Spud's dad recently had to see his best friend of fourty years get put into one of these places. In that case it was a recently built complex and the staff seem to genuinely care about the residents but because of the potential for abuse in these places Spud thinks that it is always best to have an outside agency double check the places with surprise inspections and to have a recording CCTV system as back up to protect both the staff and the patients.

Spud's uncle spent more than 15 years living (if one can use that term) with a severe form of ALS that took so much life out of my aunt in her attempts to keep him at home that it was heart breaking to observe.

Anybody who's in one of these difficult situations really needs to do themselves a favor and rent or buy the movie "Away From Her" as it is a compelling, moving and informative film on the subject.

It shows a 90 year old man being beaten by his caretaker at his home. And his daughter hired this caretaker and brought her father back home to live because he had suffered a stroke due to being beaten by nursing aides when he was at a nursing home!

Looks like the the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society should update it's web site. Maybe they can explain why these compassionate caregivers felt the need to torment these folks. They are also to blame.

The sad part is that this is only a misdemeanor offense, though they could serve consecutive terms of one year for each offense. My bet: they don't serve time for any of it.

The sheer lack of respect these two girls showed towards these elders who are someones father, mother, grandmother, grandfather, brother or sister is saddening.

oh they vote. The just vote with their emotions and feelings, not sound logic or reason.

An elderly friend of mine, who was blind and had Parkinsons, was in a nursing for about a year before his death. I shutter to think of someone like him having to endure the kind of mistreatment these girls meted out. The two girls pictured are pretty on the outside, very ugly on the inside.

I think we all remember the pretty, popular girls from high school. Some of them were so sweet to the faculty that they could do no wrong in their eyes. I suspect that these girls were just like that...always getting away with drinking at parties while the other kids in the house got busted...sweet talking their way out of traffic tickets...stuff like that.

I think it would be fun to watch them try that same play with the judge.

There's not a whole lot to do up in the dark woods of the piney north, I guess, if you have to resort to torturing the infirmed for kicks & jollies.

Why are the elderly being cared for by people so young? I thought a caregiver needed a certain level of education above high school to care for the elderly.
