The Philadelphia Phillies finished off the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 in a three-inning sprint to win the World Series on Wednesday in a suspended Game 5 nearly 50 hours after it started. Left in limbo by a two-day rainstorm, the Phillies seesawed to their first championship since 1980.

Sorry for all the haters, but it's our turn for a change. Happy happy happy joy joy joy!!!!

Mets fans may again sit by and just admire.........

Tampa is a damn good young team with enough solid talent to keep coming back to the playoffs. But they didn't win this year, baby!!!

congrats! hopefully they showed the Obama infomercial on the jumbotron.

Ha! Probably did. Philly is definitely pro-Bama. But they also snow-balled Santa Claus and booed the Mummers, so you never know how they're going to react.

Cole Hamels is now a superstar.

Congrats Ted.....I knew that picking up Moyer would pay off.....

Philly had too much juice for the Rays....

COOKFISH

Congrats on the World Series !!

I know it's exciting as hell. No doubt Philly could use something uplifting.

WTG & Enjoy.

And what great sports guru predicted this, hmmm?

Phils in 5.

Maybe next year it can be a Philly/Seattle World Series.....

Worst to first, Tampa showed it can happen

Phillies will always have a place in my heart.

My first ball game was a Phillies-Dodgers doubleheader.

Dodgers won both games.

(Maybe. Don't really remember)

Thanks AU. Thanks Rex, you're right about Moyer, bro!! I am just stoked!! Because you just KNOW the Eagles ain't going to do it, when all's said and done.

Seattle?

In our lifetimes?

Hopefully the Eagles aren't going to 'do it' this weekend....

Seahawks 27 Eagles 17

The Mariners won 116 games in a season not to long ago....

Rex - shoot for the stars baby!!

Well, I don't care, but I ain't eatin' ya', that's for sure.

The Mariners won 116 games in a season not to long ago....

in a galaxy far away......Ha! I'll stop now, honest.

I thought Ryan Howard was going to crush Lidge....

Cubs '09

Gota go smoke a victory fattie! Be back........

I know, I know, the M's sucked.....Untilthe Series I hadn't watched a game in 3 months....longest time without watching a game during the season in at least 25 years....

Tho' I'll probably go to the parade on Friday.

Howard should have been a linebacker!! Lidge has all winter to heal from his crushed spine. Later, Rex!

YW

I was rooting for them, even though I have ties to Tampa Bay.

Philly needed something good. Glad it happened.

Next Tuesday's my World Series win

*grin*

Rogers - Thank you for the editing. They say you should act like you've been there, but it's been awhile!

Later man, enjoy the win with a phat one.....

Congrats Philly!! Well earned and well deserved. I am very surprised though that Tampa Bay just didn't show up. Better luck next time.

If Barack Obama is elected, Cuba is going to win the '09 series.

"Phillies Win World Series"

Yawwwwwwwwwwwn.

Another totally screwed up MLB event -- playing that game the other night in the rain just to get the ad dollars -- proving beyond any doubt that Bud Selig runs a close second to NBA commissioner David Stern in the "sports commissioners who suck rancid moose cock" department. Every year it is some debacle -- like running out of pitchers at the All-Star game a couple of years ago and having it end in a tie. What a clusterfuck.

Anyway.... congrats to the Phillys even though I was hoping the Rays would make a real series out of it.

playing that game the other night in the rain just to get the ad dollars

huh, they already had the dollars. they should have called the game earlier.

huh, they already had the dollars. they should have called the game earlier.

Yeah, good point. So now I'm even more stymied as to why they stayed at it. Maybe ratings, so they can boost ad dollars for next year? Eh, whatever.... Celts won last night.

it was bs tho...what wonderful 45 minutes of baseball tonight.

Rancho Bernardo High (Califronia) gave you this, Philadelphia. You're welcome.

Yeah, yeah, I mis-typed. Sue me.

"So now I'm even more stymied as to why they stayed at it."

Because if Philadelphia was ahead after an "official" game (5 innings) and they didn't give them the win, in the words of Bob Marley - "Burnin' and a lootin' tonight"

It's gotta be Seattle's turn. 1979 Sonics, that was it. only pro win this city has ever seen (womens basketball doesn't count). Now they're the OKC thunder. The Mariners sucked this year, the Seahawks are looking pretty sad.

Oh well, I think I will be very happy in 6 days. the biggest win of all!

congrats Phillies...if it couldn't be my Red Sox then I'm OK with this outcome!

Seattle? Don't you mean Oklahoma City?

Sorry Seattle. I would have preferred the Sonics remain where they belonged.....Seahags may get another shot someday.

Way to go Phightin' Phils.

Damn, I was hoping the Rays would humiliate them to make up for the utter failure of the Mets to make it into the playoffs this year. Oh well :(

I'm a NY sports fan, but I am happy for the Philly fans. Philadelphia fans are great, blue collar, live and die for sports and deserve a championship.

how long till they get obnoxious about it?

I predict November 08

Cincinnati Reds! 2030!! Go Reds!

Dayummm, the Phils actually managed to pull it off. Mi esposa is from Philly and she didn't allow me to provide updates on the series, she just KNEW they'd choke it.

Sports is the mechanism through which the wealthy and powerful manipulate and distract the masses. In past centuries, religion was used to control people's behavior; sports is now the tool of choice. The sheep will pay very close attention to which team wins the World Series [sic] (the World Series is not a global competition), but the sheep will pay no attention to the pillaging of the Federal Treasury by the military-industrial complex, aided by the Bush-Cheney administration.

As a nation, we will ignore the homeless, the collapse of the educational system, and the illegal activities of the government so long as it doesn't interfere with NASCAR.

Damn, Ricky Joe sure can race that car! Pass me another Bud Light.

If the Rays hadn't tied it just before the umps noticed that it was raining, they'd have had to call it a complete game and give the Phils the world series on the basis of five innings. Man, wouldn't THAT have been poetic justice for Jebbie, Ms. Harris and the folks who stole the 2000 election? herm

Broad St was so insane. Tens of thousands of people going absolutely nuts. I don't think I went home till 3 in the morn. Thousands of people singing "We are the champions" on South Broad. I went into my local bar in South Philly and I swear there were more High School kids in there than adults. Everyone, and I mean everyone was completely wasted. It was awesome.

Never would have happened. Douche bag Selig said before the game that there was no way any World Series game was going to be called on account of the weather. Suspended yes, called no. He still made the biggest bone head decision of all time by deciding to play the game, adding to the list of why he's the worst commissioner in MLB history, but at least he didn't hand us the World Series in a BS manor. Nobody and I mean nobody wanted that.
