Barack Obama's grandmother Madelyn Dunham, who helped raise him and who he praised as the cornerstone of his family, died Monday after a battle with cancer. "She was one of those quiet heroes that we have all across America. They're not famous. Their names aren't in the newspapers," he said at a rally. "But each and every day they work hard. They look after their families. They sacrifice for their children and their grandchildren. They aren't seeking the limelight. All they try to do is just do the right thing."

An Omen?

An omen of what?

She knew he is going to be our next President.

Only a loon would think otherwise.

Sorry for your loss, Mr President.

1 more day and she could have seen one of the most impressive achievements in the history of this country. And her part in making it happen!!!

Rest in peace Mrs. Dunham. It's a shame you didn't get to see all of your work helping to raise Barack come to fruition.

Wonder if she's still going to vote tomorrow.

"WISGOD"...You an your kind are whats really wrong with this Country. You are true SLIME, now I just wonder if your Friends on Right Wing Radio, Limbaugh, Savage, Hannity an O'Rielly will apologize to the Obama Family for implying that he was going to Hawaii during the campaign for reason other than that Sen Obama Grandmother was truly sick??????? You might want to get used to spelling it correctly, nutjob.

Oh don't let him get your goat Cel.

He just starves for attention. There are much worse humans on this planet than Wis.

CELISARY:
I know you may not want to believe this, but some of us are voting for McCain and it isn't because Barack is black, or whatever race he claims to be this week.

USA,

Lush Rimjob would like that too much, please come up with something more painful.

I said she would die before the election, she knew too much. He only spent an hour with her when he went over, he really went to try and stop a lawsuit against him. Another has been filed in regards to his campaigning for his cousin Odinga the terrorist on the taxpayers dime. Being black won't help him forever.

See?

Trig Palin flags for a coupla folks here today.

RIP Mrs Dunham.

You overcame your own prejudices and raised a child to become not only a good man, but a United States President.

Barack Obama has never made claims to be anything other than black, NJDevil. Suggesting otherwise is a cheap shot.

It's a terrible shame that Obama's grandmother didn't live to see tomorrow's vote. But the pride she must have taken in his accomplishments, and the family he has raised, would be more than enough for most of us I think.

No need. Hawaii has early voting and she already cast her ballot for the future president.

No need. Hawaii has early voting and she already cast her ballot for the future president.

Well there is something to discuss.

Do you have to be alive on election day for your vote to count?

I would think that you should.

Yea, I was talking to a guy from Oregon today and they do it by mail. A lot of different approaches to it. I've always voted on Election day only, in person.

Wisgod,

I wasn't specifically addressing that to you. However, it seems that you've tried on the shoes and liked the way they fit. Thank you Earl Butz.

Yea, I was talking to a guy from Oregon today and they do it by mail.

We can mail it or drop it off in an official ballot box.

It is too late to mail it anymore. But we have a lot of drive thru drop offs and the traffic is always insane.

I dropped mine off about 2 weeks ago.

MANYPATHS:
Damn good question. Anyone have an answer to it?

You may have something there MP, but since it's still permissible to have a secret ballot in the US how would they know which one to remove? And does someone know with certainty that she voted for Barack? Technicalities, technicalities.

Mrs. Dunham will most definitely know Obama won handily well before the rest of us will.

But the pride she must have taken in his accomplishments, and the family he has raised, would be more than enough for most of us I think. - RCADE

How can you possibly know that? Maybe she was ashamed at the church he attented. Maybe she was ashamed that he associated with ayers and rezko. Maybe she was ashamed that he let his aunt live in a slum in Boston and let his brother live on $12/year. Maybe she was ashamed he voted against partial birth abortion bans.

In short, how the hell do you know what made here proud? Did she tell you or the press. Let me know.

It's not too late for Sarah Palin to go on the stump and claim Obama had her killed to try and get a sympathy vote!

Come on you sorry ass Fucking Republicans,,,Don't give up !!!

I know you may not want to believe this, but some of us are voting for McCain and it isn't because Barack is black, or whatever race he claims to be this week.

We know. It's cause you're suffering from battered wife syndrome...watch out for the door, bitch, it'll wipe out your 401k.

but since it's still permissible to have a secret ballot in the US how would they know which one to remove?

