A Saudi supertanker hijacked by pirates with its $100 million oil cargo was anchoring off Somalia on Tuesday, the U.S. navy said. "At this time, Vela is awaiting further contact from the pirates in control of the vessel," the shipping arm of the state oil giant Saudi Aramco announced.

Wasn't me. I only hijack chocolate.

YEAH! Because Terrorism is like so yesterday! Piracy is IN now! Piracy is back in fashion!

Neil boortz was emphasizing that these pirate are "Muslim" as if that makes the crime more heinous!

No mention from him however that the Oil hijacked belongs to Muslims too (cause we Americans haven't paid them Muslims for it yet)!

I think he wants America to attack these Muslims so as to save the other Muslims profit margins!

Let the Saudi Arabian Navy handle it. We shouldn't lift a pinky finger to help them.

Call the Iraqi Navy!

politicalhumor.about.com

These Somali pirate tales make me laugh so hard.

It's always a bunch of ragtag pirate wannabes in some old speed boat yet they think nothing of attacking the British Navy, or an oceanliner cruise ship, and now it's a huge Saudi oil supertanker! They don't have much in the way of brains but you have to give these faux pirates credit for having the cajones to even try this stuff. lol

On NPR this morning they were talking about these guys, they are mostly former fishermen. They said that the women won't even look at them any more unless they are pirates with pockets full of money.
So...it's the women's fault that their men are not pirates.

Some people say there's a woman to blame
but I know
It's my own damn fault.

ff for Danni!

I would like to know how these pirates get on board of these ships? They are in small boats and have to scale a ship that may be 20-30 feet tall at the lower deck. Do they ask "Pretty Please" or what?

1 or 2 snipers or 50 cal. guns would take care of this.

Grappling hooks and the ships are riding very low in the water when full of oil. They talked about that on the NPR show I listened to.

"but you have to give these faux pirates credit for having the cajones to even try this stuff. lol"

Sorry to be the spelling police, but it's "cojones", not "cajones." Cajones is plural of cajon, which means drawer (furniture) or crate, chest. Well, if they are pirates, I suppose they have chests, lol!

Hey, is this the test that Joe Biden was refering to when he said Obama would be tested? He is not even yet in office. Can't these guys wait a couple of months?

How much are the pirates gonna charge per barrel? Just asking.

Hey issue me a letter of marque and I'll go after them. Sounds like a good retirement gig.

So what are they threatening to do? Sink it? Sneak it into a port?
It's a thousand feet long! Where you gonna hide a thousand foot ship?

They ask for, and usually get, a ransom paid by the country who's flag the ship flies under.

Danni,
I was in the navy and even riding low it would be extremely hard to board a ship that way. Even in calm waters the distance between the boat and the ship would ebb and crest a few or a dozen feet and that is not even considering the wake of the ship.

I have undertaken many refuelings and ship to ship transfers at sea and it ain't easy. Me and four other guys with charged fire hoses and m60 rifles could make it impossible for those guys to get on board. Something is not right with this.

"So what are they threatening to do?"

I think they threaten to murder the crew. The ship is anchored in plain sight but they have hostages.

PROLIX247 I don't know, just repeating what I heard on NPR. Also, there was some confusion as to whether or not the ship was armed.

I see... so they ask for a ransom and safe passage to the country of their choice, and once their feet hit the soil in Kenya, a snipers .223 greets them in the temple from a far off hilltop?

I still don't understand how they plan to get away with this.

Stories like this are what keep me coming back to here. I'd give the whole board FFs if Zarcade weren't so stingy on our per diem allotment.

Red and ignoramos, you're flagged.

I realize that, sorry if I came on too strong. I just cannot get my mind around this. I think the Saudi's are doing this on purpose so they can justify raises the price of crude in a down market.

By the way, all ocean going ships carry weapons, just in case the crew gets crazy. The officer core might not talk about it but they are there.

One day these pirates will go too far -

Like picking on a Princess cruise full of NRA members.

"As the S.S. Swiss Cheese sank slowly into the Mediterranean, its Somali pirate crew perforated beyond recognition, the world gave a happy sigh of relief, knowing that the seas were once again safe, and that the planet's real pirates - American C.E.O.s - had been restored to their rightful place."

I wonder what the job application to become a pirate looks like?

1. Do you like to rape?

2. Do you own an eyepatch?

3. Do you like to pillage?

YOUR HIRED!

A Pirate Looks at Forty

Yes, I am a pirate, two hundred years too late
The cannons don't thunder, theres nothin' to plunder
Im an over-forty victim of fate
Arriving too late, arriving too late

But I've done a bit of smugglin', I've run my share of grass
Made enough money to buy Miami, but I pissed it away so fast
Never meant to last, never meant to last

Jimmy Buffet

Yarrrr..

Something is not right with this.

What do you expect from a country where the guys wear gowns?

Something is not right with this.

They usually have automatic weapons and RPGs. Most of their victims are unarmed.
The crew knows they'll be ransomed at some point, which is better than sitting in a 100 million dollar bbq. Most crews are third worlders themselves, with zero allegiance to either the ship or the country it is flagged in.

I am not buying this load of crap.

