Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens was leading challenger Mark Begich with most of the election returns in hand Tuesday night, despite being found guilty of seven felonies and polls showing him in deep trouble.

They do live in the dark mostly, up there. Where they can see Russia..

They think different out there on the front lines with RUSSIA!

Warm up a jail cell for Mr. Stevens! Can we put him in the cell next to former GOP Congressman Duke Cunningham?

congrats rethuglicans, you've just proved exactly what price you place on law and order...

That really scares me that a convicted felon would get anyone's vote.

Just showing their principles of Party over Country or Morality.

Stevens, Jefferson, Murtha. People are stupid.

After the Senate expells Stevens---hard to imagine even the Republicans letting him continue to sit in the chamber---how does it work in Alaska? The governor appoints a successor? Will it be Todd or Sarah?

Doc,

It'll be Trig.

He'd do a better job than all-of-the-above.

"Will it be Todd or Sarah?"

Posted by Doc_Sarvis

Trig would be an improvement.

The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Co-Senators, after all they have children and grandchildren to raise.

Alaska deserves 2 1/2 senators since they are the first line of defense.

"congrats rethuglicans, you've just proved exactly what price you place on law and order..."

After 8 years of the Bush White House I think we already knew what they thought about law and order.

"Alaska deserves 2 1/2 senators since they are the first line of defense."

Good point.
You never know when Putin's going to rear his head.

Doc,
It'll be Trig.

Probably better than at least a quarter of those already sitting in the Senate.
And I mean that in the spirit of bipartisanship, Jeff.

Stevens will win the seat. Naturally he'll be forced out by the Senate, and then the TardMother will fill the vacancy.

Or somesuch. Mark me werds if it izzent so.

MtD

I mean that in the spirit of bipartisanship, Jeff.

Cool.

BTW - that's how I construed it even without the qualifier.

Hey if a bill came before Trig for a vote how will He sign in the affirmative?? Will He arc His peepee in such a way as to "Mark" a vote FOR the bill and will He do a number 2 on said bill if He votes no?? Just curious.

Larry

Hmm tardmother, from the party of compassion. You suck.

Senator Ted Stevens... The Republicans last great white hope to get back at Obama and the Democrats.

Pay no attention that he is now a convicted felon.
A Stevens win to white Republicans will be the same an OJ Simpson aquital was to blacks.

Personally, if I were Reid, I'd wouldn't put up a vote for his expulsion. Let him run his appeals. Let him fester. Let him stink up the joint. The people of Alaska wanted a tainted Senator from the party deeply in the minority? Let them have him, and all the absence of clout he brings.

JMFJ:
they finally let you out of prison! Where you BEEN, man?

Save us from ourselves, give us term limits.

Like most rednecks, they would rather vote for a crook than a Democrat.

I agree, Palin (sarah, not todd or trig) will end up holding that seat. She will only marginally be less corrupt than stevens.

Alaska oil is drying up, so the gifts will not be as forthcoming as they were (until they open up anwr).

and I TOLD you here that I thought he would win after listening to the debate on cspan

its their state and they can elect whoever they want

you dont seem to hold illinois with the same low regard because they sent back a man to the senate who called our soldiers nazis and all that bullshit from turbin durbin .

but he should resign now because I believe in the rule of law......he should resign IF The appeals dont work because remember that even the judge in the case jumped all over the prosecutors

but I am sure that justice is the LAST thing that you liberal anarchists care about for him anyway.....

Palin will take the seat, and will be Senator for the next 36 years. Mega-sigh.

For now, though, that looks pretty dumb. Ever stop and think of why places like the Dakotas and Iowa elect Democratic Senators, particularly when the Dems control the Senate? Pork. Ethanol-flavored pork.

Alaska, "America's Welfare State", shot itself in the foot with this one. They'll have two unrespected junior Senators in the deeply minority party. Good going, there.

Over/under on Stevens' pardon chances before Bush leaves office?

but I am sure that justice is the LAST thing that you liberal anarchists care about for him anyway.....

bushblower-you get dumber with every post.
Are you O.D.ing on stupid pills today?

and thats USUALLY the only way to make an arguement is to insult my intelligence........so thanks for coming with the usual liberal fuck nonsense...........

