My Mom had atrial fibrillation and took medication for it for years.

She took Tambocor and Lanoxin -- two drugs one of which which strengthens the heart and the other which helps regulate the heartbeat. The most important medication she took was Coumadin which is a blood thinner.

With AT your heart can all of the sudden beat irregularly. It can beat real fast, or it can beat normally and all of the sudden slow down and then speed up again, or it can beat normally but all of a sudden skip a beat or two -- any kind of irregular heartbeat pattern -- is considered atrial fibrillation.

The danger with AT comes when your heart slows down (or skips a beat or two) for a long enough time to allow the blood to thicken to the point where a blood clot can form, break off, and then travel to the brain and cause a stroke. That's why anyone with this condition always takes a blood thinner -- to keep the blood thin enough at all times in order to prevent a blood clot from even being able to form when any heartbeat irregularity starts.

In Cheney's case, his heartbeat needs to be "electrically kicked" back into a regular heartbeat pattern. They use those "paddles" on the chest which emit an an electrical jolt to the heart and gets the heartbeat back into a normal rhythm again.

I know. But the rat poison is in such a small amount it does not harm humans. Still, it is essential that anyone taking a blood thinner get a "prothrombin" blood test once a month to make sure the Coumadin level in the blood is within the prescribed range of safety. It can be an unstable drug and easy to build up too high (or too low) a level in your blood. My Mom had her blood tested once a month.

Jeff J - I don't care who the guy is. The article doesn't change my opinion at all. After one reading I see several flaws with his logic:

1) He inidcates the military loss in Afghanistan is the reason the Soviet Union fell. Ridiculous. The Soviet Union had financial trouble and fell apart. You know what is causing the US huge financial trouble? The war in Iraq due to absolutely no oversight on ridiculous spending. Furthermore the whole "pick your battlefield" doesn't make any sense if we are in Afghanistan anyway. Obviously, we still have to send troops where the enemy actually is, which isn't Iraq.

2) He dances around the issue that Iraq had no WMDs. This is the reason the American public was given for going in. He kind of pretends that these imaginary WMDs posed some kind of threat to us too. That's strange.

3) He ludicrously supports the silly Neocon notion that you can change the entire Middle East by installing a government in Iraq. That's as naive a pipe dream as bringing world peace by buying the world a Coke.

4) He's pretending that the people we fight in Iraq are largely the same people who attacked us and that we haven't made more enemies by invading Iraq. If that were true, we would need to be in Afghanistan and we wouldn't be bombing Pakistan.

5) He entirely ignores the ethical issue of "choosing your battlefield" by invading a country full of innocent people who posed no threat to us and kiling hundreds of thousands in the proces.
