Jeff Katz: There are far more women seeking to adopt children than there are children awaiting adoption. So why aren't the laws of supply and demand working in U.S. adoptions?

WTF over. Have you ever priced out what it costs to adopt a baby from overseas? Looks to me like it's working.

Some of it has to do with kids that have special needs(medical problems). Also a lot of people looking to adopt aren't really honest(want the 'perfect kid')

I find the whole thing embarassing really. Richest country in history can't seem to find parents for these kids, but we have all the time in the world to bomb the fuck out of some desert...

Sick priorities.

The problem wouldn't be as severe is abortions were more frequent. I would suggest that the religionists who are against abortion raise these kids, but then again, they would grow up to be religionists, the last thing we need.

Adoption is not easy. The laws in the US are very stringent and in some states and it seems like they are geared toward preventing adoption. My wife and I had a failed adoption (what they call "a paperwork miscarriage") and it took us three years and 45K to adopt our daughter. She only came from 35 miles away in Michigan. We found out that part of the problem is that white perspective parents want perfect little white babies and black perspective parents want perfect little black babies. That was one of the reasons we chose to adopt a biracial child, it seems they are very hard to place. I can't imagine why, my daughter is gorgeous and smart and a wonderful child. She's the light of our eyes and spreads joy everywhere she goes.

BoyracerX

What a wonderful thing you and your wife did when you adopted your biracial daughter. I think the joy she'll bring you will be worth 1000 times over the trouble you went through for those 3 years it took to complete the adoption. All the best to you and your family.

Sadly, the gap between supply and demand in adoption isn't surprising. The Listening to Parents project, which I founded, has studied the experience of people adopting children from foster care since 2002. We have found that for every 1,000 people who call a public child welfare agency seeking to adopt, only 36 do so. Far too many parents we have interviewed describe the agencies they dealt with as bureaucratic and unwelcoming. Far too many agencies view their primary response in adoption as screening out "bad" parents rather than recruiting good ones.

So true and it's not just the agencies you have to deal with but the court system too. I have been trying to legaly adopt for the past two years all the while I had custody of him and yet I can't seem to work through all the court systems. Not to mention the cost which is just getting flat silly. Here I am already raising a kid keeping him off welfare rolls and out of foster homes and they want me to pay some shyster to work the retarted system just for the privilage of doing what I'm already doing.

I can't belive that the system is so screwed up.

BoyracerX,

Good show glad to see others steping up. My son is biracial also but latino/white. He is cute and adorable and a load of fun. We'll keep fighting the good fight and hopefuly be done soon.

"I think the joy she'll bring you will be worth 1000 times over the trouble you went through for those 3 years it took to complete the adoption."

Thank you and yes I knew that the moment I held her when she was twenty minutes old and I looked into her eyes for the first time. The stars aligned just for a moment and we found each other in the universe, it was meant to be.

"The latest study, released in August, found that nearly 600,000 women are seeking to adopt children they do not know."

I would hope that Mr. Katz meant couples when he referred to "women" cause I can tell you from personal experience that raising a child as a single parent that it's hard enough juggling work and childcare for your own child let alone an adoptive kid.

Couples who want to adopt need to stop looking for the "perfect child" and agencies involved need to stop looking for the "perfect parents" cause there's no such thing in either case. But don't take that to mean that it's not worth it cause the vast majority of the time the joys of raising a child far outweigh the occasional frustrations.

The problem wouldn't be as severe is abortions were more frequent. I would suggest that the religionists who are against abortion raise these kids, but then again, they would grow up to be religionists, the last thing we need.

That really is the problem. The same jesus freak cocksuckers who supposedly are pro-life, would rather pay to bomb the fuck out of some people in the desert, than personally bother to take care of a kid.

Sick fucking priorities...

I'm not religious in the slightest but I'd rather have some "jesus freaks" raising these kids than some of the quixotic libs who post on the DR.

" .... some of the quixotic libs who post on the DR."

LIberals hate wind turbines, it blocks the nice view.

This is the point though. Either adopt the kids that your anti-choice policy causes, or shut the fuck up.

No Shawn the odds are that the biological parents of these kids are responsible for their existence due to their wanton sexual behavior and/or neglect in using birth control.

Unless by "your anti-choice policy" you're referring to me then I have to thank you for pointing out that I'm antiabortion cause I didn't realize I was since the last time I checked I wasn't

Keep throwing the "F" around Shawn cause that's sure to help you win arguments in your middle school since it shows how well thought out and grownup your logic is.

Abstinence only! Working great!

My statement stands.

Secondly Scotch: Go fuck yourself. I'm done with you.

Have fun in middle school Monday Shawn and for the sake of the world please have yourself neutered before you hit puberty.

