Older Americans with investments are among the hardest hit by the turmoil in the financial markets and have the least opportunity to recover. "I can't cash anything because the value has deteriorated so much that I would lose money," said retiree Mary O'Connell, 76, whose investment in Bank of America has lost a third of its value this year.

There's alway's cat food....

Nothing wiped out but our lives. Move along now. herm

Chill- Is cat food good enough for your mama, or were you only referring to someone elses mama, but not your own? Way to bring something to the table.

Bah. They should hurry up and die and decrease the excess population.

Old people are drains on resources because they consume without producing. If not for the fanatical religious morality that has been imposed on us by the far right, we would do the proper thing and require mandatory "human recycling" once people outlive their usefulness. This would a.) allow us to restore some sense of balance to the national budget and b.) de-allocate resources that are currently misappropriated to caring for the "living dead."

Hopefully when Barack Obama is elected, he will have the courage to do something about the incredible burdgen caused by the senior citizen population of this country.

I should get a job writing these stavdard liberal boilerplate pieces. I could put my keyboard on auto-pilot. The next line in this article should be: "Minorities and women are hurt the most by (fill in the blank)".

will they will still vote for mccain?
further increasing the effect of the economic mess on themselves.
probably

Obama's trying to scare them into voting for him.

Well, if they voted for Bush...twice (and it's more likely than not)...I have little sympathy. At least there's only a little gay marriage to tolerate (or not...).

Ah, forget about the economy, the right opposses gay marriage and abortion and has a direct line to the interpretation of the holy words.

That is more important ain't it? Oh, and I forgot, Obama is Black.

So, vote for McStupid and feel good about your cat food diet while we are mismanaged into the ground.

Red Sox Suck

RedSoxSuck, It was a joke, A few weeks ago there was a thread on older Americans buying more cat food because of recent economic down turn. Sarcastic... PS, my mother died of breast cancer 5 years ago... Bag of douche waste...

Hopefully when Barack Obama is elected, he will have the courage to do something about the incredible burdgen caused by the senior citizen population of this country.

Soylent Green? It's like cat food, right?

"Obama's trying to scare them into voting for him."

hahah funny
mccain is the fear tactic king

keep lying to yourself
thats why the economy is in a mess and the usa is in two wars that have lasted 5 years and are far from over.

you keep ignoring that your republican leadership
have no idea whats going on and think that their hardheaded black and white vision is right.

narrow leadership leads to bad results
proven by bush/mccain

keep lying to yourself

----

Perhaps you should check some of Obama's ads and words in the past few days.

He tells Social Security recipients their money would now be in the stock market under McCain's plan. False.

----

I'm not a Republican...I'm not voting for McCain or Obama. They both suck.

Pirate, telling someone true bad news is not fear-mongering.

heres hoping that someone tells the seniors about the LIES that obama likes to tell them
worst one was the other day when he told a group of them that if mccain had had his way all of their social security would be gone because of the market stuff when IN FACT.........they would not have been able to put a dime in the market under his privatize plan for social security. I believe I read that if you were born before 1950 that you couldnt do it.
but shit like that doesnt matter to obama........

just play that FEAR CARD

Pirate, telling someone true bad news is not fear-mongering.

----

Uuuuummmm....did you see the "False" part?

"they would not have been able to put a dime in the market under his privatize plan for social security."

What an idiot. The current workers fund the current retirees. The retirees themselves don't have a dime in the system. It is the current workers whose monies, currently funding the SS system, would be in danger, threatening the current recipients.

well pirate
its hard to tell
mccain changes his plan every 4 days
at one time
he WAS for privatized social security in the stock market
what a fiasco that would have been

"LIES that obama likes to tell them"

you mean like the lie that obama is to blame for the econmic mess

thats quite a doozie that mccain said
there is only one lie that matters

the lie to yerself that mccain would be good for the usa

The Second Coming

Turning and turning in the widening gyre

The falcon cannot hear the falconer;

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

The best lack all conviction, while the worst

Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;

Surely the Second Coming is at hand.

The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out

When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi

Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert

A shape with lion body and the head of a man,

A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,

Is moving its slow thighs, while all around it

Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again; but now I know

That twenty centuries of stony sleep

Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,

And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,

Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

What an idiot. The current workers fund the current retirees. The retirees themselves don't have a dime in the system. It is the current workers whose monies, currently funding the SS system, would be in danger, threatening the current recipients.

look here dickweed.

I KNOW how the motherfucker works

and you PROVE my point that he lied to them because THATS what he told them according to wire service reports......

klifferd

mccain is much preferable to the usa than a european socialists...

"I KNOW how the motherfucker works"

Obviously, you don't. Especially if you don't believe current retirees benefits are at risk, and would be even more at risk if McCain and Bush had privatized Social Security.

look....lets try this again

in mccains plan, they would have NOT BEEN ALLOWED TO change it because of a violate market
is that REALLY That hard to understand or am I not being specific enough

Of course he knows, Danforth. He just has to completely distort what Obama correctly said, that current retirees benefits are at risk. They are the same people who said Reagan "saved" Social Security, remember.

But he feels better if he can call you a dickweed. That's about it. So little left to be a bushlover about. Maybe he should change his name to dickweeder.

Obama's Social Security Whopper
September 20, 2008
Updated: September 22, 2008
He tells Social Security recipients their money would now be in the stock market under McCain's plan. False.

