Christopher Hitchens: Last week's so-called town-hall event showed Sen. John McCain to be someone suffering from an increasingly obvious and embarrassing deficit, both cognitive and physical. And the only public events that have so far featured his absurd choice of running mate have shown her to be a deceiving and unscrupulous woman utterly unversed in any of the needful political discourses but easily trained to utter preposterous lies and to appeal to the basest element of her audience.

"I suppose it could be said, as Michael Gerson has alleged, that the Obama campaign's choice of the word erratic to describe McCain is also an insinuation. But really, it's only a euphemism. Anyone with eyes to see and ears to hear had to feel sorry for the old lion on his last outing and wish that he could be taken somewhere soothing and restful before the night was out. The train-wreck sentences, the whistlings in the pipes, the alarming and bewildered handhold phrases"My friends"to get him through the next 10 seconds. I haven't felt such pity for anyone since the late Adm. James Stockdale humiliated himself as Ross Perot's running mate. And I am sorry to have to say it, but Stockdale had also distinguished himself in America's most disastrous and shameful war, and it didn't qualify him then and it doesn't qualify McCain now."

DOC

I'm such a skeptic.

For example, I don't believe this economic meltdown was an accident. I think it was planned. I think it was part of the neo-cons scorched earth policy in their ongoing effort to destoy a country in order to rebuild it in their own image.

I believe that the neocons have known for a long time that they were going to lose this election but planned for this meltdown to happen on a Democrat's watch.

I believe that McCain's "eratic" behavior was because their timing was off and it threw him for a loop.

I believe that they intended to use a "recession" on Obama's watch to defeat him for a second term in 2012 while denying they had anything to do with it ~ four years after the fact.

I believe that the Bush administration fully intended to engage Iran before his term was up but was thwarted by the (their) bad timing of this economic disaster.

I believe that Bush, Cheney and everyone working for them behind the scene plotted to create as much havoc as they could possibly muster for the next President ~ a Democrat they knew would be their replacement.

We should all be counting our blessings that the neocons are so incompetent. Obama and America can rebuild the economy but an all out war in the middle east would be out of control before we could blink an eye. (What a fine talking point that would make in 2012)

I can't even express how thankful I am that Barack Obama came along when he did. Without trying to sound melodramatic, I think he was born for this job. I truly believe that somebody must be watching out for us. Who, I don't know. But somebody for sure.

Twinpac -

It's hard to believe that the Republicans didn't realize they were driving this country's economy straight off a cliff.

I still brace for an October Surprise, though I can't imagine what it might be short of kicking OBL's head across the WH lawn.

On Iran, I think you're right: the Bush Administration certanly looked like it was choosing a collision course.

The amount of damage done our country (and others) by this bunch of kakistocrats is nothing short of mindbogglng.

I heard Robert Baer the other day on "Fresh Air." He's got a new book out, The Devil We Know: Dealing with the New Iranian Superpower (www.amazon.com). If you're interested you can catch Baer's interview with Terri Gross atwww.npr.org

What Doc and TWinpac said.

OK I will be a dumb ass too, I agree.

Sylvester Stallone will vote for McCain.

I believe that the neocons have known for a long time that they were going to lose this election but planned for this meltdown to happen on a Democrat's watch.

I completely agree with this, though they probably wanted it to start in November.

Sylvester Stallone will vote for McCain.

Yeah, but that begs a very important question.

Who is Frank Stallone supporting?

DOC,

Is your portfolio feeling better?

One of the wackiest conspiracy theories I just read above is that the neocons planned this meltdown. In the first place, they don't have the capabilities and in the second it makes no sense to destroy GOP chances this year and even jeopardize their filibuster power. Obviously, some libs are blinded by their hatred for Bush and it has eaten away at the part of their brains that control reasoning.

I have seen this guy on several talking heads programs and if this conservative zealot says vote for Obama, you know the McCain/Palin ticket is full of shit.

You are absolutely correct. President Nero would never intentionally do that.

