Hillary Rodham Clinton has decided to give up her Senate seat and accept the position of secretary of state, making her the public face around the world for the administration of the man who beat her for the Democratic presidential nomination, two confidants said Friday to the New York Times.

A quarter century of Bush's, and Clinton's! Hurrah for America!

Something like 80 percent of Dems and 57 percent of the country are for this in recent polls.

It was actually kinda fun watching Rachel Maddow's guest last night knocking down her typically snide remarks about this appointment as juvenile.

goddamn those are some big letters

Good riddence. -The Senate

goddamn those are some big letters

That was an accident. I've fixed it. Funny, tho.

Bill Clinton will enjoy it knowing Hillary's out of the country. Congrats to her and I trust Bill's heart can handle the excess, uh, pounding.

OK, Secretary of all the states 'cept for the cheesy ones.

I'm actually interested in seeing who's going to replace her in the Senate.

Senator Bloomberg, anyone?

Now, if she can only keep avoiding those Bosnian snipers...

Bad move by Obama. She's going to encounter too much sniper fire now.

Well this ought to be fun. Plebty of ammo for the late night TV host and cheap comic clubs.

Jinx

The circus returns.

the headline scared me. I just saw big letters before my eyes focused. I almost expected it to say end of earth coming today. I think she will be great and screw lynn samuels for thinking otherwise

I want the Iranians to know that if I'm the president, we will attack Iran In the next 10 years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them. -Hillary Clinton

CHANGE YOU CA--oh, nevermind.

I was hoping that she would be elected president and bring back some of the furniture she and Bill pilfered.

WISGOD perhaps that is why Americans chose judgement over experience. Hillary has experience, knowledge and knows many foreign leaders, under the direction of President Obama she will do a fine job carrying out the foreign policy that he uses good judgement in directing. Personally, I am much more comfortable with her as Sec. of STate than I would have been with her as president.

A few nights ahgo Jay Leno joked: "While Hilary is taking care of foreign affairs, Bill will make sure he's taking care of domestic affairs".

Ah, good stuff!

CHANGE YOU CA--oh, nevermind.

Well, a change from "i don't know where America is" Rice to a competent Sof S, anyways. Nice to see Bubba's willing to take a pay cut; his global reputation will be a big assist to Hillary.

Danni, without knowing who else was being considered, I really don't have a problem with her appointment. She is tough. Bill's seen to that. I wish her well.

Y'know, this is beginning to feel like an actual nation again.

Obama is such a nice President. He knew that comedians were uncomfortable making jokes about him, so he give Lewis Black Hillary and Biden to play with. Now THIS is a nice guy! Almost a nice as GHWB giving us Quayle. Sure, this is no Palintainment, but it will due and besides, Palin just won't go away. Turkey anyone?

But it will do! It is not a library book to return. I have no idea why I typed "due." Might as well have typed "dew" and called her morning dampness.

"While Hilary is taking care of foreign affairs, Bill will make sure he's taking care of domestic affairs".

I suspect Bill will catch a ride on the plane and have foreign affairs, too.

And it will keep him in his place in other matters.

WISGOD to be completely honest here, I'm thrilled about President Obama but I'm not necessarily so thrilled about this appointment. I think she will do a good job and probably he knows better than I do, I sure hope so.

This just in.....Bill Clinton will live at Guantanamo during Hillary's term as SEc. of STate.

This just in, Hillary appoints Lorena Bobbit Under-Secretary incharge of Bill Clinton.

I think both camps were sick of hearing all the punditry the past week since they met and decided not to wait to get the news out.

Last night Chris Tweety Matthews spend a whole segment bitching and moaning about talking heads who could do nothing else but bitch and moan about this.

Bizarre.

Looks like Bill Clinton's 3rd term in office. His staff and wife will be running the country AGAIN.

How do you Obama lemmings feel about the so called CHANGE now? LMFAO!!

I bet anything that Obama will even bang an intern just like Bill.

I still wonder what some people hated most about the Clinton admin, the peace or the prosperity?

(that's peace, not piece!)

Wow, huge "Second Coming" headline. LOL

The Clinton's are extremely well respected around the world.

This is a good appointment.

Lincoln's "Team of Rivals" well studied by Obama.

I doubt Hillary will appoint anyone to be the *ahem* under-secretary to Bill, scissors or not!

Now we are really fucked!

ack acK aCK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK!

whitewater

Those cabinet meetings are going to be a hoot when foreign affairs come up. Joe isn't going to like sitting in the back seat.

Can the Repubs filibuster her nomination?

With Biden and Hillary on the team I think foreign affairs and policy are well in check. I think he can now focus more on the economy. I suspect Gates will stick around for a while from the current admin.

WASHINGTON A senior Democratic official says New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson has emerged as a serious contender for Commerce Secretary in President-elect Barack Obama's Cabinet.

