Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

If military veterans applying for benefits either haven't gotten a reply from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or received a different response than expected, it could mean that evidence for their claim file wound up in the shredder. A nationwide review of the VA's 57 regional offices has found that 41 had records in their shredder bins that shouldn't have been there. In all, nearly 500 benefit claims records had been erroneously slated for destruction, including claims for compensation, notices of disagreement with a claim decision, and death certificates.

So much for the 'War President's' blah blah blah on how much the Bush Administration values vets.

Michelle Obama has made active and vet family issues one of the primary causes she'll pursue as First Lady.

She's been quietly meeting with military families ever since Barack was elected to the Senate - and all throughout the campaign - listening to their concerns and acting as an advocate.

VA "Shreddergate" - Employees shredded 1000's of claims

That's an absolute disgrace. VA claims can take a long time anyway. How many people waited in vain thinking their claims were being worked on when they had actually been shredded? I'm glad Michele Obama has stated one of her goals as First Lady is to help with military and veteran family issues.

In defense of the VA, though, I had to call the VA last month regarding some personal issues and they were terrific. The woman, Rose, at the VA in Virginia worked with me on getting the necessary paperwork filed and even called me personally at home to ask a couple additional questions in order to get things taken care of quickly and couldn't have been more helpful. The VA also provided medical help for the two years before my Dad died back in the 1990's, so I have nothing but good things to say about the VA. The VA was a Godsend to my family.

That is ridiculous Unity, give the Bush hate a break, I have been screwed around by VA as much as anyone ever has, under Clinton and both Bush's.

Every once in awhile someone will print a story about the problems with the VA and blame Bush, it's assinine and ignorant. VA's problems have nothing to do with the President.

Maybe you just didn't know that, now you do. The VA has problems, and most if not all are the VA's fault.

BTW, my medical records got tossed after Desert Storm, 17 years later and still no record showing I almost lost my leg. (even though I have sworn affadavits from the surgeons) And no, I don't blame Bush the elder or Clinton.

Bush cuts funding to the VA at a time they were flooded with both injured Iraq vets and a surge in older vets in failing health.

A. Who cut funding when it needed to be increased?
B. Who started the war that caused overcrowding and stretched the VA to the breaking point?

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration's budget assumes cuts to funding for veterans' health care two years from now even as badly wounded troops returning from Iraq could overwhelm the system.

www.msnbc.msn.com

WASHINGTON -- At least tens of thousands of veterans with non-critical medical issues could suffer delayed care or even be denied care in coming years to enable President Bush to meet his promise of cutting the deficit in half.

"records had been erroneously slated for destruction"

Whatever do you expect from government employees? Certainly not job performance or accountability. But...I am sure they will shape up...come January.
Ahhhhhhhhhhh....nirvana!!

then they blend the shredded paper with shredded linen and viola, they print more money on the special paper.

You're not even reading what I type Unity.

During the 1st Bush adminstration, (end of Reagan) the military complex was bloated beyond all belief and 10's of 1000's of records got destroyed in the same way as this.

I heard a story that my records were part of a group of medical records which were stuffed into ceilings and then dumped in the garbage.

And at that time more money was pouring into the VA then at any time in US history.

Do a little crital thinking before blaming someone for something. Ask someone who might know something about the situation.

Thank you for your service. I hope you got your records straightened out with the VA. No one who's served deserves anything but great treatment.

One would have hoped they'd have done better 25 years on. Especially in light of the massive increase in Iraq and other vets needing care, not cut the budget and shred records. I lost a family member because someone who shouldn't have threw away her file a few times to keep the work load down. It's a touchy subject with me.

Sorry I just responded. I posted last on this thread when I woke up in the middle of the night.

Have yourself a good one. BTW the music thread is fun.

Unity, it just irritates me when someone trys to blame the president (whomever that is) for VA workers who could give a shit and do shoddy work.

My medical records are gone forever, and it makes thing difficult. And I know I am one of 1000's.

The President does not process medical claims at VA.

I have a ton of stories I can tell you about how corrupt the process is, there are many great people that work for VA and deserve praise, but far too many are just cashing a pay check.

I know my issues with VA will continue, but I won't blame Hussein or anyone else.

And I know the vast majority of VA workers try their best.

The VA is a cluster-fuck.

It's government run and has no accountability.
It's a snapshot of things to come (natinalized medicine).