Well if it is like our ballot, there are 2 envelopes. The outer envelope has my name and signiture to verify elegibility.

I don't think they are supposed to satrt counting any early votes yet, so one should be able to identify her ballot and negate based on the fact that she isn't alive.

I'm going with the practical here.

RIP. Either way, she died a winner as far as the election is concerned: if Obama wins, she saw it from the polls already; if McCain wins, she is spared the disappointment.

You're the first one to suggest such a thing. It's obvious how your mind works.

I am reading that the dead voter's vote counts, depending on the State.

RIP for Mrs. Dunham.

And the attacks here are ridiculous.

Geez, I agree with Murph on something.

Anyway, since noone noticed my Earl Butz reference, I'm gonna go start on dinner.

MANYPATHS, ACORN has made it possible for the dead and Mickey Mouse to vote.

Ohio is gearing up for a big legal battle if things turn ugly.

Shame on UStrueandblue7.

Well one last thing.

Trig Palin flag for Takitfromanidiot.

Hey Manypaths

Even though they do not tabulate the votes in Oregon until 8pm on election day, the data is read by the scanners at the county elections offices upon arrival and stored until then. This is why we get a lot of results at 8:05pm - all of these ballots cast have been read and their signatures compared against the registration records before the tabulation.

There should be no way to find or flag a particular ballot in such a manner as to disenfranchise the voter.

Besides, while election day is the final day to cast a ballot, it holds no other significance as to the legality or validity of any ballot cast except as to the meeting the deadline for voting. Therefore, any ballot cast within the timeframe of of the date the ballots were released to the public, and 8pm on election day, are valid ballots.

MANYPATHS, ACORN has made it possible for the dead and Mickey Mouse to vote.

No, it was actually State Officials that wrote those rules, but you're an idiot, so I understand your confusion.

ACORN registered the dead and Mickey mouse, and you didn't get my point: you get the 'pinhead'.

Therefore, any ballot cast within the timeframe of of the date the ballots were released to the public, and 8pm on election day, are valid ballots.

Not in all States.

And can you please explain how Obama's economic plan is going to help you personally?

Let us hold the Obama family in our prayers, pain and loss have no political affiliation. May God give them peace.

"MANYPATHS, ACORN has made it possible for the dead and Mickey Mouse to vote."

That's true, there were 3 witnesses highlighted by Colbert on Colbert Report", you could see the cartoon characters clear as a bell voting, hell, even Walt Disney showed up to vouch for them.

hey TAKITEZ even the Republicans dropped the Acorn story, aren't you getting tired of being an asshole?

I guess that is why Oregon can start validating the votes early.

I would think in the states that do not allow it that they would have to wait to verify the votes.

Anyone?

Onna, if you ignore him, he goes away eventually.

I think if someone is alive when they cast a legal ballot, it should count, regardless of their mortal status on Election Day.

Manypaths

That is why I was specific in stating Oregon

So in early voting states, a dead person's vote counts, but it would not have counted in other states?!?!?

You consider that fair?

I think REAGAN58 and USTRUEANDBLU7 are the liberal a....... but biased ONNA is too blind to see it.

Yeah, I am just wondering if anyone knows how it works in those other states. I think you got it right for the Big O!

On a side note, my boss is running for City Council. He left the country on vacation with his family on Saturday. When I got to work today, his completed ballot was in the Out Going Mail box, but it is too late to mail the ballot in. It has to be dropped off.

Hope he doesn't lose by one vote!

(Just kidding. I am going to drop it off for him.)

ACORN registered the dead and Mickey mouse, and you didn't get my point: you get the 'pinhead'.

#45 | Posted by takitez at 2008-11-03 05:48 PM | Reply

I disagree. I think you get the pinhead award. I think you get the award because you can't show how registering a fictitious voter will turn into a vote for Obama? Do you think someone named Mickey Mouse is going to show up and try to vote? Is that what you think pinhead?

People understand that Obama had nothing to do with any faulty registration, and that a few registered false voters because they got paid for each registration. There was never any intent on anyone actually voting, but keep on spreading the lies--after 8 years, people are finding it easier to see through them.

They were alive when they voted, and if they were properly registered, yes, it counts. And it is entirely fair.

The election PERIOD is approximately two weeks - any ballot cast is valid as long as the voter meets the registration requirements.

