Kathleen Parker: As Republicans sort out the reasons for their defeat, they likely will overlook or dismiss the gorilla in the pulpit. Three little letters, great big problem: G-O-D.

OUTSTANDING!!! I could not agree more! If the GOP would do that I would become a majority party again. The past several years the economic conservatives in the party have been neglected and the social conservatives have taken a prominent role. It's time to reverse this. Bring out the economic conservatives! Don't mess around with divisive issues like gay marriage and stem cells, focus on the economy. It's the economy stupid!

That's like taking the C-O-N out of Wisconsin

- Cheezus

Great article.

with this kind of innovations we'll never see GOP back....time to put it out of its misery.

"Either the Republican Party needs a new base -- or the nation may need a new party."
--------

I couldn't agree with this more. How about a party that prefers less government instead of bloated inefficient, unsustainable government? Give people a choice.

I wouldn't want to have to read her email for the next few months. The Palinites are going to be angry! Maybe they will forget about our new....black....president for a while.

If the GOP would do that I would become a majority party again.

It's OK Member... you can be a party without the GOP, but I doubt you will ever be a Major one!

But, yes, if the GOP dropped it's "Bull Shit" based Platform and based it on Reality for a change they could indeed become a major party again.

Those that count the GOP down and out are only fooling themselves. They will change and adapt or they will die out and go the way of the Know Nothings that they have tried to emulate.

I think they will choose change.

Just like we all did!

Nice to see America running in a forward gear once more. The "God Squad" may have been a large percentage of the original settlers of this land but the rest of the civilized world (by that I of course mean the area of the civilized world I have any right to comment on - Western Europe) has more or less moved past bringing God into it's politics (and indeed into their homes and lives to greater and greater extent) to muck things up and it's high time time America did a little sprint to catch up. It seems even some of the right can now see this, the light at the end is a little brighter every day.

Er.....10 billion dollars in debt. The part of the Republican Party that did that wasn't the religious fanatics. The Party of fiscal irresponsibility won't get my vote just by expelling all the crazies.

As if people would flock back to a party of fiscal conservatives should they take over the GOP. A few libertarian types maybe, but not enough to withstand the hoping masses who think cutting 1 dollar from a bloated inefficient program is evil and heartless.

Newsworthy flag!

Sad but true.

Things are going to have to get a whole lot worse, before they get better.

The problem is that people confuse democracy and freedom. The proper goal for GOP ought to be the preservation and expansion of individual liberty, not a more participatory democracy. Yet democracy is assumed to be the same thing as freedom--which it is not.

I want to schtup Scarlett Johannsen and that ain't gonna happen either!

Eventually they need to ditch the fundamentalist vote and start trying to appeal to a broader segment of Americans, including middle American conservatives who don't think God is the guiding force in our government. Anyone with a brain knows that the fundies will vote Republican anyways since it's still less unholy than voting for those crazy baby-killing democrats.

"The proper goal for GOP ought to be the preservation and expansion of individual liberty, not a more participatory democracy."

Well one thing is for sure, the GOP has not tried to expand participatory democracy, exactly the opposite.

L-O-D,

You'd be surprised, and I respectfully disagree with you. There are plenty of Americans out there who are looking for a fiscally conservative alternative to the two major parties, who spend the same amount of money on different things.

Here's a good start:
www.house.gov

Yeah! Let's increase participatory democracy, by eliminating the secret ballot for example!

What about privacy? Don't people have a right to privacy when it comes to voting?

I agree totally with parker-been saying the same thing for months. The big question is-since people do expect a more interventionist government-Bush has pretty well killed the Reagan vision- the GOPpers will have to either stay in bed with the evanjihadists for their support and vote bloc (thought even that is diminishing), go Democrat Lite or go fiscal only conservative and spend a bunch of time in the wilderness, before the economy heals and people get back to thinking about needing less support.
Even then, most of the social programs implemented by then will be as sacrosanct as medicare and SS are.

Of course, the country could go broke before either of those events happen. Obama can walk and chew gum at the same time, the US economy can't. And just to piss the Righties off-Reagan or Bush didn't implement tax cuts-only deferred payments. A "tax cut" using borrowed money isn't really a tax cut.

Outstanding. If those things only would happen, I'd absolutely, sincerely, soberly consider changing parties.

The gorilla in the room isn't G-O-D. It's the GOP's unwillingness to acknowledge the other gorilla in their room....W-A-R that is the real problem.

Until we as a country let go of the fear of the evil, Muslim, terrorist...our economy will collapse under the weight of our military/industrial complex. The Muslim radicals will bring this country to it's knees without ever having to fire another shot!

The Republican Party is largely comprised of white, married Christians. Anyone watching the two conventions last summer can't have missed the stark differences: One party was brimming with energy, youth and diversity; the other felt like an annual Depends sales meeting.

Nice!

