Somali pirates chased and shot at the U.S. cruise liner M/S Nautica with more than 1,000 people on board in the Gulf of Aden but failed to hijack the vessel, a maritime official said Tuesday.

so lets get back to the stewart bit about this

why is it so hard to find the pirates when all you have to do is head for "pirate ally"????/

and then he went into a bit about how bad they are dressed for pirates.......

Is anybody else seeing the cruise ad for "America's Vacation Center" on this thread?

lol

For some reason I get the biggest laugh out of these ragtag group of pirate wannabes.

They don't care who or what size ship they go after.

I can't wait until they try to seize a U.S. Naval aircraft carrier.

That'll should be fun to watch.

In 2005, pirates opened fire on the Seabourn Spirit about 100 miles off the Somali coast. The faster cruise ship managed to escape, and used a long-range acoustic device which blasts a painful wave of sound to distract the pirates.

WTF?

I think there should be a ship disguised as a target--

Then as the pirates approach--bring out the guns and blow them out of the water.

Do this about 10 times and no more pirates.

and used a long-range acoustic device which blasts a painful wave of sound to distract the pirates.

WTF?

This is used to "torture" Gitmo detainees along with Barry Manilow music.

Yeah, the uss cole event still makes me chuckle.

The military and law enforcement have been working on non lethal devices for the last several years. They use everthing from sticky foam to acoustics, to lights and microwaves. The system on the cruise ship might have been a communications device, if so it seems that the pirates got the message.

I would think there should be a lot of money for a merc force to make by providing security for theses ships. A coupla ex-military guys a few javelins and the problem goes away. Never mind the non-lethal, that will only piss then off and aim them at the next passing ship.

After watching the pirates in action taking on huge vessels and making a joke out of every navy on the planet I have decided to support the pirates instead of world order. Any ship that sails within a 1,000 nautical mile radius of Somalia and does not have 50 caliber machine guns manned on all sides deserves to be held for ransom. I absolutely loved the Saudi oil tanker escapade and the Russian arms shipment being held for ransom. I hope the next shipment will have unprotected nuclear missals aboard, then the pirates could hold any country hostage under the threat of total nuclear obliteration. So far the only navy with ANY balls at all is the Indian navy at least they had the courage to fire on and sink one ship...

GOOOOOOOOOOO PIRATES ******************************

We should not forget that the ships being hijacked are not American flag vessels, it says above that this was a US cruise ship but I would be surprised if that is really true because virtually all of the cruise ships fly foreign flags to avoid US taxes, labor laws, unions, etc.
I don't think the US has any obligation to protect vessels that fly foreign flags to avoid US laws and taxes. Let them pay for their own navy.

The navy should act in protecting their own interest and keeping the shipping lanes open is in the US's best interest. I do however believe that the shipping companies should have their own means of providing security via private contractors rather then relying on other countries military.

For some reason I get the biggest laugh out of these ragtag group of pirate wannabes.

Me too. I may change the Retort to an all-pirate news format until the next presidential election starts.

"Yeah, the uss cole event still makes me chuckle."

Yet, when some speedboat gets blown out of water or someone gets shot for not slowing down at a checkpoint in Iraq, US servicemen are "trigger happy".

If someone was smart they'd start selling "extreme cruises", where the cruise ships try to attract pirates on purpose, and the passengers get to shoot back at them.

Seems like an excellent reason to revive cruel.com.

Wow... I bet people would actually pay for the opportunity to do something like that on the high seas. Alot of the border control zealots on our south border for starters.

the love boat!!! something exciting and new!

I may change the Retort to an all-pirate news format until the next presidential election starts.

Isn't that being a little unfair to the Pirates themselves who find it hard to type with hooks fer hands?

Also, the 2012 Elections?

It's started already.

Be Well.

/Linked hawter than a cat fight between Heidi Klum and Halle Barry in a hawt tub.

Article 110 of the U.N.'s Law of the Sea Convention -- ratified by most nations, but not by the U.S. -- enjoins naval ships from simply firing on suspected pirates. Instead, they are required first to send over a boarding party to inquire of the pirates whether they are, in fact, pirates.

Outstanding idea especially if the passengers have the use of several 50 caliber weapons with armor piercing rounds. Until then it looks like the pirates are somewhere around 19 to 0 and are still kicking some major ass

There you all go again, scheming up all the ways you can spend American treasure to police a problem not one you all have ever experienced let alone seen first hand!

See, Pirates have been around for centuries, I used to get warnings about sailing around certain countries over two decades ago, however, much like the Shark Attack garbage of a few years ago, its now trendy and a commercial seller to report on such nonsense to the throngs of mindless TV idiots that now populate America! And how do these "republicans" respond ----------- They demand we Throw Tax Money at it!

"They demand we Throw Tax Money at it!"

