In a welcome comedic break for a good cause, Barack Obama and John McCain roasted each other at the annual Alfred E. Smith dinner at New York City's Waldorf Astoria hotel. The annual fundraiser was hosted for years by the late Tim Russert, who always had a good sense of humor.

it was awesome - i taped the whole segment and when i ask my children how to post something like this they tell me, "you'll figure it out mom." so far no good.

they were both extremely funny and to be quite honest, i thought hillary looked radiant.

It's on CSPAN right now. Funny stuff.

Hope you'll enjoy these. It was good to laugh while both of them roasted each other.

I didn't watch either video before posting them, and now I see McCain's audio is out of sync.

Here's a video of McCain's speech that isn't

www.youtube.com

It was really fun and refreshing to watch these two candidates laugh and poke good natured fun at each other.

They had a Cardinal sitting between them just in case LOL Just kidding. It's a Catholic fund raiser. Alfred E Smith was the first Catholic to run for the Presidency, during a time they were looked upon like Muslims are today - with suspicion.

OK. Enjoy!

Oh, and McCain poked fun at Keith Olbermann, who was backstage during McCain's stop at the Letterman show "just in case" McCain didn't show up. That was a funny bit too.

AU-

I watched them both last night as the video was played on the Rachel Maddow show and thought both McCain and Obama did a great job. It was refreshing to actually sit back and enjoy them having a bit of fun. Obviously I'm partisian, but I don't think it's partisanship speaking when I say John McCain would've done his campaign and his legacy a whole hell of a lot more good if he'd come across like this instead of the angry geezer. Thanks for posting this. Truly enjoyed it.

Tekkie query, AU -

How do you get the video shot to appear in the space normally reserved for the teaser?

I usually open a second browser window and go to YouTube or wherever, or if I'm on another site, I'll open a second window and go to Drudge to my page and hit "Write a Blog Entry". I leave both windows open and move them so I can click from one to the other.

Copy the code in the "Embed" area to the right of videos on YouTube (or wherever it is on other sites) and paste it into the 'Body' section here when creating a thread.

The easiest way to copy the "Embed" code is to highlight it all by holding the Control key and then "A" on a PC, or Apple+A on a Mac. It will turn colors (usually blue) Then hit Control+C on a PC, or Control+C on a Mac to copy it to your clipboard.

Return to the window with the thread on DR you're creating and paste it into the "Body" window (below the Intro box).

On YouTube, the "Embed" code is right under the "URL" box to the right of the video you want to post.

It was funny, the both of them.

"i thought hillary looked radiant."

She was in the dark.

But she did send a tingle up my leg.

LOL

It was a pleasure to watch both of them after this vicious political campaign (on McCain's part LOL)

I posted Obama's and McCain's on the Back Page.

www.drudge.com

Tip: You can make them full screen by clicking that button on the bottom right of the video player.

I should have said "Apple+C" on a Mac.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance

:-)

AU -
Thanks, I'll give it a try.
Maybe with Nixon's "Checkers" speech.

DOC

In a nutshell, however you choose to copy the "Embed" code for a video, just paste that in the "Body" section when creating a thread.

I just learned all kinds of shortcut keys. They save a lot of time and mouse movement.

For instance, when you want to go back or forward to pages in your browser windows, instead of using your mouse and clicking on the arrows you can do either of the following:

PC- Hold "ALT" and hit the Back or Forward arrow keys on your keyboard.

MAC- Hold "APPLE" and hit the Back or Forward arrow keys on your keyboard.

I just saw a 2 hour special on PBS about Nixon's political career starting with his first run for the House after he got out of the Navy.

Funny how his political tactics were so similar to some we're hearing about today. "Robocalls" saying Obama kills puppies during Satanic Islamic ceremonies and the like LOL

DOC

Here's Nixon's Checkers speech on YouTube:

www.youtube.com

Copy and paste the "Embed" code where I said when you create the thread. It's to the right of the video under "URL" in the "Embed" box. Highlight that code, copy, and then paste into "Body" when creating a thread.