I have read on a different site that the Saudi's now want to add a Pirate Premium onto the price of oil to make up for their losses.

Give me a F*#@ken break!!! This is a set-up pure and simple.

Disaster Capitalism in full force.

Prolix,

The ships are usually moored or anchored when hijacked. Sneak on, disarm, hold hostages.

The victims are not all saudis, not always oil.

Hire a bunch of unemployed former Soviet commandos and put them on the boats. After the first encounter, resulting in the ocean full of the dismembered corpses of the pirates, piracy would cease.

This is from Huffpo
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- In a dramatic escalation of high seas crime, Somali pirates hijacked a Saudi supertanker loaded with crude hundreds of miles off the coast of East Africa -- defeating the security web of warships trying to protect vital shipping lanes.

If this has been happening as stated why is the ship not protecting itself?

What kind of Security Web would allow this to happen?

When I was in the Navy they used to send us out in the Caribbean to scout out tiny 25' sailboats loaded with Haitians to keep them from grounding in Miami and we found them easily. There is no reason for this to be happening.

Can somebody please explain to me how these primitive, savage, african beasts with monkey sized pea brain intellect are allowed to get away with these barbaric actions?

Spud seconds that FF and also offers up a free Margarita!

When Spud first heard abouth this story the first thing that came to mind was the old Frederick Forsyth novel The Devil's Alternative

Basically, a super-tanker is hijacked by disgruntled Ukrainian terrorist types who threaten to release all the crude into the English Channel causing wide spread ecological devestation unless their cohorts are released from a Soviet Prison and sent to Israel.

Is a good one if you've never read it.

These dread Pirate robbers from Somalia are a less savvy breed of cat by Spud's reckoning but with balls as big as the great outdoors.

These are the same asswipes who've been increasingly taking down Cruiseships and the like and who recently hijacked a cargo ship replete with Russian tanks on it's way to one African port of call.

/but with paperwork fer another as Spud understands it.

That didn't end particularily well fer the pirates and neither will this one.

America has fairly recently installed a new Military Command specifically designed to deal with Africa. So far AfriCom has been largely unresponsive to these blatent acts of piracy.

Ya'd think after the whole "Blackhawk Down" thing in Mogadishu there would be some incentive to regain a little lost pride but so far bupkas.

Wonder wot's up with that.

Be Well.

/Just heard Obama picked a new AG.
//Hmmm, got some googling to do.

These ships need Ship Marshalls.

If any oil is lost --like the Valdez--you can bet there will be plenty of dead Somali pirates laying on the beaches.

that's why I said "shut up".

it's called freedom of speech.

To paraphrase Mark Twain, telling a woman to shut up and getting her to shut up are two entirely different things.

is it possible that they had confederates aboard the vessel, who dropped them a line. Either the CNO or the Chairman of the JCS was commenting on their efficiency, and noted the distance the ship was out at sea.

These pirates need to have complicit accomplices in official positions. During the Islamist period, piracy stopped as the pirates were subject to consequences in the form of sharia law, a limb or head lopped off, and "justice" was swift and without lengthy appeals. Justice should be attuned to local customs, which serve as a deterrent to locals.

Quite possibly the pirates could be traced, and their villages and associates benefiting from the activity, eliminated. Swift retribution would provide an incentive to refrain from such endeavors.

But the West is uwilling to take actions necessary to stop such intrusion. The suggestions to date have included rerouting ships, and having the ships travel in convoys.

It seems that pirate vessels traveling on the open sea would be quite vulnerable to being monitored and traced by both electronic monitoring and observation.

Did somebody say free margaritas?????

pirate vessels traveling on the open sea would be quite vulnerable

Probably indistinguishable from fishing vessels. Plenty of them in the sea lanes near ports. But I doubt they need any help from the crew. Surround the ship with a few boats and guys waving RPGs and the Captain would be a fool to resist.

The Canadian Navy is on its way . . . or not. The last time I checked, these acts of piracy are occuring off the Somali coast (450 nm out)in international waters. The same people who complain about American interventionist policies are the same people who fault us for not taking the initiative to combat this situation. Don't worry, Admiral Barry is on his way and he will solve everybody's problems.

"India sinks Somali pirate ship"

news.bbc.co.uk

There, pirates. You've been warned.

When it demanded the vessel stop for investigation, the pirate ship responded by threatening to "blow up the naval warship if it closed on her", the statement said.

The pirates definitely have more balls than brains.

The Indian Navy crew must have gotten a laugh out of this threat.

With RPG's?
LOL

What morons! They went up against a frigate? I understand they sunk the "mother ship", pretty sure that means the speedboat boys must be thinking life sucks. If the Indians didn't
kill them.

These pirating acts have been occuring from 30 miles offshore on out. They are now operating in the alternative shipping lanes designed to take them far off the Somali coast, avoiding the Gulf of Aden, and around the Horn (arrgh, shiver me timbers).

Maybe its time to float a few Q ships in to bait them and kill them. Dead men tell no tales. And pirate no more ships.

Wow. Did anyone see all the messages that got yanked form this thread?

I mean, you'd think Johnson couldn't take it anymore and made a throwaway identity to let it all out or something.