MANYPATHS

Funny video about the ONE guy who didn't vote this year:

www.cnnbcvideo.com

WHATSLEFT:
I respect that you have an opinion on that matter, but would you feel the same if it ended up working against the Democrats? It very well could.

The election PERIOD is approximately two weeks - any ballot cast is valid as long as the voter meets the registration requirements.

Again, but NOT in all states.

Colorado
Idaho
Kentucky
Minnesota
North Carolina
South Dakota

All of these States state that you may vote early, but for your vote to count you must be alive on election day.

How they verify that on every ballot is beyond me.

Wow, MANYPATHS. Good research efforts on your part. I set out to do the research on the net about the same time as you, but got distracted.

RIP...

Prior to early voting, people that were not alive on election day could not have their votes counted.

I agree with that.

Why should that fact change by allowing early voting?

Is that the purpose of early voting? To let people who are close to death participate?

I don't think it is.

I feel like Biden being interviewed by that loon in Orlando. Are you serious? You think Obama's grandmother wasn't proud of his accomplishments, his wife and his daughters? You think she bought hook, line and sinker all the dumb, desperate things right-wingers have been saying about him to win this election?

Thanks AU!

Hadn't seen that vid.

RIP

Everything I posted was true - desperate use by the McCain campaign maybe - but true - so how do you know she was proud? She most probably would have been proud of his daughters - his wife? Maybe. His association with rev wright? After obama called her a 'typical' white person you can't sell me on that one. c'mon arcade - how do you know she was proud?

I was hoping upon hope that she would live until tomorrow at least, but as AU so rightly said, she is going to know the results before the rest of us and she will be with her beloved husband and daughter to celebrate. May she rest in peace, and may she always be celebrated for what an outstanding job she did of raising an absolutely fantastic human being. I would slide on over to Flowbee's house of crazy to see if they have retracted any of their conspiracy bullshit but I see it is not necessary seeing as one of his minions has already spewed forth the "she knew too much and had to die" vileness right here. There is a special place in hell for people like that and the devil is rubbing his hands and sharpening his pointy knives waiting for Rush and Hannity.

Manypaths: Is that the purpose of early voting? To let people who are close to death participate?

Ok first, you should rid yourself of the notion that election day is some sort of sacrosanct date in history. It is merely the date in which all ballots must be submitted to be counted. There are many nations where voting takes place over a number of days. Someone who votes on day one may die before the voting period is over. What matters is how the state has made the rules for voting.

In Oregon, we have what is essentially a two week voting period. Election day is merely the last date in which a valid ballot may be submitted. If you were otherwise registered and legally eligible to vote in the state, your vote counts. In the state of Washington, a mail in ballot need only be postmarked by election day to be valid, so results in some close elections there may not be called until some time later in the week.

There is nothing sacred about a particular date for the election. The state makes the rules. If folks want them changed, they should become involved more than once every four years. Local officials are usually very concerned about a groundswell of public sentiment favoring changes to the way the elections take place.

As for whether the votes of a person who dies between submitting a valid ballot and election day can or should be pulled; it is highly unlikely any jurisdiction would even know a death had occurred unless it was brought to their attention. The elections officials run their databases through the social security deceased lists to purge the dead voters before they send the final lists out to the precincts. After that, it would take a major effort to determine who has died after voting, and where that particular ballot is, should it even be available given the differing methods of voting and counting.

In any case, the number of such cases is likely to be so small and equally spread amongst the voting population that the effects are negligent.

Rats, that's what I get for using a spell checker and not checking what it is changing.

NOT "negligent" but rather NEGLIGIBLE.

Sorry. That was BaaaaaD

Elcid - you dumbass "how do you know she was proud?" cause she was a fucking grandmother you moron. Most grammas I know would be proud of their grandkids even if they turned out to be a fucking axe murderer. And believe me I have seen lots and lots of "proud" grammas putting up their paid off homes for bail for their scum bag drug dealing grandkids cause "well he's normally such a good boy". Asshole.

I know she was proud of him because that's what she said about him in interviews, the last time she talked to reporters a couple years ago. And because it's a pretty safe bet that a man's grandmother, who raised him since age 10, isn't likely to believe all the dumb crap that gets shoveled out by his political opponents.