I repeat........this man getting justice is the LAST thing that liberals are interested in.
you dont even want to DISCUSS the idea that maybe the prosecutors made mistakes of the sort that would free a cop killer and you would be in favor of that but not here............thats my point

AND AS I SAID...........he has to resign in my mind because I believe in the rule of law but that doesnt mean that the people of alaska are stupid or whatever your side will come up with

it was a way to keep a republican in that seat, so its not that bad of an idea

remember the fiasco in new jersey with the gangsters there..........THAT seemed to be okay with the dems.....but this isnt?????

typical

I guess you are right seeing as how all those "racists rednecks" in Pennsylvania re-elected John Murtha.

I thought crook was required a preresiquite to get on the ballot of either of the two major parties.

By definition a state can't have two junior Senators
think a little bit.

Alaska is the new Louisiana!

BWA HAH HAH HAH HAH!

Jefferson only had a few bucks inside his fridge in his house.

Ted "Giftmeister" Stevens had a whole fucking house fulla stuff that were bribes prolly including his fridge.

If there is one negative thing that Spud liked about yesterdays result it's the fact that now Spud can gleefully rip into folk from the ignorant, racist places like Alaska and Texas etc w/o a shred of feeling bad about it.

Hear that Goat and BLT et al?

Spud's talking to YOU, ya assclowns!

Forewarned.
Forearmed.

Be Well.

Alaska?

Highest reported rape rate in the US.

Highest alcohol and drug addiction rates in the US.

Voted fer Scary Failin fer Governor.

Now, they continue to vote fer an indicted crazy ole coot like Ted Steven?

Okay Alaska we get it... YER MORONS.

No more clues, please!

Be Well.

I guess you are right seeing as how all those "racists rednecks" in Pennsylvania re-elected John Murtha.

Remind us again what Murtha was convicted for?

"By definition a state can't have two junior Senators
think a little bit."

I believe he was referring to their standing and influence in the US Senate.

Correct. Lower-case junior in ranking and clout in the senate, not the honorific title "Junior Senator".

I guess you are right seeing as how all those "racists rednecks" in Pennsylvania re-elected John Murtha.

I was referring more to Murtha's "racists rednecks" comments. Apparently they like democrats to.

Oh but voting for stubbs is okay, you democrats are nuts.

She may fill it with herself, just like Blajokeovich.

Murtha was the unindicted co-conspriator of ABSCAM.

He is on tape saying he would think about taking a bribe for return of favors.

So thought are an automatic declaraion of a crime?? Unbelievable.

Larry

thoughts^

"Murtha was the unindicted co-conspriator of ABSCAM."

So, whether or not you like him or his politics he was not charged with, indicted for, nor convicted of a crime. So comparing him with Stevens is feeble, at best.

Oh but voting for stubbs is okay, you democrats are nuts.

Who is "stubbs"?

As for Stevens--he ran this two minute ad the night before the election--

www.youtube.com

Appears it worked to some degree since he will likely win the senate seat back.

Now when he loses his appeal--likley to happen--Palin gets to appoint someone to replace him.

She won't appoint herself--being Governor provides better experience for her when she runs in 2012.

52% of Americans voted for Obama and they voted for socialism--whether they know it or not. Likely 30%-40% know they are voting for the road to socialism.

The country will reject his ideas and policies when they see it on the streets as disasterous.

Obama and the Dems are in charge and they will over reach--it is their nature. Raising taxes --spending more than the Repubs could ever spend, Fairness Doctrine to impede free speech. Schumer compares political speech that he disagrees with as pornography--that is coming our way.

Congratulations to Obama for being the first person of color to be elected POTUS--now maybe folks will stop with the bigoted racists comments against fellow Americans as a country. That monkey is finally off our backs. Not that we don't stay vigilant when laws are broken, but this country can longer be called racist.

Alaskans apparently don't care if their leaders are ripping them off... as long as they get that check every year from the oil companies.

"Socialism" at it's finest!

you democrats are nuts.

#35 | Posted by JMFJ at 2008-11-05 01:11 PM

I think we now know who the fucking nuts are in this country...

