See you at the pawty, Victoh.

One of best movie characters of all time is also the nom de blog of one of Spud's fave poster's here at DR.

Haven't seen him here fer a while, however.

From the Phillip K Dick Classic "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep"

Made into one of the best movies of all time.

"Blade Runner".

Roy Batty.

Tyrell: Would you... like to be upgraded?
Batty: I had in mind something a little more radical.
Tyrell: What... what seems to be the problem?
Batty: Death.
Tyrell: Death; ah, well that's a little out of my jurisdiction. You...
Batty: I want more life, fucker

Tyrell: The facts of life... to make an alteration in the evolvement of an organic life system is fatal. A coding sequence cannot be revised once it's been established.
Batty: Why not?
Tyrell: Because by the second day of incubation, any cells that have undergone reversion mutation give rise to revertant colonies like rats leaving a sinking ship; then the ship sinks.
Batty: What about EMS recombination?
Tyrell: We've already tried it - ethyl, methane, sulfinate as an alkalating agent and potent mutagen; it created a virus so lethal the subject was dead before it even left the table.
Batty: Then a repressor protein; that would block the operating cells.
Tyrell: Wouldn't obstruct replication, but it does give rise to an error in replication so that the newly formed DNA strand carries with it a mutation, and you've got a virus again... but this, all of this is academic. You were made as well as we could make you.
Batty: But not to last.
Tyrell: The light that burns twice as bright burns for half as long - and you have burned so very, very brightly, Roy. Look at you, you're the prodigal son; you're quite a prize.
Batty: I've done... questionable things.
Tyrell: Also extraodinary things; revel in your time.
Batty: Nothing the God of biomechanics wouldn't put you in heaven for.

Batty: I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die

Spud owns four copies of it.

Never gets old.

Be Well.

Damn I hate that movie.

If we're going to give Total Recall credit here, I'd say that Quato was the best character of them all.

The man who shot Liberty Valence

I can't believe they left out Jim Stark.

And what about General Jack Ripper?

And Who could fergit the good doctors here and here?

And what th' hell happened to Charles Foster Kane?

ahh, got it. I thought you were mentioning the same character from the second and third movies. might have seen it sooner if there were an "and" in there somewhere (as in "el mariachi from desperado, el mariachi, and once apon a time in mexico"), or if you had named the movies in order, but no harm, no foul.

Mike Damone in Fast Times, specifically due to his "five point plan"

#4 | Posted by steamingpile

The guy was a dirtbag but cetainly a memorable one.

The "5 Point Plan" is certainly worth a quote cite.

Mike Damone: First of all Rat, you never let on how much you like a girl. "Oh, Debbie. Hi." Two, you always call the shots. "Kiss me. You won't regret it." Now three, act like wherever you are, that's the place to be. "Isn't this great?" Four, when ordering food, you find out what she wants, then order for the both of you. It's a classy move. "Now, the lady will have the linguini and white clam sauce, and a Coke with no ice." And five, now this is the most important, Rat. When it comes down to making out, whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV.

However, that being sed, how can one talk about memorable movie characters and totally fergit to mention Sean Penn's amazing "Jeff Spicoli from that same movie?

Seriously, the guy who took the words "bogus", "gnarly" and "tubular" from his Caleeforneeya surfside upbringing and interjected them into mainstream conciousness until they became oft repeated memes across the world?

Jeff Spicoli: What Jefferson was saying was, Hey! You know, we left this England place 'cause it was bogus; so if we don't get some cool rules ourselves - pronto - we'll just be bogus too! Get it?

/Also a shout out to Ray Walston's "Mr Hand".
//The scenes between them two was most memeworthy.

Yes TS was teh HAWT in that!

Still have a hard time wrapping me wee head around the fact that the same guy who wrote all them James Bond Books also wrote Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

WTF?!

Well, "Truly Scrumptious", "Pussy Galore" and "Honey Ryder" all show a certain consistancy anyways.