Richardson had been in the running for secretary of state, but is under consideration for Commerce now that Obama plans to nominate Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of state after Thanksgiving.

The official with knowledge of the private Cabinet discussions spoke on background because the deliberations are not final.

You know what, UTASTAFF, I did not vote for Bill in either election, however I will be fine with all the stuff above that you posted just as long as Obama does not assault and rape the USA and leave her stranded in a ditch by the side of the road as Bush/Cheney have done!

"Can the Repubs filibuster her nomination?"

That remains to be seen, still two undecided Senate races. I think if they did though they would lose even more support.

58 Senate seats DEM (so far) and 2 independents who caucus with the DEMS. Probably not.

I think there are hundreds of millions of Americans who agree with you GEEZER. Billions around the world.

AU it will be the new Congress that gets to "advise and consent" right?? We could get to 60.

Get real...Cheney will still be running the government from Obama's hypo-glycemic dog house in the Rose Garden.

New Senate as part of the new Congress that is.

Looks like some of our DR shills are on the wrong page of the talking points today...

Top Republican says Obama 'off to a good start'

WASHINGTON (Reuters) A top Republican said on Friday that Democratic U.S. President-elect Barack Obama is "off to a good start" and indicated he was pleased to see President George W. Bush get ready to leave.

"Our members, in one way, are kind of relieved by the departure of an administration that became unpopular and made it very difficult for us to compete," Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell told reporters on Capitol Hill.

Yawn. Could he honestly not find anyone else?

AU it will be the new Congress that gets to "advise and consent" right?? We could get to 60.

#43 | Posted by danni

For purposes of preventing filibusters we're already there with 58 + 2 Independents. We certainly could get to 60 DEMS though.

While Hillary Clinton represented the U.S. on the world stage at important moments while she was first lady, there is scant evidence that she played a pivotal role in major foreign policy decisions or in managing global crises.

"She was never asked to do the heavy lifting" when meeting with foreign leaders, said Susan Rice, who was an assistant secretary of state in the Clinton administration and is now advising Obama. "She wasn't asked to move the mountain or deliver a harsh message or a veiled threat. It was all gentle prodding or constructive reinforcement. And it would not have been appropriate for her to do the heavy lifting."

Pressed in a CNN interview this week for specific examples of foreign policy experience that has prepared her for an international crisis, Clinton claimed that she "helped to bring peace" to Northern Ireland and negotiated with Macedonia to open up its border to refugees from Kosovo. She also cited "standing up" to the Chinese government on women's rights and a one-day visit she made to Bosnia following the Dayton peace accords.

But her involvement in the Northern Ireland peace process was primarily to encourage activism among women's groups there, a contribution that the lead U.S. negotiator described as "helpful" but that an Irish historian who has written extensively about the conflict dismissed as "ancillary" to the peace process.

"It was a nice thing to see her there, with the women's groups. It helped, I suppose," Coogan said. "But it was ancillary to the main thing. It was part of the stage effects, the optics.

The Macedonian government opened its border to refugees the day before Clinton arrived to meet with government leaders. And her mission to Bosnia was a one-day visit in which she was accompanied by performers Sheryl Crow and Sinbad, as well as her daughter, Chelsea, according to the commanding general who hosted her.

Report: Coleman lead over Franken now under 100 votes.

CHICAGO (Reuters) President-elect Barack Obama has selected Timothy Geithner to be his Treasury secretary, putting the respected head of the New York Federal Reserve in a key role as the U.S. economy staggers toward recession, NBC news reported on Friday.

I'll have the grill ready. At least I would have pay for the Kingsford.

"Report: Coleman lead over Franken now under 100 votes."

Perhaps earlier reports are wrong, Christmas may come sooner than I thought.

As Fred G Sanford would say... "It is better to give than to receive five of these across your lips"

Just out of curiosity, UTA, HTF do you conclude the Clitnons are in any way in charge again by Hil being SoS? Are you that daft, or are you just pissing because it's Obama? Last I checked, SoS did not run the country, they merely served, at the president's whim, no less.

I think the thing that strikes me most about this is I'm hearing around the net a lot of the same toads that swore to vote for McCain because Obama beat Hillary NOW saying that Obama is full of it and the worst of the worst because he's appointed Hillary.

Some people need to get a life.

"Report: Coleman lead over Franken now under 100 votes."

With the majority of the uncounted votes are from predominantly Democratic areas, no less.

Screw the haters, Franken sees thru the BS that is government and will be a fine Senator.

Better than the actors-turned-executives that the GOP has put up to date, I am sure.

I believe the correct term is Flying Spaghetti Monster.

In his political career Norm Coleman has already lost an election to a professional wrestler. Will he hit the quinella and lose to a semi-funny comedian next?

Too bad they did not name her for Secretary of DEFENSE!