The fact you suspect otherwise -- and continue to press the point without a scintilla of evidence to support your unlikely claim -- tells me we're in for some fun times from the other side under an Obama presidency.

Thanks AU!

You're very welcome. I got a big kick out of the 60-ish year old woman cussing up a blue streak LOL

Next time I go to Hawaii I'm going to plant an American flag at Mrs. Rodham's grave in honor of the diligence, determination, sacrifice, and effort she successfully put into raising such a good human being.

Born in Peru Kansas Died in Hawaii. RIP

ACORN registered the dead and Mickey mouse, and you didn't get my point: you get the 'pinhead'.

Maybe you should research what the election officials and Acorn really do instead of spouting your nonsense.

Only a real pinhead like you would believe that Mickey Mouse would be registered to vote by Acorn.

Godspeed Toot.

LITLEBRITDIFRNT:

" ....but I see it is not necessary seeing as one of his minions has already spewed forth the "she knew too much and had to die" vileness right here"

USATRUEANDBLUE7 was the one who came up with it first, and he is one of your guys. Dumb ass.

The irony that Barack Obama is about to win the White House and less than 24 hours before that loses his grandmother who helped make him the man he is today is not lost upon Spud.

No, she didn't live long enuff to see him become the President of the United States of America but she knew he would.

Proud? Of course she was proud of him.

Most grandma's are proud of their grandkids fer finishing their soup and Toot had a helluva lot more reasons to be proud of her grandson for than that.

A woman who sacrificed for her country when she went to work for Boeing in WWII.

A woman who sacrificed for her family to make sure their lives were full.

A woman who worked herself up from a teller to one of the first women executives in the banking industry in Hawaaii.

Obama had a lot to be proud of in the personage of his beloved Grandmother.

At least he got to say good-bye to her unlike in the sad case of his mother's death by cancer.

There is solace in that.

RIP Madelyn Dunham.

Ya done good.

Be Well.

/Would it be cynical of Spud to suggest that this tragedy may do some good in terms of bringing out some sympathy votes in the undecideds?

Usatrueandblue,

I live in central Florida and last week on a local morning radio show one of the hosts said that Barak was "faking it", by going to see his grandmother in Hawaii.

I wrote him a nasty email this afternoon asking him if he still thought Barak was faking it.

some of us are voting for McCain and it isn't because Barack is black, or whatever race he claims to be this week.

~NJ Debbil

Yer such a POS.

Obama shifts claims from week to week?

Are you insane?

Obama has been forthright and consistent this entire campaign.

It's only the race-baiting, fearmongering, deliberately disingenuous flip flopping Capt Pancakes who's been all over the board in terms of trying to define Obama.

One week he's an elitist, the next he's too black and scary, then he's not black enuff, next he's a muslim, then he's an arab, then he's a terrorist, then he's a socialist, then he's a marxist.

Face it, you wingnuts on the right have been flopping around like a fish out of water, as inconstant as you have been egregiously factually challenged.

Just fer shits and giggles ya wanna tell us why you think Yawn McBush will be good fer America?

You guys are good at slandering Obama but in terms of saying sommat nice about yer guy you idjits are woefully lacking.

Is it the fact that he's too old?

/Otherwise known as the "experience argument"

Is it the fact that he's a lot like Dumbya?

/Known as the "Masochist argument"

Is it the fact that he nominated Scary Failin'?

/Known as the "Wow, look at her tits" argument

Do tell.

Be Well.

I wrote him a nasty email this afternoon asking him if he still thought Barak was faking it.

I don't care what the demon you call Jesus tells you; you have no soul. Many others do, but you don't.

I send out a heart felt condolence to the Dunham family in their moment of loss.

I've lost both my grandmothers and I know how painful it is.

Nice thought ZEITGEIST .....

In Obama's case the fact she raised him from the age of 10 on makes it an especially hard loss - especially now. But, I'm sure she knew he was doing well. No doubt God will tell her what happened before we know, if not by now.

I read in the Honolulu paper she'd had cornea surgery so she could watch the campaign on TV with better eyesight.

She was surely very proud of the man he became.

I'm sure she was proud of him Unity.

Ya. I read Mrs. Dunham's story a few months ago. Pretty remarkable story of her own. Several of her former employees at the bank had glowing things to say about how patient she was, how much she helped them to be sucessful, and what a great lady she was to work for.

betelg - must you be so dramatic? 10 out of ten people die - most of them are probably old and a portion of them have cancer. i said "r.i.p." for crying out loud. i don't fall down at the altar of obama.

