Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Monday ordered his top department leaders to conduct a broad review to determine whether the military, National Guard and Reserve can adequately deal with domestic disasters and whether they have the training and equipment to defend the homeland.

At least they're not saying "Fatherland"

Somehow Ramos and Campean come to mind. They better not shoot any illegals in the Butt or they will get 8 years in solitary confinement.

Obama just confirmed Gates as his choice, and so of course Obama wants to promote the idea of a "national" defense force:

"We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

They have already made their initial appearance, wearing black berets, and "protecting" voters by displaying their truncheons at Pennsylvania voting sites ...

Seig heil to the victory for healthcare and the black-beret, truncheon wielding "defense force" that Gates will determine we will need, eh?

If Bush, or any Republican had *EVER* suggested a neo-Gestapo, you all would never stop your "patriotic" objections. However, if it is an Obama, or *all* the other Democrats who have tacitly agreed with Barry in their deafening silence, then it is "okay", right?

Sieg Heil = Victory Welfare!

Does anyone else cringe whenever they say "homeland?"

Every single time.

"Every single time."

Here, cringe again:

"We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

Or, do you only "cringe" when your knee-jerks about republicans/conservatives/
rightwing?

Does anyone else cringe whenever they say "homeland?"

No, because most of us actually love this country. Hurry, your plane to europe is leaving...

Yes. I can see why the GOPiggies love the term, though. It has that scent of balled-fist-raised-in-the-air, lockstep, bend-to-authoritarianism they love so well.

Speaking of which:

Hi Doc, and I notice that you make me the subject rather than address the FACT that Obama called for a national neo-Gestapo and that Gates had previously dismissed any need for such a civilian force, but now (after re-appointment) calls for a "broad study" of such a need?

You goosesteppers only "cringe" when it reviles Republicans/rightwingers, but turn-around and salute when Obama calls for such a "force" to "protect" our nation!

The FACT is that Gates is "studying" the proposal for OBAMA ... not Republicans ... not the rightwing ...

... and since they are "eCompletely[sic] 'Round the Bend Full-Bore Bonkers ... when they notice that this thread is about OBAMA: ""We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

Hey here's an idea... we could close the bases overseas and bring our men and women back home... :/ I know it sounds crazy, but do we really have to worry about Nazi Germany anymore? Or Italian facism? I am sure we have plenty of areas here in the US to play war-games...

I have enough weaponry, supplies, and military training and experience to protect my house and land...

from enemies...

foreign AND domestic...

Its bad enough that we have the CIA, ATF, & DEA running around the country.

They just want a bigger fucking budget. Corruption is there game, revolving doors are the same.

Soon they can microwave everyone that dares to complain.

Still crazy after all those years...

I thought the constitution was crystal clear as what their role in the US was.

Now in reguard to the NG, that is a little different until they are nationalized.

I don't know if any of you realize just how many "cops" the federal government has in the US now. There are tree cops, fish cops, sage brush cops, just to name a few. Every agency of the government has men with badges working for them as we speak. If we knew the number it would scare us to death.

Yes, have been since 2001.

Of course the dr left suffers from selective reading, and disavows any knowledge that these words were spoken by the messiah....

"We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

HOW do you explain them dudes....?

And not likely to end until at least 2012.

"Every agency of the government has men with badges working for them as we speak."

Try driving the backcountry near the US-Mexico border sometime. And they're not particularly well versed in the niceties of the Constitution, either.

"If we knew the number it would scare us to death."

You're almost certainly on-target there. I don't know the number and I'm extremely concerned. Not Black Helicopter concerned, but it niggles at me nonetheless.

What is an other cool trillion.

If you have a stack of thousand dollar bills in your hand 4" high you would be a millionair. A trillion dollars would be a stack of thousand dollar bills 67 miles high. - Ronald Reagan

The only sites I can find in a quick search seem to be rightoid wackjob blogspots.

Got anything credible as a link?

How's this right from the NYT and rahm emanual

I haven't read any posts here by anybody on the DR Left defending this. But I have read from the DR right about the DR Left rushing to support their "Messiah." Seems to be the new thing for the right to do here ever since Obama kicked McCain's ass in the election.

Anyhoo, I sort of anticipated that with the economy falling into the shitter, the government might get a little anxious about an increase in crime. Looks like this is how they're responding. For the record as a "member of the DR Left", the idea of government police sounds creepy. Just like Blackwater actually existing is totally fucking creepy.

I could be wrong but I thought the Civilian National Security Force referred to is the National Guard which IS the appropriate use if the Guard as opposed to GWB who allowed the Military to stand guard (I believe in Georgia) during the election just in case of civil unrest.

I see nothing wrong with this.

The US already spends more on military preparedness than ALL the rest of the other nations of the world put togther.

Enough.

We won't even protect our own borders.

This is not for the NG--it is to make everyone a community organizer with 3-4 months training.

Put in billions to the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, Health Corps, Senior Corps, here a corp, there a corp, everywhere a corp corp.

Another way to grow the gov't with crapola programs that do nothing. Another way for Obama to spend money we don't have for shit we don't need.

That is the way all good libs handle an arguement they start to loose. They attack you, not what you said.

Long live the new obama brown shirts.