Not as brilliant as Dawkins, but he certainly hit it big with "God is not Great".

For example, I don't believe this economic meltdown was an accident. I think it was planned. I think it was part of the neo-cons scorched earth policy in their ongoing effort to destoy a country in order to rebuild it in their own image.

I don't think that neo-cons planned this financial calamity. And certainly, the federal gov't taking an ownership stake in financial institutions is inconsistent with conservative values.

"Obviously, some libs are blinded by their hatred for Bush and it has eaten away at the part of their brains that control reasoning."

Hey, FWT...I don't know about Twinpac, but I know for certain that Doc's brain has been long destroyed by that tofu, bean sprouts and latte regimen he follows out there where he lives. Twinpac, judging by his name, might have imbibed a lotta twelve packs. In any case, they are devoted apostles of the Obamessiah and are not worthy of logical discussions. They will worship The One regardless and fall in lockstep with the Speaker of the House because she declared him, "..."a leader that God has blessed us with at this time."

Tell me, how can anyone reason with people like these?....and THESE?

That's not what Nancy Pelosi thinks. She says God has blessed you with a leader. Are you not convinced?

Funny!

"In the first place, they don't have the capabilities and in the second it makes no sense to destroy GOP chances this year and even jeopardize their filibuster power."

But you forget on important fact, the neocons are not just evil they are also incredibly incompetent. They planned the melt down but they thought it would occur in February, right in the lap of the Dems and Obama. As in most things they got it wrong and it landed in Dubya's own lap.
If they didn't plan it they certainly did everything they could to make it happen then without planning, plenty of economists predicted it exactly as it happened.

what are conservative values?

Bush was elected 2 terms and he is a supposed conservative. So I guess "conservative values" are spending more, increasing our debt, class warfare (Katrina)? I do not know.

I guess "liberal values" are balancing the budget, growing our economy, and creating jobs (Clinton)?

Im confused.

Christopher Hitchens is one of those journalists who were bamboozled into believing in the Iraq war at the start, and who believed the administration's spin about making the Middle East safer and more democratic.

His change of heart is therefore an admission that he was fooled, and it is logical that he would now be voting for Obama.

He sees this country (of which he became a citizen after 9/11) as on the road to that of the banana republic, where money has no real value and corruption is the rule.

He also sees that the McCain and Palin administration would take us down that road faster.

He is no dummy, and no "Muslim ass-licker" either.

The Republican party may win, but look who will propel them -- quite possibly the stupidest, most fearful, superstitious lot of uglies this side of Islamabad. These so called "Americans", wouldn't know what country first really meant if it was tattooed onto their grey matter. The Republicans represent the worst of us, our Mr. and Mrs. Hydes, unbridled base instinct and childish demands cloaked in the flag and hatted by spiritual retardation. They win. We lose. We can't let them win. The beast men and women must be sent back to the forest until they learn what it means to be human. Back into the kiln with these enesco figurines posing as human's. They not done yet, Lord. Keep them close.

The reason the right took Clinton down was he was too good. They saw a Democratic country and it scared them silly. So they used the so called "morals" bomb. It worked, in that it gave enough folks pause long enough to consider the failed human called Bush. Now, it's fear, 24/7 fear. The sign of a weakened people who live under the delusion that that fear will lead to further American greatness. Ha! Hitchens is no fool. He sees and knows what a Palin, yes, Palin, McCain is a minor actor in this fiasco, what a Palin win will do to the country he loves enough to have become a citizen of. Demean its history and fray its greatness right into the budget bin of history. What a choice we have here -- future or marginalization and irrelevancy. Oh, and one more thing: all these evangelicals... We're supposed to take these folks seriously? They say vote for McCain, but they also said vote for Bush... If they are getting their marching orders from God, then the great one is either a heck of a comedian, a horrible prognasticator, or, perhaps... not God at all...
You know, when you're looking for the Devil, look at the guy who keeps telling you he aint.

Great posts, King.

