A review by the American military has found that a local Afghan police chief and another district leader helped Taliban militants carry out an attack in July in which nine United States soldiers were killed and a remote American outpost in eastern Afghanistan was nearly overrun.

The day before the attack, the militants began flowing water through an irrigation ditch feeding an unused field, creating background noise that masked the sounds of the advancing fighters.

So that's how Ann Coulter came up with 'swimmingly' to describe the situation in Afghanistan.

"The attack on the outpost, near Wanat, caused the worst single loss for the American military in Afghanistan since June 2005, and one of the worst over all since the invasion in late 2001. It underscored the vulnerability of American forces in Afghanistan, as well as the continuing problem posed by uncertainties over the loyalties of their Afghan allies, especially the Afghan police."

Seven years later and it's the worst attack since the invasion.

How is it, that in all that time, things aren't better, that an attack like this can be made....and by 200 of them, greatly outnumbering Americans????

1. You got a man who comes from a family of drug-lords to be 'president' of Afghanistan... Karsick. His brother (biggest drug lord in the country) does deals with the taliban all the time, selling them weapons.

2. You tried to push Pakistan into your 'war on terror' by killing 11 Pakistani border-guards and then claiming they were bombed by accident.

So... when we 'forgot' to tell you that a taliban force was on it's way.... consider that an 'accident' too. LOL

Main reason is pure and simple. Afghans have always been ruled by drug-lords and you just picked the worst drug-lords to lead the country.

Drug-Lords and their minions are loyal to nobody except themselves.

Simple.

EVERY mistake comes with a price.

a remote American outpost in eastern Afghanistan was nearly overrun.

The base is a ghost-base now.... empty. Nobody is manning that place. Too dangerous.

Yeah, but paybacks are a bitch:

"KANDAHAR, AFGHANISTAN Dozens of Afghan civilians are dead and dozens more are wounded after a series of air strikes aimed at Taliban fighters fell short of their target and exploded in the middle of a wedding party in a mountainous region north of Kandahar city, tribal elders and wedding guests told The Globe and Mail on Tuesday.

Survivors of the attacks, which occurred in the village of Wech Baghtu in the district of Shah Wali Kowt on Monday evening, said the majority of the dead and injured were women the bombs struck while male and female wedding guests were segregated, as is customary in Kandahar province.

They said the bodies of at least 36 women have been identified, and hundreds more men and women have been injured. Local leaders have yet to establish a firm casualty count because many of the victims remain buried beneath rubble, said Abdul Hakim Khan, a tribal elder from the district."

Why don't they just get married in a church like good people?

Unfortuneatly, unless the soldiers are untied, you cant do this you cant do this-this bullshit will continue to happen. If you cant fight wars the way the need to be dont and learn the Kookran.

Northguy should we have left Japan and Germany alone, dont be an idiot.

babbies too NG3

Northguy should we have left Japan and Germany alone, dont be an idiot.

Seem to remember they declared war on us. We're liberating the poor people of afghanistan from the evil taliban, remember?

So get any racing in this summer? Saw Gateway a couple times on PINKS ALL OUt.

After reading the Lone Survivor with in the last week, any Goat Herder that sighted me, would hit the ground in about a sec.

Hey NG look at what the soldiers cant do, in I think you could afford to buy the book and read it. If gives you a clear idea of how the afghans and Talibans works together and with the rules against how americans can not reposonp.

NG I had 7 friends at Gateway, slightly to fast and slow damnit. My friends dug my car out and readied it, I was somewhat unsure, as i Have now 3 Surgeries on my brain, the upper 1/3 of my lung removed and a massive abdominal surgeryin the last for years, thats why you have not seen me much. You know I am very blessed in many ways.

Our track useses a .500 react to the green and I was cutting .506 and.507 and .510 and the worst was .526. Ran 4 perfect dials, ended up 7th of 70, not bd for not racing in 5 years. thanks for asking you should see how well they cleaned it up. If you can get me an email some how I will send a pic NG.

how come we seem to blow up a lot of weddings, doesnt that seem strange/ I dont recall seeing one wedding blown up in WWI, WW2, Korea, or Vietnam.

1st one I saw was in Irag. Seems strange to me, it should too you NG.

Sorry NG-the book is Lone Survivor.

Thank God too

I think we should send that bastard (The Police Chief) over to GTMO for fun in the sun and waterboarding. No need for suntan oil though and I'm sure our soldiers would give him water and some sausage and biscuits for breakfast.

If you want to fight a war--declare it. We are not at war---get the troops out.

Thwe only reason we have troops in Afghanistan is to kill bin Laden. Sending troops after a criminal is simply a waste of time and money. Use that money for bribesd and find out where bin Laden is, then use that money to pay Afghans to kill him. If they won't take money to kill him, use threats--blackmail---send in a kill team---but using the army for the little task of killing one man is stupid---no matter if the idea comes from Bush or Obama.

If they won't take money

OF COURSE they take money. Didn't I say they have always been into drugs? (heroin and now cannabis as well... 90% of world supply).

People whose lives are run by the drug trade are into money, big time.

OF COURSE they take money.

And they take Bin Ladin's money all the time... LOL

If his money is good enough, so is yours.

I am fairly sure we have interrupted more than a few weddings since the advent of aerial delivery systems...think Hiroshima, Dresden etc.

But the fellows at the combat outpost post just screwed up big time. They will be a lesson on not what to do. BTW, combat outpost are just that. They are transitional, temporary defensive sites from where to conduct ops.

But still, they defeated a force three times thier size. Not bad. Glad they had assets avaiable to help them out. Otherwise it could have been really bad.

Otherwise it could have been really bad.

You don't understand how bad it was in the sense that Americans have not been able to setup a similar post again anywhere since then.

Taliban now walk free and have advantage of higher ground.

Tosser,
Don't make me giggle. There are plenty of these COPs that go up every day. I know. My friends are doing them.

There are plenty of these COPs that go up every day.

Not in the Taliban infested areas. At least I haven't heard.

I get my info from the Afghans at the neighborhood tea-house.

What you are calling COPs now consist of shipping containers slapped together. They are very mobile.

If that is what you mean, then technically you are correct, they can be set up anywhere or be removed from anywhere.

But are they the kind of permanent posts that can withstand enemy assault of reasonable force or check the advance of the taliban?

No. You have to call in air support every time. Which ends up killing people having weddings.

I get mine from the guys on the ground too. They are not permenant post. They do seem to act like an attractant.

I think it is part of the Taliban strategy to attract fire into civilians. Makes for effective propaganda.

I think it will take some careful planning to be effective with these. Fire planning is a key factor.

Perhaps, but knowing them, I don't think so.

At least once, what happened was, a wedding was bombed because the pilots noticed bullets flying up at them.

Actually, afghans always fire kalashnikovs into the air in celebration and from a few thousand feet up, it looks like they are trying to get you. LOL

Ordinary Kalashnikovs have been known to bring down planes so the threat is taken seriously, wedding or not.

20 years ago a Pakistan International Airlines plane.. a Fokker (small turboprop)... crashed in Peshawer when he was coming in for a landing. The pilot's last words were "I am taking ground fire..."

Another bloody wedding.

Btw, many of the "taliban" are NOT "taliban". They are smugglers and they shoot at you because you are putting a dent in how they make a living.

Sure we had the same thing in Iraq. (and in the SW US along the US/Mexico border) After Iraq won the big soccer match in 2006 Baghdad just erupted with jubilant gunfire.
As for the smugglers, No problem, business is business. Long as everyone knows the rules.