Not sure, but I think most people want infants. Older kids, special needs, bi-or different-race kids seem hard to place. Kids are such hostages to fortune.

My husband and I would love to rear a young
child, but the agencies in charge think otherwise.

Homophobism be damned!

Be Well.

Yup skip.

Congratulations on being born with a genetic difference that rates you on the same level(in the eyes of the right) with murders, rapists, and drug users...

Sick fucking priorities.

Do you e-mail your significant other with those fingers Shawn?

Does this philosophy of "if you endorse it, do it yourself" apply to everyone, shawn, or just those who disagree with you? Because if it applies to everyone, then the liberals who want to raise taxes should start volunteering more of their paychecks to the government. If they want more distribution of wealth, they should start by giving their own money away to those poorer than themselves.

Do you do this, shawn? Or does the "if you endorse it, do it yourself" policy that you expect of others not apply to you?

Ah another massochist reichwing nutjob enters the fray.

Just plain dead wrong. The system is tilted already toward the few over the many. Which should be obvious to a child with basic math skills. Thus the idea that 1000 people shouldn't own the whole fucking planet isn't revolutionary unless you believe in divine right or somesuch bullshit.

I do however believe that if you vote for a war, you should at least have the balls to fight it, eh armchair samurai cocksucker?

Just plain dead wrong.

Ahh -- the old "but this is different" argument. I expected it. What's good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander IOW.

I'm against the war, so I'm not sure who your child-like insult armchair samurai cocksucker is aimed at, but I'll consider the source.

Anyway, so you are saying that unless a person who is between 18 and 36 years old and able bodied, (you can't enlist to fight a war otherwise) they are not allowed to vote for war? 40 YOs and the blind don't get to make that choice?

How very inclusive of you. I guess that unless you are not over 65, you should not be able to vote for matters pertaining to social security, either, huh?

(here it comes again -- "But this is different")

BTW, I gave six years of my life in service to my country. How about you?

Keep on throwing those thought provoking epithets out there in the netherworlds of the internet Shawn you're sure to win a lot of arguments (well in your own mind that is).

Ah another massochist reichwing nutjob enters the fray.

LOL. I ask if a policy that you espouse would apply to the other end of the political spectrum and your response is to label me a massochist reichwing nutjob

How does my question elicit such a partisian response? Are you this much of an extremist in real life too? Do you make these kind of bizarre leaps of logic during the normal course of your day? Or do you just play crazy on the blogs?

Goat are you out at sea? Hopefully not close to Cuba where that big storm is at

Yep, Rasta -- I'm on the rig. We just got out of the Pascagoula shipyards to repair damage done from Ike. But we are near the delta and out of harm's way of that hurricane. Thanks for asking.

My parents tried to adopt a 13 year old girl who was featured on the "waiting child" program when I was about 17. They had already raised my sister, brother, and (for the most part) I so they wanted to provide a good home for a teenager in need of some guidance. My folks were professional caregivers (mom was a social worker, dad a minister) and they thought they still had love to give for another child. The state adoption agency decided that my father was too old (over 50) so their application was denied. The end result was a young lady forced upon the world having never known a loving family. Since then, I have done research on the adoption process and realized that in some cases, the children's case workers are not working in the best interest of the child. In fact, they are paid by the number of cases that they handle. The whole process needs an overhaul.

Ahh -- the old "but this is different" argument. I expected it. What's good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander IOW.

Again just plain dead wrong. Your argument is economic statism. i.e. those who have; earned it(reverse of the democrat "fair share" argument). This is essentially akin to the idea that the native americans deserved to be massacred because they didn't have the power to stop it. i.e. might makes right. Or that the jews in nazi germany deserved to die because they lacked the power to stop it.

The system is already rigged against the many. Even a child can reason that if a few own all the stuff, that they can use that against the rest. What is your malfunction moron?

Thing is I don't really think you are a moron. I think you are a national socialist who actually believes what you spew, and that is disgusting. A sad commentary on what remains of the ideal of a "great society" that has clearly failed.

Much better Shawn this shows that you are developing a rudimentary grasp of expressing logical thinking though your analogies are severely strained. I'm giving you a B for style, a C for substance, an A+ for effort and a gold star for lack of profanity.

Someone be kind to the retarded fly and remind IT that I already said that I was done with IT.

"IT" does have a name Shawn. You may call me Mr. Scotch.

Ah. Sadly there are no fly swatters here, so ITs buzzing must simply be ignored...

I notice that you're having a hard time ignoring the "IT" Shawn didn't the Ritalin help? Try doubling the dosage.

Even with all their disgusting habits, there is at least one interesting fact about the housefly.
These busy little insects are quite important in the break down of waste materials since this
is their main diet in all stages of their life.