"52% of Americans voted for Obama and they voted for socialism--whether they know it or not. Likely 30%-40% know they are voting for the road to socialism."

Yes dear, you are just sooo much smarter than the rest of us.

And the right has been using the "socialism" red herring for a whole lot longer than you've even been around.

No sale. But those grapes are actually pretty darn sweet.

"being Governor provides better experience for her when she runs in 2012."

please! please! please! Let Scary Falin run for President 2012!

San--Murtha was the "unindicted"...I didn't say he was convicted of anything.

He is a baffoon all the same.

Apparently though his constituents don't mind being called racists and then rednecks by their House representative.

Not to mention his defamation of our troops.

His time will come to be ousted and it will be brighter day.

I think Stubbs is the guy who had a gay prostitute in the basement---No--that was Barney Fife...

Stubbs ---

Gerry Eastman Studds (May 12, 1937 October 14, 2006) (pronounced /ˈɡɛri/) was an American Democratic Congressman from Massachusetts who served from 1973 until 1997. He was the first openly gay national politician in the U.S. In 1983 he was censured by the House of Representatives after he admitted to having had an affair with a 17-year-old page in 1973.

en.wikipedia.org

That Stubbs--

"Now when he loses his appeal--likley to happen--Palin gets to appoint someone to replace him.

She won't appoint herself--being Governor provides better experience for her when she runs in 2012."

Baloney. She would appoint herself in a second. A term in the Senate is vastly superior to a Governor of a patch of frozen dirt. And besides, she obviously would like to get out of Alaska and join the conservative cocktail circuit in the beltway and show off her new upscale wardrobe.

She'll probably tell the first dude to stay home, so she can more easily meet conservative power brokers wearing nothing but a towel.

Hahahahaha. It will only get worse for you, Murphy. The demographic changes that turned southwest red states blue will continue. California will be glad to send a million blue voters to Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, and Arizona. We've got millions to spare. Hahahahahahaha. Looooooooser!

"Gerry Eastman Studds (May 12, 1937 October 14, 2006) (pronounced /ˈɡɛri/) was an American Democratic Congressman from Massachusetts who served from 1973 until 1997."

That is my point. For some reason JMFJ thought reaching back 25 years to a Congressman who was censured (not charged with, or convicted of a crime) was a valid comparison/justification for re-electing Ted Stevens.

California is so diverse--it's hard to say what we are.

Obama won the election and I guess on his personality. It wasn't on his ideas. It was on change for the country--no different than when Clinton won in 1992--all change.

And no one knows how this guy will govern.

He has never reached across the aisle and is further left than people in his own party.

He will have the left jumping down his throat--do this--do that! NYT already has their list for him to do right now--raise taxes, leave Iraq, close Gitmo, etc. Schumer will lead the parade to squash free political speech on talk radio and the unions will want their payback with no secret ballots measure passed.

So when the euphoria wears off and people see this guy without the mask--it is you and those who voted for him that will be the losers.

San--I am with you on this issue--Ted was convicted and should have stepped aside.

He believes himself to be innocent and wants or is appealing his conviction. If or when he loses that appeal--he will have to step aside.

Now for Stubbs--he got a standing ovation from the house later after only a slap on the wrist for his admission. He should have been kicked out like they did to Foley--who did stupid phone calls to pages. A sexual preditor is a sexual preditor--they could at least treat them the same--no matter which party they come from.

It's like Jefferson on the frozen cash--he should step aside--but he too believes himself to be innocent and being prosecuted because he is black--not because he had 90k in the freezer.

And look how long this is taking for his case to be heard! And he won't leave after his conviction either--he will appeal and take another 2 years.

Ted may not even be censored while he waits for his appeal. The list was long of Senators and Congress people--and Colin Powell who testified on his behalf at the trial.

Maybe Ted is being railroaded--that's why we have a judicial system to move a case through.

All the corrupt aholes in congress need the boot. I don't care what party affiliation they belong to.

"Obama won the election and I guess on his personality. It wasn't on his ideas. It was on change for the country--no different than when Clinton won in 1992--all change. "

You're full of shit, Murphy. California has voted blue ever since 1992. That's because it's a liberal state, loser.