She could crack the whip on all of those GENERALS at the Pentagon who were giving her SHIT earlier in the year about planning the WITHDRAWAL from Iraq!!

Barack Obama, December 27, 2007: "The real gamble in this election is playing the same Washington game with the same Washington players and expecting a different result."

Her last leadership role was health care reform...

I hate rain on your parade, but this is not the most important story, it's the one sucking the most oxygen, like it always happens when the Clintons are involved.

To me it is more important that Obama named who he wants at treasury, some guy named Tim Geitner. Apparently the markets like this move. If you haven't noticed, the Dow Jones went up 494 today, which would be like +6%.

A quarter century of Bush's, and Clinton's! Hurrah for America!

Change you can believe in!

For all the talk of change, Obama is going for experience. This election, according to many, was an election about change vs experience. Change supposedly won, but change needs experience to happen I suppose.

I don't understand why people can't see Hillary Clinton's beauty. She has nice curves and great legs

I posted that up the thread a ways, Member, but nary a comment. Geitner is the head of the NY Federal Reserve and very respected.

But it seems as if our friends would rather expend their energy crying about nothing changing than commenting on a very well qualified new face coming into the mix.

Your kidding right? All you libtards did was call for change! Really. These comments on his picks are warrented because he seems to be drafting the Clinton adm. as his. You guys were SCREAMING for change from business as usual. How typical. On both sides to be fair.

Somebody's really missing the boat on this one, not providing you with a pay-per-view Hillary Channel courtesy of the Wank-O-Rama Network.

Actually, Crispee, I was referring to Reagan and Schwartzenegger.

And BTW, Ventura was not a bad governor. He just pissed off the RWNJ's and the PC nannies simultaneously. How can I not respect that?

2 party rule is bad enough. Hello 1 party rule.

I suggest she start shopping for a midddle eastern pantsuit before Lane Bryant goes belly up.

well if worse comes to worse, we will see what a Clinton admin would have been like if the economy was crap... since Obama doesn't have the dot com bubble and the beginnings of the housing bubble to hide under...

So we shall see how this works out.

But it seems as if our friends would rather expend their energy crying about nothing changing than commenting on a very well qualified new face coming into the mix.
Can you list Hillary's qualifications for Sec of State. Her only leadership role as health care was a disaster.

This appointment is nothing but the same ol' politics with the same ol' politicians. Like Obama said "Why expect anything to be different?'.

Pay back to the feminazi's

At this time the most important change would be Secretary of the Treasury. We need to stop fatcats from sucking the middle class dry. Michael Hudson and/or Paul Craig Roberts would be fabulous. Hudson worked for Kucinich, Canada, and some Eastern European countries. Roberts worked for Reagan. Any cleanup is not going to be easy, but unlike Paulson or Rubin, these two would never bullshit you much less steal.

For Secretary of State give me a peacenik. Hagel, Sanders, Kucinich come to mind, but there may be others.

Don't get me wrong, Hillary is better than Bush or Cheney, but she has been persistently pro military action, which does not suit a Secretary of the State well. Similar, yet possibly better than Albright or Rice. Albright said starving 500,000 Iraqi children to death during the decade long embargo against them was "worth it". What kind of a State representative is that? Hillary will probably hire Albright again.

2 party rule is bad enough. Hello 1 party rule.

#83 | Posted by LIVE_OR_DIE

The other party had 1 party rule. Look where that got us. Let's hope the DEMS can straighten out everything the GOP's shot at one party rule f'd up.

Obama's possible picks so far -- Sebelius, Richardson, and Mrs. Clinton -- seem to lean toward general administrative and leadership abilities as opposed to specialized expertise.

One could make the argument that he's trying to build a cabinet of equals. Could work. Could be a disaster.

Personally, I'm not comfortable with the job of SoS being some sort of consolation prize for losing the nomination. That better not be what's going on here.

Personally I think the Hillary pick is inspired for many reasons that have been spouted by others more knowledgable than me. a) it keeps her out of the senate where, for whatever reason she could be a pain in the ass b) it is a consolation prize of sorts for a woman who ran a good race, c) it is conciliatory, and will hopefully shut the remaining hill hags up d) Hillary is the ORIGINAL pit bull, she is going to be one tough SoS and will not take shit from any world leader. Personally I think it is a great pick.

I think this is good news. It once again shows Obama's Political genius at work.

With his (REAL) Leadership at the helm this is shaping up to be a powerhouse of a cabinet.

I look forward to seeing them in action.

Come on January 20th!

Corky's thread?

That's fitting, thinks Spud.

Hill as SoS is a good move.

She'll be able to hit the ground running and she won't hafta wear a "Hello, my name is" name tag

The only real question in Spud's mind is "Will Obama leave Reid in charge in the Senate?"

Cos if so that is a lack of change that nobody is gonna believe in.

