Sad to say I experience this on the regular. Some of my friends are very light skinned and they don't realize it when they "innocently" mention how my daughter is darker skinned than theirs. At least she has the "good hair" they tell me... though they always warn me how that can change as she gets older.

again, in my anecdotal experience, I don't think that's exactly right.

I think darker skinned black people don't like anybody else getting away with anything due to their skin color, especially if it's lighter skinned black people, so they hold a little bit of a grudge toward them and they overcompensate for this feeling by highly valuing darkness. Its wrong both ways.

My sister in law even put her baby out in the sun when he was very young because she though he was too light. They laugh about this when they retell the story but I always feel a little uncomfortable hearing it. He eventually darkened up naturally, which makes her very happy.

The foolishness of all this is obvious when you consider that nearly all African American who descended from slaves have some white blood. I read an account of an African American traveling to Africa and noticing that the people there were blacker than any he had ever encountered in the US.

Well, he's ignorant. My daughter is biracial (African and English) and when my wife and I were going through the adoption process we were cautioned (unnecessarily as it happens) that it does not matter if a person is half black and half white or not, to our society they will always be viewed as black by all races. That's not a racist view its simply a fact. In the case of my family our races (I'm British - butt white to the point of being pale blue, my wife is Italian and fairly dark for a Northern Italian, and my daughter is about the same hue as my wife and our new President Elect) have not been a hindrance in any way that matters and as the old saying goes, "your family is what you say it is". That being said though, my daughter is never taken for anything but black, she is an African American in every sense of the word and so is Barack Obama.

I still tear up a little at the thought of what this new presidency means to my little family. We are so happy and so proud this week we could literally burst.

I could be wrong but I recall reading somewhere that if a person has even a small percentage of black ethnicity in their make up then they are to be considered black. In other words if you are one quarter black and one quarter Irish and one quarter caucasian and one quarter Asian,, then you are black.

Different countries and cultures define race differently. In some countries, you don't even have to have any African blood to be "black".

When the US employed slavery/Jim Crow/segratation, Obama would have been "black". The legacy of those practices is that we still use those definitions to define race. When this was a racist country, being biracial made it just as tough to get buy as having two African parents. Young might not know this because he's a Brit but to any American who knows anything about our history, this should be common knowledge.

I want to know about this...Is Obama really our first Arab-American President? Is his father Arab-African? not Negro-African? In Kenya his father declared himself to be Arab-African. In Kenya there are Arab-Africans and Negro-Africans. Negro-Africans generally have Christian names whereas Arab-Africans have Muslim names. So does that mean Obama is 50% Caucasian from his mother's side and 43.75% Arabic, and 6.25% African Negro from his father's side?
Granted the government allows you to choose basically any race you want when participating in the US Census, but colleges require you to be at least 12.5% of the racial component you claim for minority status.
I am not claiming the above is true or false, I'm not saying he is Muslim or radical or anything like that. I am curious, is he our first Arab-American President?

The blackest people in the world are not even African. There are South Pacific islanders who are so incredibly deeply black that they look blue in the slides shown by a missionary priest at my school back years ago. I asked him about it and he said it was not a camera trick. Therefore the color is not the real determining factor in prejudice, it is a cultural thing instead, which has then been reworked and applied based on color.