You'll see a box the size of the video when you Preview the thread before Publishing it if it's OK.

DOC

These are better quality video. Part 1 and Part 2 rather than one 12 minute full length - as the other is

You can post both videos in one thread. Just copy and paste the Embed code one at a time and double space between the two codes.....

Part 1 - www.youtube.com

Part 2 - www.youtube.com

Thanks, AU.

It's amazing (to me) what can be done, messing around with a keyboard.

thankx for that lesson in vid embedding, a.u.

NANC

You're welcome.

However, if you post any Sean Hannity or FOX News tripe I swear I'll climb through this monitor and crash your hard drive! LOL

Doc #6 - I have to agree. I happened to be flipping channels and saw McCain telling jokes in a white tie on CSPAN and thought, what is this? So I watched quite a bit of it. McCain came off as a sharp-witted guy who managed to make his points and get some laughs without seeming grumpy or mean-spirited. Obama did a nice job as well. I kind of needed that after such a brutal, divisive political season. Not to be too corny about it, but in times like these, my cynicism takes a breather. I love this country!

CBOB

Of course, they had the Cardinal of New York sitting between them LOL

It was really fun to watch though. Much needed.

Yeah, AU, I grew up Catholic. I know the drill. Get outta line, the knuckles get rapped!

I remember once being led by the ear by Sister Agnes Jude all the way down the hall to the principal's office (Sister Regina Fidelis) for some elementary-school transgression. Sister RF proceeded to give me a whack on the behind with a large book. I feared that nun like my brother in law fears spiders, which is to say, somewhat irrationally.

Of course, the old woman actually had a heart of gold. She was just serious about discipline. When she retired, turning from The Enforcer into a sobbing, kid-hugging mass of black-and-white jelly, I saw what a sweetheart she was.

I think John McCain has found his calling, and should be elected Toastmaster General of the United States.

He and his material were funny as hell, and it humanized him some. Obama was good, too, but most of his material was not as funny as McCain's.

I'm also glad that Hillary finally had something to laugh about, as it looked like she was having fun too.

I liked Obama's line about Bubba, when he mentioned a third term, and Bill said, "You can do that?"

i think they both needed this

no matter who wins

they have to work together after january
and two guys angry at each other with the powers of their party would be a bad thing for the usa.

glad this was done.

Their speeches were great. Wish the campaign had more moments like them.

I don't understand how McCain could be gracious enough to take Obama's jokes in good humor here, and two days earlier have steam coming out his ears during the presidential debate. If he had shown this much good humor in the debates, McCain might not be trailing by 8-10 points in the polls.

I think John McCain has found his calling, and should be elected Toastmaster General of the United States.

Bob Dole post election was a witty and funny guy. It must be that calvanistic streak to the GOPpers, where humor is evil and gets in the way of making a buck.

The roasting was great for the candidates and for our unity. We need more like them.

well we are pretty much in agreement here

you could tell that mccain had a much better speech writer for the event because I am sure that neither wrote it

but YOU COULD Tell that after mccain was so gracious about obama that barry had to wing something good about it

and maher on larry king went after obama for his last couple of lines about God and all that....

typical

BEST MCCAIN MOMENTS

talking about someone in the room wanting him to win and then talking to hillary

BEST OF ALL

telling THE TRUTH about the economy getting better then obama would have to run back to DC to change it

AS THEY SAY..........comedy usually has a lot of truth in it.......

but again.....it was pretty refreashing wasnt it

and the media would love for this to have been going on all the time as well.........cant bring up rezko and ayers and jwright and raseed kahula when you are roasting

bushlover, seems you're having a hard time removing those partisan lenses.

both of them were funny as hell. it's a testament to our democracy that we can do that. at the end of the day, we all have to work together and illegitimatizing elections and calling people terrorist-sympathizers, or dishonorable and warmongers. doesn't help.