Anybody else got future cabinet appointment predictions?

Richardson fer SecInt and Powell fer SecEd.

/Spud called it first!

Be Well.

Richardson fer SecInt

News just said Commerce

News just said Commerce.

~AU

D'oh!

Still not official.

Commerce makes sense and Richardson certainly needs some payback fer bucking the Clinton machine when he did in order to endorse BHO.

/And get called a "Judas" by Jim "Skeletor" Carville fer hius troubles.

Speculation also sed that he was up fer old gig at Sec Energy.

Be Well.

Right you are, SPUD

All speculation until an announcement and press conference with the nominees.

What qualifications does one need other than:
1) Stubborn but charismatic personality, with a reputation for being tough.
2) The ability to politick.
and
3) A pretty comprehensive world knowledge.

She's got those three, despite her other qualities, which I have historically had problems with.

She's not setting national policy here, she's following the directives of the President. It's a good fit, and in the event it's not, it's easily remedied.

***** BREAKING NEWS *****

Obama will appoint Kucinich as White House janitor according to insiders of the Obama tranasition team.

Developing .....

I don't see any problem with it.

Help me libs. Who was it that said: "Don't worry about your friends, but keep your enemies close".

Someone who "graduated near the top of their class" should surely know the actual quote and who said it, right Oozie?

" Who was it that said: "Don't worry about your friends, but keep your enemies close".

Can't recall, but I hope it weren't Caesar...

two things come to mind

all of the campaign they rarely agreed on foreign policy and now he puts her in charge of that??

yeah sure, he';s the pres and all so how long will she stay..hasnt there been like one secty of state that stayed the whole time...fdr's wasnt it??

and the other thing this shows...obamas big 'vetting' of cabinet people was a total sham because if bill answered all of the questions that we read were asked, there is NO WAY IN HELL that they would have passed the muster

and here is a question

WHEN< not IF in my mind she leaves....will it hurt or help obama politically?

and all through the campaign we heard all sorts of fear tactics about

a 3rd term of bush if mccain is elected

and what are we getting

a 3rd term of clinton

now THATS CHANGE we can believe in....

"and the other thing this shows...obamas big 'vetting' of cabinet people was a total sham because if bill answered all of the questions that we read were asked, there is NO WAY IN HELL that they would have passed the muster"

Exactly, which is what all the big bruhaha was about, and why Bill had to grovel and promise he'd do anything.

Meh. He's Bill Clinton, whaddya do?

I guess but it does take some of the high and mighty out of the obama policy of vetting those people

and let me remind you

in the article I read...it said that he released MOST OF the names and that has to include more than just the nickle and dime people

I'll be an S.O.B. Bubba's little dyke is going to be the Sec. of State. Well blow me down!!!

interesting choice of words there at the end...

and what better job could he ask for of her

is he already looking at when her first long trip abroad is and has he already started calling some girls to come over

in the article I read...it said that he released MOST OF the names and that has to include more than just the nickle and dime people

#107 | Posted by bushlovertwo

He released the names of everyone who gave over $250.

This is a huge mistake. Obama had the chance of a lifetime to rid us of the Clintons. I voted for BO, but I can't see a fit with her in there. Fucked again.

This is setting itself up to be the most corrupt administration in US history. (Shouldn't have expected different from a Chicago politician.) I am curious what Bill's new "consulting fee" the next time American Ports Security is up for bid...

Note to Dumbo: Don't fly ANYWHERE with Hiden, Belegosi, and Reed while the Hildebeast is Secretary of State. You might be surprised how many things can go mechanically wrong with Air Force One!

You might be surprised how many things can go mechanically wrong with Air Force One!

Only if McCrash is the pilot.

i thought this admin. was going to be about change, hope and a new direction for the country

his staff is the same ol' same ol' washington cronies

Maverick,

This administration will be about change. In the next four years, you are going to see huge numbers of dems CHANGE their minds about the administration that is the MOST "incompetent" and "corrupt". Hide and watch me be proven right!

"In the next four years, you are going to see huge numbers of dems CHANGE their minds about the administration that is the MOST "incompetent" and "corrupt"."

I'm going out on a limb here: I'm pretty sure most Democrats, along with most independents and, I dare say, a sizeable number of Republicans, agree that the George W. Bush administration is the MOST incompetent and corrupt (no quotation marks necessary) in the history of the United States of America.

No CHANGE of mind necessary.

Hans

Hans,

I hate to point this out to you, but dumbo hasn't even taken office yet and he is already doing "business as usual". Let's remember that the Hildebeast's husband was taking $2 million consulting fees to promote the Dubai Ports deal when she was a senator. Looks like his fees are going up. Remember the person appointed as attorney general oversaw the pardons given to folks...after a few donations had been made to the beastie's senate campaign.

Don't' think Bush sank to any of those levels!