And as the u.s. (or in this case the gop) slowly realizes the perils of intertwining religion and state, every other civilized country looks on, wondering how such an advanced society can be stuck in such an archaic model, such an outdated thought process.

Time to shake the god-monkey off your backs people...you'll feel better for it and govern more intelligently.

"""The gorilla in the room isn't G-O-D. It's the GOP's unwillingness to acknowledge the other gorilla in their room....W-A-R """

Many think that the W-A-R was started by the u.s on G-O-D's behalf...crusade anyone?

Georgie "god told me to invade" Bush.

the other felt like an annual Depends sales meeting.

Posted by briwo at 2008-11-19 04:50 PM

I wouldn't know, Briwo. I've never been to an annual Depends sales meeting. I'll have to take your word for it.

Repubs made their own bed. All by themselves. They now must lie in it, crumbs and all.

Repubs understood that they couldn't win on archaic economic principles, 19th century voodoo laissez-faire that catered to big corporations and left real people to starve by the wayside.

So they forged an unholy (literally) alliance with troglodytes of sub-normal IQ whose deity deems fetuses and stem cells to be people as those who prefer the company of their own gender are non-people.

OF COURSE we need a new minority party, one that just might appeal to someone's common sense. But the party of Bush and Cheney, McCain and Palin ain't it. herm

Thanks for posting that Joe. Very interesting idea. Anyone know of a site that post bills like that with the ability for open debate. If the people truly wish to have a say in their government a site setup like drudge open for debate would be a little more useful than "boa constrictor eats 800 lb blind black republican"

Anyone with a brain knows that the fundies will vote Republican anyways since it's still less unholy than voting for those crazy baby-killing democrats.

Joe, I think they realize that but are afraid the evanjihadists won't pull out their check books or won't volunteer or even vote.

If the republicans would just realize that by basing their party on fundy christians they are completely alientating center people like me then they would have a chance of getting somewhere. I am a fiscal conservative, if they had one single idea that I could hang my hat on I would be on board but they are totally without a platform right now, the only platform they have is "if you don't believe in Jeebus you are a anti-american, traitor and we don't want you" what kind of platform is that?

Let us not Forget Barrack Obama is a man of faith and did not go to a liberal watered down social club church for the past 20 years. What will calm down the evangelical conservative right wing is when the Ultra Liberal Godless Left wing calms down ...until then you will see the push and pull or the ying and yang of both groups fighting for the soul of America.

You stupid fucks, it is because the GOP has forgotten their GOD that you assclowns were allowed to win, only when the GOP recovers it's moral compass will it be a strong winning party again.
GOD has ways to bring you back to his foal.
The USA deserves everything it has unleashed on itself.
You are living in a great time in history, you will see the one true living GOD, and I don't mean that asswipe obama,or the antiChrist, as he has already blinded you lefty assclowns to the truth, you have turned America into a modern day Sodom, a shithole, a banana republic of the obamanation of desolation.
You believe in your politicians to bring you out of darkness, they can't find their deadasses with both hands tied behind their backs. You fucking leftys don't know what you want, just have the laws allow you to butt fuck each other, kill the innocent in the womb so you don't have to question your abominable actions, you can always blame it on society and the law, well it was not this way in America, you did'nt win back the country, you won a one way ticket to hell, you will have to answer to GOD for perverting his creation.

GOD/Jesus 2012, let the rapture begin.

Don't mess around with divisive issues like gay marriage and stem cells, focus on the economy. It's the economy stupid!

I am wondering why you liberals don't drop these issues? Why do you force us to accept these issues?

Liberals were the ones who forced these issues on us, they weren't even an issue just a few years ago. BTW Stem cell research can be done exactly the same with normal cells.

Leeches can draw blood as well as a syringe.

They're hardly the same thing.

Gay folks want equal right under the law. Homophobic religulous wingnuts oppose them. If you Rtards stopped trying to stick yer noses into other people's business. ie. Gay Marriage, Stem Cell, Research, Abortion etc etc then the world would be a much better place.

The economy and the degrading enviroment and the overpopulated earth are far more significant issues in the grand scheme of things but the GOP with it's fundy base of Rtarded wingnuts have politicised these issues so divisively that the country is almost split into two armed camps over them.

Liberals were the ones who forced these issues on us, they weren't even an issue just a few years ago

You can't be that stupid.

Nobody is THAT stupid.

/Okay, maybe Jerry Fallwell was but he's dead now.

Be Well.

GOP clean up their act? Not when idiots like DeMint, et al think Ms. Palin is their ticket come 2012.

I foresee two parties emerging from the current GOP. One may more resemble Republicans of the Ike era, the other, may more resemble a Three Stooges short.

From above...

"Er.....10 billion dollars in debt. The part of the Republican Party that did that wasn't the religious fanatics."

This is the OTHER 10,000 lbs. Elephant in the GOP
room.