Shout to Sean Connery as James Bond and Gert Frobe as Auric Goldfinger in "Goldfinger".

Honor Blackman - "Pussy Galore" - Goldfinger
Britt Ekland - "Mary Goodnight" - Man with the Golden Gun
Halle Berry - "Jinx" - Die Another Day
Lois Chiles - "Holly Goodhead" - Moonraker

Clouseau: And I submit, Inspector Ballon, that you arrived home, found Miguel with Maria Gambrelli, and killed him in a rit of fealous jage!

Dreyfus: What about the maid?
Clouseau: The maid?
Dreyfus: Was he jealous of her too? He strangled her.
Clouseau: It is possible that his intended victim was a man and that he made a mistake.
Dreyfus: Mistake?... in a nudist camp?

Inspector Jacques
Clouseau: How can a blind man be a lookout?
Chief Inspector
Dreyfus: How can an idiot be a policeman? Answer me that.
Inspector Jacques
Clouseau: It's very simple, all he has to do is enlist.

Dr Strangelove?

Luff, luff LUFF that film!

Kubrick read over 50 books about the seeming inevitabilty of a nuclear war between Russia and the US including "Red Alert" by Peter George, which formed the basis fer that flick. Originally it was supposed to be a drama but it kept sliding into becoming a Black Comedy and at some point Kubrick just threw up his hands and wrote it as such. Originally loathed almost universally by the critics it went on to become a Classic of American Cinema and rightfully so.

The original ending involved a massive pie fight, btw.

General Jack D. Ripper: Mandrake, do you recall what Clemenceau once said about war?
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: No, I don't think I do, sir, no.
General Jack D. Ripper: He said war was too important to be left to the generals. When he said that, 50 years ago, he might have been right. But today, war is too important to be left to politicians. They have neither the time, the training, nor the inclination for strategic thought. I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

Tadowe is Gen Jack's luff-chile.

Are you ever right about anything?

Jack rawks out loud but if Heath Ledger doesn't win an post-humous Acadamy Award for his total re-imagining of the Joker then it will outright theft.

That performance set the bar so high it aint even visible from the ground anymore.

"Some men just like to watch the world burn"

Be Well.

Ledger did fine, played it completely different then Jack which was the only way to go but i thought Nicholson played the part with more accuracy to the diolouge. It wasn't dark enough, batman did not have enough character and i don't even have to mention the bat mobile, seriously what the hell was that?

To add some heroines to the list:

Vivien Leigh in Gone with the Wind

Uma Thurman in Kill Bill

"You think the latest Batman wasn't Dark enuff?"

Look at the cinematography, it is a modern look not the timeless Gothic wonderland the original was. The remake could not capture the surreal dark aspect that fits with the story so well. I though Keaton did a better job as batman and found in the new one that aside from ledger the acting was flimsy at best.

That being said, i do not like many remakes. Transformers was pathetic, wonka was worthless, and did you see what they did to the music man? Almost made me cry.

McQueen was mentioned, but.... honestly I don't think his best work was Cool Hand Luke. That'd either go to Bullitt or Hilts (The Great Escape). Can't say anything about the original Thomas Crowne Affair, I never saw it.

McQueen wasn't in Cool Hand Luke...that was Newman. Maybe you were thinking of The Great Escape or Papillon?

oops..you mentioned The Great Escape, sorry.

Transformers was pathetic, wonka was worthless, and did you see what they did to the music man? Almost made me cry.

~Salamandgator

Ya see, was that so hard?

Spud finds he agrees with you three times in a row there.

Transformers was an insult to the intelligence of a grilled cheese sandwich. While Spud luffs the original Wonka with Gene Wilder and luffs Johnny Depp but could not handle the remake. Music Man was a dayglo abortion of a flick.

While Spud can kinda agree with you that Keaton's Batman was more sombre, the rest of the first cast was less than stellar especially when compared directly to the last one.

Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) "Escape from NY"
Hans Beckert (Peter Lorre) "M"
Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) "Maltese Falcon"
Fred Dobbs (Bogart again) "Treasure of the Sierra Madre

Nicky (Christopher Walken) "Deer hunter"
Rocky Sullivan (Jimmy Cagney) "Angels with Diry Faces"

The spoof Seinfeld did of that was hilarious. Elaine sent off to Burma to find Mr. Pederman, her boss, to get him to sign for a hat or something. He's in a dimly lit cave wringing out a washcloth.

That entire scene, in fact -- all the way to the ed where the tinman is chopping down the door.

I heard about that, never tried it. Did try what you're supposed to inhale before watching it though.

I tried. There are a couple of interesting coincidenes, but not enough for a good conspiracy. Sounds like we need a good buffalo bob youtube.com mini-documentary to know for sure, though.

"Of course, my mistaking Newman for McQueen... wow that was just embarrassing."

I wouldn't be embarrassed. The character McQueen played in Papillon, WAS similiar to Newman's Cool Hand Luke character.

An honest mistake in my book.

Ness: Anything within the law.
Malone: And *then* what are you prepared to do? If you open the can on these worms you must be prepared to go all the way. Because they're not gonna give up the fight, until one of you is dead.
Ness: I want to get Capone! I don't know how to do it.
Malone: You wanna know how to get Capone? They pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. *That's* the *Chicago* way! And that's how you get Capone. Now do you want to do that? Are you ready to do that? I'm offering you a deal. Do you want this deal?
Ness: I have sworn to capture this man with all legal powers at my disposal and I will do so.
Malone: Well, the Lord hates a coward.

I was thinkin did anyone here mention GSGT Hartman from Full Metal Jacket?

Holy shit when i watched that film it brought home some memories! You must know that DI has your head from day one UNTIL YOU DIE. I think I have gotten a bit lazy in my older years but sometimes, especially late at night when I go to the bathroom to bursh my teeth i sometimes see my DI in the mirror looking over my shoulder, or when I'm driving or outside alone in the firest hunting I can hear him address me through the sounds of the blowing leaves. Ermey did a unbelievable and frankly PERFECT job as DI Hartman, and not just his voice and face but down to his unwavering stance and then later I found out he really was USMC then I hit myself on the head thinking, "well, duh!!!"

"I was thinkin did anyone here mention GSGT Hartman from Full Metal Jacket?"

absolutely. tis sad that after close to two hundred droppings, he hadn't been mentioned. and he was marvelous.
hal, however, did get early notice, as he should.
other kubrick offerings would be peter sellers in and as dr strangelove, malcolm mcdowell/alex from a clockwork orange, and the aforementioned jack torrance.
i miss stanley.

"I was thinkin did anyone here mention GSGT Hartman from Full Metal Jacket"

Actually, reinheitsgebot did mention Hartman earlier. Great movie...great character. Kubrick's movies have been well represented on this thread. As they should be.

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman - Full Metal Jacket

George C. Scott in Dr. Strangelove was outstandingly bizarre. Sometimes I can't get that march that accompanies the Slim Pickens bomber scenes out of my head.

Everyone in Kelly's Heroes get honorable mention as well.

When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again?

I don't know the name Goatman but I'm going search youtube for it. Thanks.

Former US Marine Corps Drill Instructor R. Lee Ermey was not originally hired to play Gunnery Sgt. Hartman but as a consultant for the Marine Corps boot camp portion of the film. He performed a demonstration on videotape in which he yelled obscene insults and abuse for 15 minutes without stopping, repeating himself or even flinching - despite being continuously pelted with tennis balls and oranges. Stanley Kubrick was so impressed that he cast Ermey as Gunnery Sgt. Hartmann.

That's the name of the tune I'm pretty sure.

That's it. Thanks Goatman.
