Funny thing is, if McCain had done only a couple things different, this might have been a tough choice for me. Were he to run like he did in 2000, have never gone sucking up to right-wing religious exremists that he once denounced, I would have still respected him. Had he had the balls to take a pro-choice VP, or gone a step further and picked up a democrat, I would have figured actions do speak louder than words, and we can trust this guy to go a different direction than Dumbya. I probably would have voted for him as having the experience to fix the screw-ups of the last 8 years. He was, after all, the republican candidate I wanted to win in the primaries back then, not the retarded one.
However, in his desparation to win, McCain seems to show the scars he must have taken from the neo-cons and Karl Rove's tactics to get Bush in office, and thinking he had to adapt them for himself or lose, he adopted them. Then, he took a VP that he probably thought was a political stunner and gambled on her haveing already been properly vetted by the Alaskan race for governor, not realising just how provincial that state really is. Were it not for that, I might have still thought Obama will have his turn, he just needs to be in a bit longer, and earn it.
Unfortunately for McCain, and i think a lot of people share my view, gambling on the person who could take the job 10 minutes after being sworn in (our shortest termed president lasted a mere 30 days) should he suddenly have some sort of accident or emergency, rather than putting careful thought into it, is not a politically astute move, no matter how attention grabbing. Furthermore, when that gamble not only fails, but puts the most ignorant, anti-science religious zealot, a cultural conservative who attacks Obama as a socialist and a marxist but who runs the highest tax-and-spend state in the union, a provincial, folksy-talking virtually uneducated moron a hearbeat away from running the whole of the US, I couldn't vote for him even if Obama happened to be Karl Marx himself.
I think it's too bad for poor McCain. It's sad to see someone sell their soul and get ripped off.