Obama speaks about his grandmother in FL this morning

It took a lot of strength to put a smile on his face today during campaign stops even though he must be hurting badly from her death.

There's a slide show a little down the page. Thought I'd copied the pic location only.

Was this before or after he gave McCain the finger?

This pic says a lot:

Obama while speaking about his grandmother's death in FL shortly after finding out

Tell me AA, what does this pic say?

PHINPHAN

I'm so glad that people of your ilk will be forever trivialized after tomorrow.

You see a man crying, as he should, and you make it like he is doing the most amazing thing in the world. His gramma has died and he cried. That is what a real man does, don't get all mushy over this. People like you make something out of nothing. It that was President Bush, you would be calling him a wussy or something. you are a phoney.

This thread is about his grandmother dying. The pics are directly related to that sad event.

If Bush did it I could finally call him a real man.

This is the same man that gave Clinton and McCain the finger. That pic says a lot. And he is the same man that attacked a voting person in Joe the plumber. This is probably or future president. Class act you worship.

False: Obama gave anyone the finger
True: You are a first class asshole

Obama gave both of them the finger and there is no denying that. He is a socialist and belongs in Europe.

This headline could have been written about this pic:

McCain gives Obama the finger

Have a little respect for this woman. She raised a much much finer man than you turned out to be, PHINPHAN.

Posters like you who write posts just to be an asshole are a poor testimony to your mothers.

Obama gave both of them the finger and there is no denying that. He is a socialist and belongs in Europe.

You belong in a loony bin.

The wash of emotions he must be feeling today would overwhelm most people. I wish for him all of the strength he will need to carry on through this week, and the years to follow. His Grandma must have been very proud.

He is a socialist and belongs in Europe

~Flip Flop

Socialism? You keep saying this word like you know wot it means.

Spud would bet dollars to donuts you don't.

Yer just a no mind asshole who's been conditioned to piss himself when the word is uttered aloud who's never stopped to even understand what is so scary.

In other words yer pathetic.

Now go away. The adults are talking.

On Topic?

Barack is lucky to be able to have Michelle to lean on at this tumultuous time.

That gal's a rock.

Michelle and the girls will keep him grounded and sane.

That's a good thing.

The job will keep him too busy to grieve as he ought fer a while but that time will come.

Life's both sweet and sour.

Toot did a helluva job raising Barack Obama and America should be grateful for that.

If Spud had written the events of this election down in a novel four years ago and tried to sell it the publishers back then woulda unanimously declared it to be an unbelievable fairy tale replete with too many improbabile coincidences.

Even Hollywood would balk at this bittersweet "Hollywood ending".

Life is sooo much stranger than fiction.

RIP again to Ms. Madelyn Dunham.

She done good.

Be Well.

Since it appears the Senator Obama will be our next President (much to my dismay), It is too bad that his Grandmother did not get to see this happen.

Senator, my condolences to you and your family.

Jimmy Wallback,

Is there a lot of difference between Disney characters and lets say the Dallas Cowboys registered by ACORN?

just read all of the nice posts from people who would toast the death of the VP of the US.......

its a shame she died but then we all have had grandmothers die or will had.......

it must have taken courage to raise any black child during that time............

How convenient!!!! I guess a dead woman can't discuss issues surrounding his mysterious birth in Hawaii.

Let me guess...you are also going to piss on the Arizona Memorial

I really am not sure she was proud of him in the first place or not. He did throw her under the bus and he basically called her a racist. If I'd had a kid that did that, I probably wouldn't be proud of him. You people can kid yourself all you want but I am not going to attempt to talk for her but I can say how I'd feel.

Unlike you guys, I'm not going to talk ill of the dead as you did in Tony Snow's case. RIP Mrs Dunham.

Why not call the vital statistics office in Hawaii? Or are you too lazy?

BTW she voted with an absentee ballot on October 27 and her vote will count.

"How convenient!!!! I guess a dead woman can't discuss issues surrounding his mysterious birth in Hawaii."

I am here in my office on Bishop Street in Honolulu. If you would like to stop by and see how wrong you are I will give you my address and taxi fare....Asshole
