States knew Iraq didn't have weapons of mass destruction, former Assistant Secretary of Defense Frank Gaffney said. "We thought [Saddam Hussein] constituted a mortal threat," he said. "The danger was that inaction could have resulted in the death of many more Americans than 4,000."

"4,000 Americans 'had to die'"

Well, I've gone through a couple of lists that set forth the names of the Americans who died after being fed into the meatgrinder Cheney helped rig up and that Gaffney sounds he woulnd't mind giving a few turns of the crank and...well, it's just the damndest thing...there isn't a single "Cheney" or "Gaffney" listed on the butcher's bill.

Speaking of "having to die".....

Well at least we can rely on them to tell the truth after it's too late to matter.

Fucking sick. Does he mean the chemical weapons he used as we looked the other way (and I think, provided, correct me if wrong)? There was never one peep from us about them, as he was just "quelling the insurgents." That was the only immediate threat Saddam could have provided, and he knew better. It would have been suicide to attack us again, and he barely had resources to hold Iraq from splintering into multiple sub-states as it was. Even those things are nothing but a convenient half-ass excuse. Iraq was nothing but a money making venture for conservative bed-buddy corporations, and maybe a pathetic grab at oil that didn't work too well. We still have no better grasp on middle eastern oil, if that was the case.

Cheney and company need to be tried for the murder of every man woman and child dead in this war, american, or iraqi. As for our departure from our own moral and ethical codes regarding torture, habeus corpus and the executive power grab that burned the Bill of Rights and pissed on it's ashes, as well as all the questionable actions of non-military cambatants we have used? From Bush on down, they should be tried and, if found culpable, executed for war crimes, both as a message to future leaders that they are the ultimate servants of the law, not above it, and and as a message to foreign nations that we retain our integrity. Of course, it will never happen, but one can dream of an america that stands up for the rule of law over the priviledge of the reigning Oligarchy.

He had "other priorities" (TM Richard "Dick" Cheney).

They will all meet justice.

The death penalty clearly fits.
I am beggining to form a theory that they took impeachment off the table for one reason only: They know the criminal charges applied to a private citizen will carry far greater consequences than charges from congress upon a sitting president.

BULLSHIT!!!! Nancy Pelosi is a co-conspirator and will never go along with impeachment or criminal charges for a civilian in this matter.

I'll eat my hat if I'm wrong.

Uh, thanks to criminal George Bush, there is a statute that HE created that allows him to have ANYONE arrested, and he can give that authority to anyone in his cabinet.

Doesnt have to tell anyone about such a decision, as well.
Not to mention there are state statutes that can be brought, once he is no longer p. Or v.p., as the case might be.

cheney put his dick in the chopper on abc.
It aint over yet.

Even if the United States knew Iraq didn't have weapons of mass destruction, former Assistant Secretary of Defense Frank Gaffney said. "We thought [Saddam Hussein] constituted a mortal threat,"

If we knew (and we did) that he didn't have WMD's then how is he a "mortal" threat? Nothing like a statement that contradicts itself.

FRANK GAFFNEY NEEDS TO DIE

Couldn't really expect them to deal with the real threat to America-Pakistan and saudistan, could we?

These 4000 Americans "had to die" in about the same way as the 19 hijackers "had to fly". What about the tens of thousands of civilian deaths during the Iraq war? Neocons don't care about those. The Iraq war and WTC attacks were unjustifiable attacks that spilled the blood of innocents. Saddam Hussein was an evil man, and I loved seeing him hang, but Bush did not need to lie to the world. If he truly wanted to "liberate" the Iraqis, the war would have started with a clear plan on how to end it already in place.

This article has three problems.

The first problem is: MSNBC has an idea and takes a fact and regurgitates it into something that has no resemblance to the original fact. Then they find some screwball to make their point valid.

The second problem is: Raw Story (MSNBC in print form) takes it and regurgitates it into something that has no resemblance to the original pile of barf.

The third problem: Someone at DR read this and considered it factual news. Then it is spread to others here to enlighten their opinions and thus stir some hate so it can be spewed forth.

All for the entertainment value.

KBM. What? What? And What?

The guy said what he said.

WMD's didn't exist, and everyone knew it, though most were too chickenshit to admit it (not wanting to seem unpatriotic... whatever the fuck that means considering unpatriotic would've been the saving of American lives and beyond.)
The neo-cons are trying to save face any way they can, step one is to move the goal posts. Fuck them and fuck you for supporting a bankrupting war that has caused the needless deaths of many Americans -- all to based on a lie. If they were honest from the get go, the war either would have been avoided, or Americans would have agreed with the need to occupy Iraq WMD's or not. It's not hard to guess which way we would have gone if this administration had truly believed in the American ideal. Which they don't. Which makes them and their supporters anti-American. Merry Christmas.

