Abuses of power are abuses of power, no matter their purpose. Every time a politician tries to grant himself powers above and beyond those inherent in his office, you are a little less free. The whole idea behind this country was limited government, with powers held to the level needed for effective governance. Bush has not governed, he has ruled - a thing our Founding Fathers specifically sought to make difficult.

I will, however, grant you that Bush is no Nixon; Tricky Dick never let Spiro Agnew run his hand up his ass and work his mouth like a Muppet.

In the early 1980s, Gaskins was named the "Meanest Man in America" for killing another inmate while in maximum security, a crime for which he was sentenced to death. I was a corporal in USMC headquarters in 1973 and I remember the day October 25 when Nixon ordered the military up to DEFCON 3. The previous day Brezhnev had threatened to intervene in the Yom Kippur War. Nixon made him back down. Nixon may have saved the world from nuclear war. You would have to go back a long way to think of another president who could have stood up to Brezhnev.
