Well, PROUD, my dad worked in the union for 46 years... and I did for close to twenty before I moved into management.

I watched my previous employer pull up stakes cause the district union rep "had a feeling" there was more money to be had for an 8% annual raise even though management insisted we would force their hand.

I watched thousands of good manufacturing jobs leave my home state because the union refused to negotiate in good faith-I know this first hand cause I worked there.

I remember getting pink layoff slips because I had less seniority while I watched slackers get reinstated when the union took it to arbitration. Kind of tough to tell the wife and kids your out of a job... when you know you worked as hard as any but had to battle the dreaded seniority rule.

Yep, maybe years ago unions helped the worker but all the good they may have done has been far out shadowed by all the inefficiencies they have created for the last 20+ years.

And what kills me is the Dems and Obama want to destroy a democratic foundation... the secret ballot. Why would anyone want to get rid of the ballot... if unions were so good for the country.

Smashmouth, I don't disagree with the malcontent you have now regarding unions. I too worked non-union management in a union shop. I know my brother struggles with being the non-union manager of union employees who aren't held up to the same standard he is. BUT, in my case, some of the same privileges the union members negotiated were also given to the non-union members - certain holidays off, salary surveys, and increased pay, among others.

Yes, perhaps some unions need overhauled. The union jobs in our company are gone, but so are about 90% of the other jobs. I'm still not union and I'm still teetering on the edge of unemployment myself. The goods we sell are not necessities and without employed Americans making living wages, I won't have a job either. I can't blame that on the union. I blame it on our policy makers on all sides of the party lines.

I guess I just take exception to the blanket statements that liberals/unions/Democrats don't want to work for a living. I've worked more-or-less since I was 15 - I took a couple of weeks off to have my children. I always paid my own way. I spent 6 months on food stamps once, not because I wanted something for nothing, but because I needed to eat. I dug my way out, I got a job, I got an education. There is no doubt there are those who will do whatever they can to get free money but I think that's the exception as opposed to the rule. The rest of us just want a fair shake.

I honestly have not read up enough on the Employee Free Choice act to make an informed opinion. What I have read, on its face, I see both sides.

I know the memory of your pink slip is tough. But I'd like to think that the original purpose of the union seniority rule was so that companies couldn't force out higher-paid older workers in favor of younger, lower-paid workers. I agree that unions need to take a tougher stance on its members and allow companies to make more decisions based on performance. It helps the company stay competitive.

I have seen the hardest working people I know terminated from their job because new management came in and they just didn't like them, while back-stabbing, turd-meisters stayed on because of their ability to schmooze and suck-up. Somewhere there has to be happy middle ground. And for unions to survive, I think it's incumbent on them to work with their employers to their mutual satisfaction. There are successful unions out there doing this. I read some examples when I was more immersed in the union culture but don't have any ready references.

However, you should ask why Honda, Toyota, and Hyundai can manufacture in the US and Ford and GM can't do it. It isn't the unions, since they all pay very well, and in some cases the benefits are even better than union benefits and wages. Americans are making these cars and embarassing the "US" manufacturers like Ford who is more of a foreign manufacturer than Honda as far as I'm concerned. Ford is a Mexican car.
