In Minnesota, Al Franken, who long trailed in the polls and was once written off by many observers, now seems to be surging ahead of incumbent GOP Sen. Norm Coleman in several polls.

It's always been weird in a bad way that the fake Norm Coleman should have been the Senator to follow Paul Wellstone in Minnesota. Whatever your politics the contrast between the two couldn't be clearer.

It would be fitting if Coleman's career ended because the expensive suits that were, along with his hair and teeth, so central to his self-image should turn out to have been acquired outside of the accepted norms of gift acceptance.

I hear he's rethinking his campaign and considering pulling all his negative ads. We can only hope it's too little, too late.

Electoral-vote.com has an interesting take:

"Another upset appears to be in the making in NY-29 where the Democratic challenger, Eric Massa, is ahead of incumbent Randy Kuhl (R) 49% to 42%. Kuhl hasn't done anything wrong and his district is R+5. He just happens to be a Republican in a year when that is a bad thing to be. One can only wonder what is going on in the other R+5 districts that haven't been polled."

This could be quite an election. It's not all good news IMHO. There are going to be some Democrats that aren't winning because they deserve to win, based on experience, capability, job requirements, etc. but because they aren't Republicans. I generally prefer those that are more honest, competent and aligned with my goals over party.

Blue, perhaps so:

[Norm] Coleman told reporters that he would not be appearing at a planned rally with McCain this afternoon. Could it be McCain's sliding polling numbers in Minnesota? His attacks on Obama? Coleman said he needs the time to work on suspending his own negative ads.

"Today," he said, "people need hope and a more positive campaign is a start."

This Franken ad is great, too.

THIS is hope.

It's hope_381773a.jpg to be exact.

Fact: The pilot stalled the aircraft on approach.
I remember dissecting the thing at FlightSafety.
It was either suicide (~0%) or stupidity (~99.99999999999%).

Glad I sent Al twenty (ten?) California bucks, We need laughs badly today. herm

on the one hand i think it's sad that we are putting celebrities in office , but on the other hand they cant do any worse than the politicians.

BOOM---BILLO'S HEAD EXPLODES!!!!!

Zat should know--he dissected the WTC attacks and came up with jet fuel melting steel six weeks later, just like the 911 Commission---soooo watch your step binky.

Send in the clown, send in the clown....

Al Franken's qualifications are certainly 'top shelf'.

Be Well.

If I were Franken, I'd start thinking about taking buses, trains or automobiles. God knows how risky it is to be taking planes while a Bush is in office. (wink, wink)

"celebrities ... cant do any worse than the politicians."

So we unseat all the politicians and replace them with celebrities and normal folks like you and me. Then suddenly, lo and behold, the celebrities and normal folks ARE politicians ... herm

Al Franken? There's someone I've honestly never had a disagreement with (aside from his support of Obama). He seems to be a true liberal almost entirely devoid of the bullshit double standards I've seen so much of in the Democratic party lately.

...though truth be told I haven't read anything he's said or done since 2006, so he _could have_ severely changed since then. I'm hoping not.

I'm sorry, I don't get where you're coming from.

You quickly forget the Republicans were 'fiscally responsible', Bush was a 'unitor', and would never 'put our troops in harms way without a clear exit strategy'.

The GOP have been the party to do the exact opposite of everything they say they stand for.

...I'm... not a Republican, AU. I'm an Independent, who until earlier this year was a Democrat. Put that in mind and then reread my post; that should clear up the perspective a bit.

Franken sucked as a comedian

He sucked as a writer

And he really sucked as a radio host

The Senate will be a whole new way for him to succk

Minnesota deserves Franken, They are all dumber than rocks

Considering the fact that he's infinitely more successful that you'll ever hope to be, that doesn't say much fer yer pathetic existence.

Why do you believe so? Can you offer any reason except your own personal dislike of his politics?

Last I checked, Franken won an Emmy for his comedy. That's a pretty strong argument that he didn't suck as a comedian.

Last I checked he wrote several bestsellers. And, unlike say.. Limbaugh, there was no ghostwriter involved. That's a pretty strong argument that he didn't suck as a writer.

Last I checked he had a radio show that lasted a little more then three years, and then left it not because it was canceled, but to run for this office. Plus, I recall something about it winning some kind of award from the IRPP. That's a pretty strong argument that he didn't suck as a radio host.

Now, bearing in mind the fact that he has undeniably achieved high in all three of these things according to his peers and the people, by what measure does he "suck" at doing these things?

I don't like Limbaugh one bit, but he sure doesn't "suck" as a radio host. He's very good at it, in fact.

Given Al's history and intelligence, I think he will _excel_ in this position.

Libby Dole will join Coleman in the junk heap of the GOP.

Thanks George......

And Mitch McConnell as well..

Do you know what 60 means.