Lets all vote for ears and hurry us along our path to socialism. I guess if you are a corn eater and not a corn grower that is fine.

"Lets all vote for ears and hurry us along our path to socialism."

The Constitution forbids Bush having a third term, comrade.

Bush just announced a plan to give $250 Billion dollars of our money to the banks.

I think it was planned. I think it was part of the neo-cons scorched earth policy in their ongoing effort to destoy a country ...... blather, bullshit, nonsense

Vermin, it is testimony of the depth and breadth of your supidity that you are not alert to another possibility: However intent the GOPiggies are on destroying America, they are also fairly inept. It's just possible the task is beyond their ability to accomplish, even with their dedication to venaltiy and incompetence. Such are the burdens of creating a kakistocracy.

Think of it this way: A group plans on looting this country raw, but then they're dependent on hiring a host of people like you, Vermin. See what I mean? The "talent" is just too incompetent to get the job done.

Now, go back and whip up another batch of nose noodles for your Chinese masters.

Socialism. Socialism. Socialism. It's here folks, been here since before most of us on this thread were even born (so, I'm supposing.) But the balance was well managed, free market to socialized, until the apartchicks posing as patriots and enabled by the dim who bought into the whole Ringo Kid and his packed heat bullcrap mythos, seized control and delivered us the socialism they always desired. Yes, republican twits, your boys lied to you, still do. They use you like a frequently laundered cum rag, coming at you nice and fresh but with the same icky result every time. To any and all repubs here, this is what your fears have wrought. And if you think Palindrone is anything different than another clean cum rag coming at you, ha! She'll pump you up with Disney land main street hee haws, and trot out her human career props, but at the end of the day, she will do you wrong.
Because you're a rube who believes in something narrow and, in fact, really never existed in the first place. In the words of BOC -- my joke is an iron, and the joke is on you.

Lets all vote for ears and hurry us along our path to socialism. I guess if you are a corn eater and not a corn grower that is fine.

We could always vote for McNasty and hurry along the path to fascism and destruction.

Sometimes I wonder if what the repub faithful really want is Italy, 1930, by way of Kansas. Y'know, have some bullshit "new leader" tossing out nationalistic phrases cribbed from a see spot run coloring book, easily digestible by the dingos who believe an A-rab is running for President, while their country is nationalized. Well, s'all good if we can go beat up someone in the name of Jesus. Of course it is.

Almost everyone I know thinks that this recent drop in gasoline prices ($2.95 today) was engineered by Bush and the neocons to win the election. Then how do they explain the economic meltdown which is destroying GOP chances? Were they competent while they dropped oil prices and yet incompetent on the economy? Did they intend for the economy to implode after the election to completely destroy the GOP later? I am trying to think like DANNI but I feel like I am trapped in the house of mirrors with madmen, clowns and zombies.

FW,

if all the people you know think that the gas price reductions were engineered by Bush and the GOP in order to win the election then all the people you know are just as stupid as you!

This week another 5% drop in the demand for gasoline in US.

"Sometimes I wonder if what the repub faithful really want is Italy, 1930, by way of Kansas."

But at least the trains will run on time.

Seriously though, are you going to throw out the fascist dictator and not expect the like of stalin, lenin, hitler, pol pot and the like to be thrown back at you? Are the tactics employed by obama to pit the classes against each other so he can gain control of the blood lusting masses and the similarities between them and the aforementioned socialist/communist dictators lost on you?

"I am trying to think like DANNI but I feel like I am trapped in the house of mirrors with madmen, clowns and zombies."

Isn't it great? That's why it's always so entertaining here on the DR. It wouldn't be any fun at all without all our little leftist-socialist friends here. I only wish we had video so we could SEE them. I think a bunch of them can be seen here:

I think the bald guy with the beard is Doc_Sarvis.

www.zombietime.com

Almost everyone I know thinks that this recent drop in gasoline prices ($2.95 today) was engineered by Bush and the neocons to win the election.