This is what fact check wrote:
That's untrue. All current retirees would be covered by exactly the same Social Security benefits they are now under what the Obama campaign likes to call the "Bush-McCain privatization plan," which Bush pushed for unsuccessfully in 2005.

But that's not what Obama said. Obama didn't say their benefits would be changed. He said their money would be in the stock market, and that's true.
When I pay into social security, my money doesn't go into a private account for me, it goes to the payments of current retirees. When I retire my payments will come from future workers.

So if my money had instead started going to Wall Street and it had been invested in the subprime mess, my money would be gone, and not available to pay current retiree benefits. It's all one big pile.

So Social Security would need a bailout as well to keep benefits unchanged, and God knows what that would cost. And Social Security would be at extreme risk.

What Obama said is true.

Obama didn't say their benefits would be changed

----

Actually, he is. See the other factcheck.org article.

How about getting all drains out of government including welfare receipents, people on food stamps, unemployment, politicians and their expenses, money to foreign countries, money to fund wars and every entitlement known man? No drains...balanced budget.

Those who are retired should not be in the stock market. Their money should be in a very low risk investments. It's people under 50 who should have their money invested mostly in higher risk stocks and mutual funds. Take any ten years of time, including the Great Depression, and the stock market has always gained in value.

Finally, where are the hearings? NOBODY in politics wants hearings because people on both sides of the aisle are to blame! Much like the Enron hearings were dropped when Dems won the election the following year.

"the stock market has always gained in value."

Is that why every prospectus has the disclaimer that past performance should not be read as an guarantee of future performance?

The key word is "has". Obviously nobody can predict the future, but it is unlikely that something will happen in the future that did not happen similarly in the past.

"unlikely that something will happen in the future that did not happen similarly in the past." - Median1

Yep, like a depression or a recession. Which can last a decade (like in the 1930s) or cause a govt to implode (like Germany in the 1920s).

I could get on board with some aspects of this idea. Maybe we could build camps to send them to. We could expand Gitmo to hold the leeches until we execute them. There was a news story today that said abortions were at a 30 year low... this needs to be reversed. Ted Rall had an excellent piece in which he made a case that abortion should be mandatory for teenage pregnancy because it ruins at least 3 lives (mother, father, baby) and possibly more. What's going to be the burden on the state for Baby Trig? Caribou Barbie should have done the proper thing and aborted him.

I'm 60 years old, retired, travelling all over the world and enjoying life. I have paid taxes all my life and currently paying about $22,000 a year on my retirement and other passive income. If you haters keep your nose clean and invest wisely you can become a wealthy retiree also. Just hope and pray you can get there. You may be eating cat food at forty.

herm - you come live with the nancster family - we'll take good care of you! i love contraries.

"I'm sixty years old, retired, traveling all over the world and enjoying life."
And screw everybody else. Good for you.

Older Americans who did not take care to protect themselves. Bummer

I am sitting fine......

I am sitting fine......

Well fuck it then.

Double the bailout. Vato'll take care of it.

I should not pay for you to be on welfare your whole life.

I am really glad that my retirement is based on GBP right now.

Of course the older Americans are hit harder, that is the exact money the the fed control elites were after.

They are just a little angry they couldn't get social security at the same time as the 401s.

I am 78, and i want to know if I should commit suicide now. At what age will you commit suicide? Are your parents still burdening you by living? They didn't teach you respect, that I know.

greedy pos

To,"knows too much" As a senior, I would like to explain to some of you all-knowing people why we are struggling.
When we worked years ago, we may have brought home $65.00 a week. We worked a lot harder than the people do today, and we didn't have all the appliances to make life easier.
It took us a long time to save $100.00. At the end of our working days, we find that what we thought was plenty and then some, we find that after bread jumped to over $2.00 a loaf, milk $4.00 a gallon and so on, our savings were depleted. I would also like to point out to you, that FDR gave us Social Security, and thank you, God. We paid into that for years and so now you criticize us for living!
We did not have the education that government pays for now. Our homes were modest and comfortable. We didn't all HAVE to have these over-priced monstrocities that you have now. We used common sense that seems to have disappeared in this age.
We did not give you this mess that the country is in, You gave it to us. Some of us are ready to go, but it is not up to you, it is up to God.

Disgusted -

Your post touched me more deeply than any I have read on here in a very long time.
Believe me, not everyone is so shallow and has such disrespect and no concern for our elderly.

After all, you were part of the "Greatest Generation" -- those who survived the Depression and fought in WW II and helped to make our country great. Without your generation so many of these smartasses who continually make jokes at the expense of the elderly by mocking their medical needs and dependence on Social Security would likely not even be here -- at least not with the freedoms we have today.

It used to be, years ago, that younger generations respected their elderly and heeded their advice and wisdom garnered from a lifetime of experience. Many other countries still hold their elderly in esteem. Not so much today in this country where so many shallow people value "youth" above all else.

But time passes quickly, quicker than they know, and soon they too will also find themselves among the elderly with all the same needs and concerns. Let's hope, if and when they reach your age, these people who so often mock the elderly might themselves receive more respect and understanding from their younger generations than they afford you and other seniors today. I am sometimes shocked at the way the elderly are so often mocked and ridiculed on here.