It's one thing to SAY you're Fiscally Conservative,
and another to Practice it. Far and away, the more fiscally conservative party--since REAGAN--has been the Democratic Party.

Go ahead...just look at the Statistics...call up some Bar Graphs by typing Federal Deficit by President or some such into Google...

Do a bit of research...

And guess what you will get if you get rid of the Fiscal Irresponsibility and the Religious Goons out of the Republican Party.....you will almost have the Democratic Party...well that, minus any minorities...oh yeah...and any care for the environment...

I really wonder, often, in fact, why people of faith would want the GOP in their GOD. Seems to me that politics has ruined religion, not the other way around. If I were a man o' the cloth, I'd try to discourage my flock from getting involved in the business of the government.

and she is wrong again

JUST AS RUSH said yesterday and I agree with him

moderate republicans wanted a moderate candidate and THEY GOT One with mccain and he STILL lost and palin wasnt the reason
we CONSERVATIVES need to STAND UP for our values and convictions, NOT move away from them

so this parker lady continues to move further left
maybe soon she will catch up to chuck hagle

"JUST AS RUSH said yesterday and I agree with him"

Sucks to be you, pal.

we CONSERVATIVES need to STAND UP for our values and convictions

Until the dems have enough time to completely fuck things up worse, your convictions will be all you have. And then your party will pick up where the dems left off in fucking everything up.. 2 party system is awesome! By all means keep your party allegiances in tact...

Sucks to be you, pal.

#39 | Posted by LetUsPrey at 2008

no it really doesnt...PAL

and lets see....reagan won 49 states and bush 41 won 48 wasnt it????

and no one kept his conservative values more than reagan as I have said before..this nonsense about him and tip compromising is liberal fairy tale..
reagan got tip to go with him.....

but again....dont mark twain the gop.

"and no one kept his conservative values more than reagan"

Conservative values? Like 241 American heros killed and no reaction other than cut and run?

Conservative values? Like plunging the nation into deep debt?

Conservative values? Like selling arms to our enemies?

Those conservative values?

He sure did keep them.

Hans

"JUST AS RUSH said yesterday..."

No he didn't.

Hans

oh woooo okay then it was DAY BEFORE yesterday...big whoop

and what are you doing out of the rubber room already this morning???

"oh woooo okay then it was DAY BEFORE yesterday...big whoop"

I am a BIBLE THUMPING CHRISTIAN and proud of it. Any politician that invokes the name of GOD in his campaign just to win votes is wrong. Since when do politicians have morals anyway? Remember all the photo-ops of Bill and Hillary carrying their Bibles and walking hand in hand into church? Bill must have been sleeping during the sermon.
Leave your religion at home when it comes to politics. GOD AND POLITICS IS AN OXYMORON-because politics and morals do not mix.

BL2,

Does it give you reassurance that the standard bearers for the direction you want the GOP to take are Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin?

And Bill Clinton was twice the fiscal conservative that Ronald Reagan was. Just compare the growth in the size of the federal government and the national debt between the two. There's a big difference between the talk of so-called "fiscal conservatives" and the reality of their policies.

your premise that rush is a standard bearer for the gop is incorrect
he is a conservative first
as far as palin..what she does from here on will make a real difference

I see the gop turning to people like jendil from louisianna

and clinton....calling him conservative just shows how far left the dems have gone
he wasnt the raging liberal that obama HAS BEEN but he had a republican congress run by one of the smartest people out there and his name was newt which is why he was my first choice for gop pres candidate...........

and you are absolutely right about thier policies

I am on record as NOT being on board with thier spending record.............so I feel that the answer isnt in comparing past leaders but looking ahead at people like jindel....powenty from minn, I am not so sure of

TWO things I AM SURE OF is that hans is a dipshit and I have to go..

have a great day

AND HANS>...see what good debate TWO people can have when a CRACKPOT ASSWIPE Like you isnt involved...

I see the gop turning to people like jendil from louisianna

I, like many others, don't know enough about Bobby Jindal but, from what I have seen, I like. He seems pragmatic and not a strict ideologue, like Newt. Newt, while very intelligent, could never lead this nation...he's just not electable! He's a lying, hypocritical, morally bankrupt excuse of a human being, who encouraged the marriage between fiscal conservatives and religious fanaticals. I wouldn't think the GOP would want to go down that road again!

"GOD has ways to bring you back to his foal."

He sirely do. Mare and mare god makes hisself known. herm

Taking that last rant in full, "Rightnut" most really have overdosed today.

Then some DR newbie weighs in with "politics and morals do not mix." Maybe that's how it is on the right side of the aisle, but for us libs, morals IS what politics is all about.

"TWO things I AM SURE OF is that hans is a dipshit and I have to go."

If ya gotta go, BLT, go. Hope everything comes our okay in the end. herm

What I enjoy most on this site is seeing people being reminded of what they posted - and bitching about it. Thanks Hans! Just don't do it to me or you are toast!
