If my respect for those representing the state could be measured numerically, I think Corzine's would be somewhere in the vicinity of negative infinity. Lautenberg and Menendez aren't much better off, and I'm not a huge fan of the only congressman (Rush Holt) that I know of either.

I was the exact same way in the service. Whenever our ship made a port of call in a foreign country, most of the crew would search out the nearest McDonalds. I would find the local restaurants. You are right, it doesn't kill you.

My dad has traveled around the world with his business for almost 50 years. He told me that he got the bug the first time or two he ate the local food, but he said he is now immune to it. He said it has been decades since he has had gastro-intestional problems from eating local foods. And his business takes him to bizarre places like Azerbijian, Turkeministan, Uzbekistan, Iran, etc. where you may actually see your meal being slaughtered!

Not true at all, the reason they are struggling is piss poor managment, terrible foresight in innovative product line, and shitty sales. If these idiots in control would have stopped churning out gas guzzlers that cost to much then they could compete with the other car makers that are doing well(exclude toyota). Secondly they have the worst energy procuremnt strategy I have ever seen. I have witnessed firsthand the hedge practices of the automotive industry and it's horrible. Lastly, they only in the last couple of years have tried to provide the same quality service and upkeep the other guys have been doing for decades.

So the fact that many large companies left Michigan had absolutely nothing to do with the state government hiking taxes a lot higher? It's part of the same problem. Michigan felt that nobody would leave their state because they raised taxes. They gambled and lost. Once several of the businesses left, it had a snowball effect in the local economy.

I'm sure your correct in that they aren't making the cars that people want with the energy savings that people wanted. The big 3 gambled and lost when they were trying to figure out what the public wanted. I get that. However, that doesn't mean that the fact the UAW and the state government bilked them out of money didn't contribute to their financial problems.

Either way, you can't sell me on this is the right thing to do. If you give big auto money then next is big insurance, then big resturant chains, after that why not bail out barney's 5 and dime? Where does it stop?

I sort of agree, but if you live in a ranching town and are a fifth generation descendant of real cowboys, even the diner cook and local butcher are going to be wearing cowboy hats and boots.

But as for these rubes who saunter into town from New Jersey with their spotless tight fitting Wranglers and $400 Stetson trying to 'fit in'. . . . that's another story.

I agree with you Goatman. I grew up wearing cowboy boots as I lived on a farm up until I was 10. Even though I don't live on a farm anymore but I still wear boots.

Yum! I also had my share of the monkey meat on a stick and hot pan de sol from the street corner vendors in subic. Love the ponsit (sp?) as well. Though I am an adventuresome eater, I could not bring myself to try the baloot. I still hear the early morning vendors calling out, "balloooooot!"

I didn't say it was sole reason, but I do think it's largest contributing factor since for the auto industry enrgy demand is their highest cost component.

If you look back at your post you said the reason was UAW and Democrats.....

I said it was their management that killed them. Piss poor decision from top to bottom on everything from energy procuremnet to lugnutz!!

I missed you posting this. Originally from Kansas, moved to Texas after college, hated so I moved to California. I loved and would still be there if my father had not gotten ill, and my cousin was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer(both live(d) here as my cousin is now dead). I moved back here to assist in his care and to help run his business till he gets back on his feet(which wil hopefully be soon)!! Fortunately my trading job allows me to work from anywhere as long as I have the net. I also wanted to spend some time with my cousin b4 she passed as I cared for her deeply.....(amazing young woman....I still miss you everyday Lisa)!!

So soon, I will be outta this state again and it will be back to Cali, or maybe Jackson Hole, not 100% sure yet.
