More than 500,000 pounds of processed uranium -- enough to make six nuclear weapons -- was secretly transported thousands of miles on a month-long trip from a research reactor in Budapest, Hungary, to a facility in Russia, U.S. officials revealed Wednesday.

Makes me feel all "warm" inside when I read things like this.

13 radiation-proof casks, each weighing 17,000 pounds, ..........., carrying 341 pounds of weapons-usable uranium,

Someone realy sucks at math. That is 221,000 lbs of casks. I can't tell if each was carring 341 lbs or if it was a total of 341 lbs. In any event there wasn't 500,000 lbs weapons usable material (whatever that is). Is that weapons grade material or material that weapons can be made out of? It has been my experience that there are very few places that can make weapons grade material. My guess it is material that weapons could be made from if processed.

Weapons usable material is U-232, which is a weapons-usable material like weapons-grade plutonium (WGP) and high-enriched uranium (HEU). It is very dangerous in the wrong hands. What will happen most likely is it will be converted into a non-weapons-usable form to avoid the costs and risks associated with safeguards and security of weapons-usable materials. U-233 may be used to produce bismuth-213 (Bi-213) for treatment of certain cancers.

Basically it is some serious shit until it can be diluted with enough U-235 to effectively make it non-weapons-usable material.

"Weapons usable material is U-232"

HAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

F in physics flag.

233 typo in that but I made it clear in the rest of my post that is it 233. I did receive an F in Physics in high school though. Probably because I mixed up too many numbers. lol

Just - forget about it, ZAT invented physics.

"It is very dangerous in the wrong hands." - Good reason to ship it secretly isn't it.

Spud read this story this morning and wasn't sure wot to make of it.

While it's nice that the US and Russia are workig together to "secure" nuclear materials from former Soviet sattelites Spud aint too comfy with the notion that Putin has honorable intentions here.

This story is all over the place so the MSM really want this "secret" told fer some reason.

This reason eludes Spud at the moment.

More cogitation is required.

Slightly off topic?

Most spent nuclear fuel is transported secretly.

It travels down the highways and byways of America on it's way to increasingly limited and crumbling dump sites.

It's the nuclear industry's dirty little secret.

Obama sez he supports another look at increasing nuke plants in the US if it can be done safely.

McCain promises 45 new nuke sites. Period.

Do Not Want.

No nukes is good nukes.

Be Well.

This is nothing new, go check out the 747 el-al crash in amsterdam, secretly shipping nuke materials and didn't tell the clean up workers.

Imagine those people all getting sick and dying but israel still wouldn't tell what they were shipping.
