The Capitol Visitor Center in Washington D.C. opened Tuesday amid great fanfare and excitement -- and a $621 million pricetag. "In the summertime, because the high humidity and how hot it gets in here, you could literally smell the tourists coming into the Capitol," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. "That is no longer going to be necessary."

That could house a lot of homeless.

Well, at least poor Harry Reid won't have to smell the smelly tourists anymore. Worth every penny.

It's a sad indictment of America when people from all over the world come to see the capitol --------- and it's like visiting an open air sewer.

Last time I was there the monuments where falling apart, the lake in front of Lincoln's monument was green with slime and every public bathroom was like an open piss trench! Even the Vietnam memorial looked like shit!

I mean it was down right embarrassing!

So with that said im sure the "Billions and Billions for a Meaningless, unending, pointless War" bushco crowd will be along any minute to bemoan this "frivolous" expenditure as not in the interest of the American people!

"Well, at least poor Harry Reid won't have to smell the smelly tourists anymore"

Too Late!

Mr. I want your Kids in Debt for Nothing has already spoken!

Harry Reid shouldn't be allowed to handle any budget after this fiasco.

Hey Redneckville - how about not spending billions on the war AND not spending $621,000,000 on a visitor center. Does that work for you?

YEAH!

"Capitol Project Four Years Late"

oops!

except the fact that after the $621,000,000 we actualy have something! Doh!

A visitors center? I'd say that our crumbling bridges and schools are more of an embarassment than a smelly capitol.

Yeah, Harry Reid and a clear sinus.

except the fact that it was originally going to cost $261 million. And what was your reaction after the Bridge to Nowhere was built? After all, in that case something was built as well...

Oh, but a dude with a (D) behind his name is defending it, so you're totally on board!

the estimated cost was 7.000.000 ended up 61,000,000 your government working hard to end waste.

621 mill is chicken scratch these days. at least we've got something tangible for the money. and we got it all for so little, relatively speaking.

i would like to take this opportunity to invite mr reid to STFU. he's an idiot. He, with his parlor palor and delicate sensibilities. the unwashed masses makes him break out in a rash so bad, it affects his ability to be a crooked politician.

a trillion dollar deficit by 2009 a little chicken scratch here and there and soon a big pile of chicken shit.

Our government wastes so much of the taxpayers money on crap like this. Forget the visitor center. Forget all the skyscraper pristine buildings and use the money for the people of the US.

I personally would like to see congress meet in a huge steel pole building warehouse and save money. WTF! They waste so much of our hard earned money on crap!

meanwhile, to their immediate East, the population suffers.

"Harry Reid shouldn't be allowed to handle any budget after this fiasco."

The contracts were given out when the Republican's controlled the House, Senate and White House. The work was supposed to be done 4 years ago when the Republican's still controlled all 3. Yep, must be Harry Reid's fault.

This Time article has a good history of it. It was originally thought up in the 80s and construction actually began in 2000.

"a $621 million pricetag" would have gone along way toward maintenance of the existing problem.
Let Reid buy himself a can of Glade....when confronted with the stinky masses.

Was to cost 150 million. What happened democratic congress?