Why IS gas cheaper all of a sudden? I find that phenomenon VERY interesting indeed. Seeing how just a few weeks ago there was a "shortage" and then suddenly now we have a "surplus".

Does anyone believe America suddenly stopped driving in one week and this has led to a drop in demand?

So what is it? Sure looks like an artificial manipulation of the price to me. As for Bush being behind it... well, he just is not that smart or powerful by himself...the Neocons on the other hand as a group just might be...especially if you include the CEO's of Big Oil in that group.

My pet theory is that the CEO's recognizing that the "tide" of public opinion is turning against them suddenly realized that they may have just killed the golden goose and have "loosened" the taps at the refineries. Congress should look into this but they are too busy being on vacation.

Interestingly also is OPEC's plan to cut production to try and stem the bleeding and force a shortage again... don't you just love these guys?

When will we take control of our own energy needs in America so we are not beholden to these creeps?

www.msnbc.msn.com

Salamandagator -- are you saying Obama is a Pol Pot? Please. The guy is a liberal capitalist who realizes that we can't prosper as a nation if the power and advancement afforded by opportunity and ability to strive is in the hands of the few at the expense of the many.
We cannot, and will not, compete if we are bogged down by generations of those unable to afford the best education, and, yes, health care. Health and smarts, in a silly way of saying it, that's the only way we can lead globally, which I, this east coast liberal, believes we should. American leadership through innovation in science, the business, the arts, with a kick ass military lest anyone try to fuck with us (put into play honestly and with the countries best interests, truly, at heart). The repubs are all about the dead, dead ways of seeing, dead ways of being, dead. The true zombies. Yeah, they're dead, they're all messed up... Kill the brain (what's left of it) you kill the ghoul. That said, it's surely a knee slapper watchin' day player zombie Billy Kristol and his play pals at Fox writhing about in dismay. Good stuff.

King.....the Repubs are truly shook. They realize that they will no longer be able to use the middle class for their gains, nor will they be able to suppress the American Dream from the underclass.

They will get what they deserve....KARMA.

I hope this depression strips the status quo conservatives of their wealth, and we see a national redistribution of wealth.

For a very long time, the neocons and repubs used the agenda of conservative family values to uphold their agenda of imposing extremely fascist fiscal policies. It blew up in their face. Yes, the underclass is too to blame for this economic recession. However, the Repubs have long promoted "personal responsibility"....so what about the Lenders or Banks responsibility to loan responsibly? They will argue that it does not apply in this case.

From their argument they imply that spending more, creating bigger deficits, and slashing jobs are all conservative policies.

Basically what im sayin is....the agendas of an elite few cannot apply to the general population (i.e. deregulation of markets)...if it does...then we will have another recession.

DONNERBOY,

The drop in oil and gas prices could not be caused by the drop in demand, that would be too boring and conventional. You are correct, there must be some convoluted conspratorial explanation.

Report back to area 51 for further instructions.

Im confused.

News flash?

"Hitchens needs another drink..

#28 | Posted by MURPHY "

TOBILLIOS ARRIBA!!

AK PATEL: Responsibility for the mess abounds from the personal sort -- yes, if you can't afford it, don't buy it -- to the sort of 19th century economic policies that'd make Commodore Vanderbilt and his gilded brood up at Newport proud as it keeps the few in the money and the rest out. And yeah, Politicians for the most part are the cuckolds of the corrupt, yet often useful pests who, on a good day, when their hearts match their minds and their desires are sweetly ice creamed by humility, can do some good. So, yeah, Dems, Repubs, lots of blame. But frankly, I don't like a government sponsored redistribution of wealth. I get a sour taste when I hear the phrase... redistribution...So Maoist in tone, and Mao was a mass murdering, dehumanizing, fermented shred of chicken dung, as were any and all communist leaders of the last century, in thoughts and philosophy if not deeds, devils all who used mankind and its nature as some sort of sick science project. May the commie shits be choking on their own bile and shit for eternity... So, yeah, redistribution of wealth, NOT. But... a government sponsored doctrine of fairness and protection in the market place of finance, ideas and education, yes. That's effen paramount if we're going to stay competitive, in leadership, and strong enough to defeat the superstitious plug uglies and their silly, yet destructive my God is better than your God chant (to the tune of the old Ken-L ration commercial, of course) -- you know, the ones from Islamabad and Idaho.