Thanks a pantload.

Republicans are pro-america. They support the troops...

R ZEIT - I've been in the guard for 5 years and of course I have had a bad experience with the VA and TRICARE, its just expected. And I agree, it is not the president's fault.

It is the fault of government employees, who know they won't get fired. Government was the only sector that actually hired more people last quarter.

Also, the link below is a story on a study run by a Republican Senators office about unexcused absences in government positions. "Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., released a report Thursday showing that the number of hours that agencies reported their employees were absent from work without taking leave increased from approximately 2.5 million hours per year in 2001 to 3.5 million hours in 2007."

Also:

"The Veterans Affairs and the Treasury departments accounted for more than 60 percent of all AWOL hours between 2001 and 2007."

Unexcused employee absences on the rise, senator says

Blame lazy government workers, not the executive branch.

You are right about that Andy.

When I first went to VA I had a guy tell me to limp and 'pretend' my knees were fucked up, he told me he had worked it up to 100 percent disabiilty and was also making 60 k a year in his job with VA and if I just followed his lead he could help me fake it like him.

I told him my knees were really messed up and he looked at me like I was an alien.

The VA is not as well run as it should be and thus accusations about government employees are posted yet any fair person knows that private health insurance companies screw people out of benefits every single day. For profit health care isn't exactly motivated to be fair or compassionate. For profit health care requires our country to pay twice what other countries pay for health care and we get fewer benefits and millions aren't covered at all. The Bush administration has been famous for appointments of incompetent cronies and I suspect that more competent management people will be appointed by Obama who will then try to fix some of the messes at the VA left by the Bush appointees.
The same will be true in most other departments throughout the government.

You lefties want to blame Bush, well you got 70 days left of that. Having worked in the fedeal governement for 8 years and finally got so tired of watching the colossal daily struggle to achieve mediocrity. I left to work in the real world

Federa Employees at every level are LAZY, Whiny, Union beholdant, Only interested in getting through the day with doing as little as possible. Especially with a republican admin. they are mostly extremely liberal and hate republicans, and that is the excuse they use to do as little as possible. I worked at the State Department on D and 23rd. And yet with unemployment skyrocketing, the only sector hiring is the federal governewment. And what will they be doing for us..NOTHING

So think about that, I always called federal jobs simply a "Welfare rogram" This happens everywhere, Federal Employess don't care about you. Why do you think real estate is so expensive around DC, Because Builders and realtors know, the Fedc will pay extremely high sa;laries for the most menial of tasks. And you cannot be fired.

You lefties want to blame Bush, well you got 70 days left of that.

Are you kidding? Reagan gets blamed every day here for something. To be fair, so does Carter, LBJ, Nixon etc.....

"You lefties want to blame Bush, well you got 70 days left of that."

Au contrarie, Billy. Bush labored eight looong years to get this country as fucked up as it is right now. He earned, deserves, and will continue to receive the blame wherever and whenever it is due. Slinking off to that former hog farm in Crawford does not earn Shrub a "pass."

Hell's bells, boy, the GOPiggies have been whining for a decade because Bill Clinton lied about blowjobs.

There's a difference between whining and the legitimate assignment of blame. You guys and gals will not be able to launch attacks on Obama because he doesn't clean up Bush's messes fast enough without being laughed out of the room.

But, please, go ahead, give it a go. You'll find out in 2010 that 2008 was just a taste of what constitutes a really good lickin'.

Hell's bells, boy, the GOPiggies have been whining for a decade because Bill Clinton lied about blowjobs.

Clinton's blowjob gets mentioned on this blog by the LEFT by a factor of 1,000 to 1.

The whining is all on the left.

I can hardly wait for my "lickin".

Deluded?

How so?

Are you actually that much of a right wing partisan chump that you think either line even vaguely accurate?

"You lefties want to blame Bush, well you got 70 days left of that."

Yeah cuz the right never tried to blame Clinton for just about everything during Bush's presidency.

Zap,

I only see the Clinton BJ mentioned by lefties who try to minimize his impeachment.

I also think his impeachment was stupid but my point stands that the left, virtually exclusively, mentions Clinton's BJ.

I know it it ain't easy but try reading BL2.

Typical government.

I'll gladly concede that one Zap.

If anyone of those veterans have died waiting for an answer on their claims, that VSO who shredded the claims should be brought on on charges for, at least, MANSLAUGHTER!