I didn't see anything in his post that said he wanted to use tax money for his plan. Can you show it to me?

Awesome idea flag.

Awesome idea flag.

Agreed.

I would clean out whats left of my little 401K for an extended cruise with all the amenities that included several rounds of shoulder fired missile.

Murphy really came up with most of the idea, clear up at post #5, but it sounds like we almost all agree. Maybe the DR could charter a cruise! That is of course if we could keep from shooting at each other.

I'm up for a DR extreme cruise. We could blow the pirates out of the water and still have time for some major bloggling.

The Bush Administration is obviously secretly helping the pirates. Even if they are not giving direct aid to them, the U.S. Navy has orders to not pursue them. The question, then, is why would the Bush Administration give assistance to them? I would offer that perhaps the pirates are offering information on the location of Muslim extremists in Africa. I think we also cannot discount the possibility that they are simply blackmailing someone of high authority in the United States. There's simply no explanation for the inaction on the part of the White House other than implicit support.

That is of course if we could keep from shooting at each other.

Depending on the victim would that be a funny flag or no ????

A couple of armed Texans on the manifest would solve that problem.

Or just an old duffer with a shotgun.

Excellent citation. It says it all.

We've wrapped ourselves up in so much procedural and legal nonsense that we've lost track of the purpose of anti-pirate and anti-terrorist activities. We've imposed restrictions on ourselves that make us enablers of the activities of such creatures, who intrude on the public peace and tranquility.

Rather than disposing of priates by summarily destroying their vessels and hanging the survivors, we engage in self-examination regarding "hurting 'people'," who somehow have elected this anti-social activity. Instead of just elimination them, we use ineffective tactics and enable them to continue their depredations.

I regard to the terrorists at Abu Grabi and Guantanamo, we have a fascination with their welfare and their treatment rather than expediting their elimination as a threat by dispatching them. And our concern with their "rights" borders on insanity.

Why are we so squeamish when it comes to taking reasonable measures to eliminate anti-social behavior that interferes with the processes of a civilized world.

Exterminate the malefactors. If you don't, and if the oxymoronic rules of the UN apply, then the suffering the pirates and terrorists cause is deserved by the idiots who enact and/or comply with these idiotic mandates. Also, observation of restrictions that prevent aggrieved parties from destroying and sacking the headquarters city of the pirates is beyond comprehension.

Law is supposed to be pragmatic and deal with situations. We have "laws," which would deal with WWII combat conditions, but not with the warfare undertaken today. If the tactics of armed forces today had been employed instead of carpet bombing of cities such as Dresden and Tokyo, WWII would still be being fought today. Instead it ended in 3 years 8 months 1 week. We need to get over our nonsensical romantic notions that moderation can be factored into combat, and the goals achieved.

Kill the bastards. Dehumanize them. Of their own volition, they have abandoned their "rights" to any form of procedural or other protections. Kill the pirates. Hang them high. Kill the terrorists. Hang them. And don't have any compunctions regarding the propriety of any actions taken to preserve society, and protect its members and civilization.

I regard to the terrorists at Abu Grabi and Guantanamo, we have a fascination with their welfare and their treatment rather than expediting their elimination as a threat by dispatching them. And our concern with their "rights" borders on insanity.

Actually the concern is for the people in those locations who may not have ever been terrorists. Or do you advocate torturing and perhaps killing x number of innocent people to make sure we get 1 terrorist in the lot?

what would you blow them out of the water with thommy? your keyboard?

Yeah, I'll destroy you HD!

Bwwaahhhaaapppthhhhh!!!

Take that, you bastard!

The Bush Administration is obviously secretly helping the pirates. #29 | Posted by KnowsTooMuch

So I can't help but wondering if you're parodying a leftwing whackjob with absolutely no perspective or actually believe the drivel you write. If it's the latter, what are the odds that the piracy will end after Obama takes office? Will you then blame the Obama Administration?

If the former, good job, you fooled me.

Why are we so squeamish when it comes to taking reasonable measures to eliminate anti-social behavior that interferes with the processes of a civilized world.

Yeah, and Hitler supposedly even made the trains run on time.

While I agree with Johnson's overall sentiment, it is a slippery slope that Western civ has been down several times before.

BTW, the U.S. Navy is only bound to protect ships sailing under the U.S. flag. What do you know, you do get something for those taxes after all.

I think the answer that we will end up with is a change in the legal and financial structure of shipping to allow armed self defense.

In the meantime, we can look forward to lots more pirate tales.

And how do these "republicans" respond ----------- They demand we Throw Tax Money at it!

#23 | Posted by Redneckville

Oh, get over yourself. We have spent billions in bailouts, which is mostly backed by democrats. Murphy's idea would cost pennies and would probably work. What's wrong with policing things like this if we can do it? Someone needs to do it.