JFMJ, Nullifidaian, et al:

She does not get to appoint the replacement. Alaska changed policy after Murkowski appointed his daughter to the Senate. There will be a special election. Palin may run for it, and would probably win (considering the brilliance heretofore shown by the voters of Alaska).

" Palin may run for it,"

I betcha she does. Now that she's seen the bright lights, why would she want to continue to govern a patch of frozen dirt?

p.s. Thanks for the clarification, Lawnchair.

"it's a liberal state"

Yeah - how liberal of you guys to deny equal rights to gay people. Very progressive state you have over there.

So when the euphoria wears off and people see this guy without the mask--it is you and those who voted for him that will be the losers.

#53 | Posted by MURPHY at 2008-11-05 02:11 PM

Today it is obvious you don't have clue what you are talking about. You are a sad sack and I recommend you and takeitsleazy get on down and get your Prozac prescriptions filled ASAP.

It is going to be a long 8 years for you and your kind.

"Yeah - how liberal of you guys to deny equal rights to gay people. Very progressive state you have over there."

We still have a few rightwing retards here.

A few? More like millions. Guess California isn't as liberal a state as you like to think.

Obama won the election and I guess on his personality. It wasn't on his ideas. It was on change for the country--no different than when Clinton won in 1992--all change.

#53 | Posted by MURPHY

Yeah, and look what a "terrible" eight years we had under Clinton...

"Like most rednecks, they would rather vote for a crook than a Democrat."

Those are the two major parties, aren't they: Crooks and Democrats? herm

Marion Barry voters meet Ted Stevens voters

All the republicans who made racist remarks about Marion Barry voters owe them an apology or they owe the Alaskans who voted for Stevens an insult.

Frozen Crackers?

There was a Tennessee governor (long before my time) who won reelection while in prison.

We know at least 50% of folks up in Alaska are out of their minds.

They say Palin has an 80% approval rate in Alaska, so we already know that state is a little...different. You know, like the shorter bus is different from the others. It kind of makes you wonder why more people from the lower 48 don't support their first dude and his secessionist group.

After the Senate expells Stevens---hard to imagine even the Republicans letting him continue to sit in the chamber---how does it work in Alaska? The governor appoints a successor? Will it be Todd or Sarah?

I heard one of the newscasters state that if the Senate votes to expel Stevens, there will have to be another election. There are probably some timing issues to be considered i.e being expelled prior to the start of his new term may be different than being expelled after the start of his new term. It would seem to me that if he were expelled (or resigned) after the start of the new term, Palin would get to choose his successor. That may not be the case if expelled prior to the start of a new term.

Also, no more can the residents of D.C. be derided for relecting mayor Marion Barry unless the residents of Alaska are also derided for relecting Ted Stevens. Both were reprehensible acts.

FEDUP -

Your post caused me to do some digging. The result
(from
www.senate.gov):

Vacancies in Congress occur due to the death, resignation, or declination (refusal
to serve) of a Senator or Representative, or as the result of expulsion or exclusion by
either house. The Constitution requires that vacancies in both houses be filled by special
election, but in the case of the Senate, it empowers state legislatures to provide for
temporary appointments by the state governor until special elections can be scheduled.

As for Alaska:

"Alaska, Arizona, and Hawaii require the governor to fill Senate vacancies with a person affiliated
with the same political party as the previous incumbent."

This is followed by reference to Alaska Stat. 15.40.010 (2001).

So, the Governor of Alaska---whatshername---
(probably with an assist from the First Dude) appoints an interim senator to serve until a special election. I've no idea what the law says on special elections in Alaska.

This is like Louisiana voters reelecting William Jefferson and New Yorkers reelecting Adam Clayton Powell. Given the irregularities in the Stevens trial, including a juror leaving to go to a horse race and withholding of evidence favorable to his defense, he does stand a fair chance on appeal or even of getting a new trial from the trial judge.

He has been found guilty, but he has not yet been convicted. The attorneys among us will understand the distinction, and it is an important one.

DOC,

Thanks for the info. Irrespective of whether he is guilty or "convicted", he stands a good chance of being expelled. Palin will nominate an interim to replace him and that replacement will, in all likelihood, be a very poplular republican so as to increase the likelihood that (s)he would win a special election.