"re you saying Obama is a Pol Pot?"

No i'm saying that if you want to make comparisons of mccain to a terrible dictator then you might as well draw the same conclusions about obama. I think you would have to be delusional to fail to see the socialist tenancies of obama and if we are going to use hyperbole then i think my own comparisons are far more reasonable the mccain to Mussolini. Frankly as tinfoil as it sounds i am starting to see the similarities in the way obama is inciting jealousy and rage in the lower classes. We have seen the same speeches before, we have heard the same ideas and it never has resulted in anything but a terrible period for mankind.

King

You are right. The government has its duties when it comes to keeping the economy stable.

-A form of wit that is marked by the use of sarcastic language and is intended to make its victim the butt of contempt or ridicule.

The Republican death rattles grow louder. Some may liken it to the throwing around of pure shit, hoping that something sticks somewhere. To others it's merely a dog emerging from the water and shaking himself without much caring who gets wet. herm

Salamandagator: Sir, or madam, yes, I'm using hyperbole and having a grand time at it between writing copy for processed meats and cheeses. Now, I never said McCain was a Mussolini. I was surmising that the raw meat and small yellow bus faction of the republican party would most probably like one -- as long as God, flag, main street, and the troops were mentioned at least 10 million times per second. McCain, I believe, has real honor and real love of country, though darkly obfuscated, within him. But he sold himself to the worst -- the Kristols, Roves and the beast folk they so arrogantly and shamelessly manipulate. They want Palin. McCain just wants to die knowing he reached his ultimate goal, being President. And the fact that he would take the chance of passing the culmination of that goal onto this, and this is said with all acrimony not for who she might be, but for the pride in ugliness and incuriousness which she promotes, onto this half-person known as Sarah, tells me John McCain has died inside. As for Obama dangerously promoting jealousy and rage in the lower classes... He isn't. The previous 8 years are. (Now, not to put it all on Bush, this has always been a country favoring the rich; but this human stain certainly did raise the rancor) Why are policies which favor the few at the expense of the many called good business; but a righteous calling out on those policies and a demand for a truly equal playing field called class warfare? Kind of Orwellian, I'd say.
The true elite manipulating their hard working foot soldiers once again. Real class war fare is the fuck you very much policies of those who've been trying to reverse any and all gains and remnants of the new deal for the past 70 years, those flesh wearing demerits who put w into office twice, who want to drown our infrastructure in a bath tub, who are responsible for the thousands of deaths of young American men and women in a land they should never have set foot on. Those bastards are the scum who have been, and are dead set on continuing to, perpetuate class warfare. And now... both sides of the unwashed -- the superstitious vs the secular -- are now rising and claiming their arms. Some conservative dweeb said we may be entering a "cold civil war". The dweeb is probably right. Luckily, innovation, intelligence and humaness will win out. It always does in the long term. Dark days ahead for the party once known as republican.

I guess it wouldn't do any good at all to mention to Danni that McCain attempted to fix this problem 3 years ago but Obama shot it down because Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae WERE NOT in trouble according to Obama. Not to mention that a member of the oversight committee, Barney Frank, was having a gay affair with the CEO of one of the companies at the time. Which can be debated that Frank was unduely influenced by the affair. Nothing wreaks in all that mud does it Danni?

I suppose Danni would say "So what, a member of the oversight committee having an affair with the CEO of the company his committee was overseeing." To me, it wreaks of integrity issues from the start not to mention an ethical issue. Apparantly Democrats don't see anything wrong at all with that picture but it wreaks as bad as a supervisor/subordinate relationship with favoritism prominently displayed.