It should be intuitively obvious to the most casual observor that Hussein was not a mortal threat to us. For one thing he was the primary obstacle to Middle East domination by Iran. THat's why we provided him with chemical weapon technology, prior to the first gulf War. So that he could gas the Iranians that outnumbered him 3:1. We knew it and provided for it then and now.

Israeli NeoCons see things differently. The enormous waste that has characterized Shrub's term in office is our foriegn policy based on what Israel thinks is their best interests, regardless the consequences to the United States or the validity of the warmongering opinions within Israel.

How can it be worth 4000 American lives and probably 1 million Iraqi lives when the outcome is so obviously unfavorable to Middle East peace, stability and prosperity? Not to mention the loss of US cash and credibility worldwide.

He had "other priorities" (TM Richard "Dick" Cheney).

Are you included in that bunch?

Killing thousands by a pointless war for profit should be a capital crime, maybe more serious than an oval office blow job, but someone of courage must institute proceedings.

Pelosi's only crime is neglecting to do that. Bad, but not THAT bad. And Lippy, if you profess a readiness to eat your chapeau, you better have an appetite for felt with Dijon mustard. herm

Nutcase, you know that by criticising either Israeli policy or America's unwavering support of Israel you are over halfway to being an anti-Semite. Do both, and you might as well tattoo a swastika to your ass in the eyes of some. Interestingly, these are either Republicans, Israeli hardliners, or members of AIPAC. Let them all burn in hell- none want peace. America has yet to invade any country that is really behind the terrorism Israel faces, and its policies don't do anything more than give the appearance of an effort to create lasting peace.

Afghanistan had to do with an attack on American soil, and Iraq was based on lies. We buy oil from gulf states, talk lots of pointless smack to Iran and Syria, and just ignore Lebanon and the Palestinians. None of this helps Israel achieve peace- it just maintains the status quo. American defense contracts rake in cash and arm the IDF to the teeth.

Nobody forces the issues of fundamentalism, poverty, Jerusalem, refugees, settlments, or tribal tensions- the issues that will demand real concessions on both sides and ultimately lead to peace.

Maybe he meant, because there was a Republican President they had to die due to the inevitability of failure?

God bless the neocons for keeping us safe from terrorism. Now will Barry and the libs surrender like they promised or will they grow a set and fight.

Neocon Thom

China and Russia Offer No Moral Threat?

Maybe its unimportant that Gaffney is a High Profile,Pro Israel Zionist, but meanwhile using the same logic of his statement (We thought [Saddam Hussein] constituted a mortal threat) then the US Military should immediately attack China and Russia!
Then too Gaffney's self serving semi-logic could be applied to serial murderers like Ted Bundy by saying well 23 women had to be raped and strangled because "otherwise" this could have resulted in the deaths of many more innocent women!"

"God bless the neocons for keeping us safe from terrorism."

Please describe your military service, Sniper.
or are you just a SNIPER in the sense that you'll just shoot (or blog at) anything that pleases your insipid little self?

Hans pwns thom FTW.

If the neocons had any enlightened perspective on the world, 9/11 probably wouldn't have happened.

stumble on newamericancentury.org and it's easy to see how they got it oh so wrong....

Jesus, God, and Dog love you.

Ah, the jerkwater bridgade wants American foreign policy initiatives to grind to a halt, and for America to become a passive victim on the world stage. Why? Ah, is this rebellion against authority figures and extension of contumacity from earlier years that was suppressed? Examine yourselves before you project negativity on to the actions of others.

There is a real world that does not operate in conformity with your model. Oh, you don't have a model but focus only on the "good" or "evil" of an individual undertaking because although most of you are declared atheists, you have a substituted religion. If you want to be an atheist, also be a skeptic instead of adopting a system with another name that you thoughtlessly make an object of worship.

Johnson:
Dissemble much? Maybe you're taking your cue from 101, who is also showing his dementia lately.

Basically, the neocons and their apologists have no shame and will never apologize for throwing away 4,000 of our best people. The average neocon would shoot an American GI in the face every day if it meant never having to admit being wrong.

Saddam was never a threat to us. In fact, given that he opposed radical Islam, he was quite useful to us. That is why much smarter administrations used him.
