Robert Kennedy Jr. wants to know who else is on Sarah Palin's reading list after she quoted "avowed racist" Westbrook Pegler, who once called for the the assassination of Bobby Kennedy and lamented that Giuseppe Zangara bullet had missed Franklin Roosevelt and instead hit and killed Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak.

A writer observed: "We grow good people in our small towns, with honesty, sincerity, and dignity." I know just the kind of people that writer had in mind when he praised Harry Truman.

that is the quote from Palin's speech

the writer is: Westbrook Pegler

en.wikipedia.org

he referred to Truman as a "thin lipped hater"

is that the type of praise for Harry Truman?

look at who she is quoting and tell me this is not a hard right wing hater

Good find Johnny Hotsauce. Either Palin quoted Pegler without knowing anything about him or else she must agree with him. I'm sure Sean Hannity will get to the bottom when he interviews her.
They are allowing her off the leash to go be interviewed by Hannity, I'm sure it will be a tough interview. Riiiight.

I am absolutely positive the people who wrote her speech knew exactly what she was going to say:

www.slate.com

"Pegler's unyielding disregard for "the least inhibition of political correctness" if Buckley had offered examples of that steadfastness: his assertion in November 1963 (at the height of the civil rights movement) that it is "clearly the bounden duty of all intelligent Americans to proclaim and practice bigotry"; his embrace of the label racist, "a common but false synonym for Nazi, used by the bigots of New York"; or his habit of calling Jews "geese," because they hiss when they talk, gulp down everything before them, and foul everything in their wake.

every jewish american should be fully aware of who palin is quoting and how that would impact her world views.

Oh ho ! NOW you have her by the short hairs...LOL.

her "goose" is cooked.

actually kerrin your sarcasm is accurate

unfortunately most americans will miss or ignore the connection.

she is quoting an avowed racist and anti-semite.

that is not meanigless. it is a subtle hint to the right wing whackos as to where she comes from.

would you be honest and tell us what your response or rush's or hannitys response would be if biden or obama quoted a radical fringe left winger in his speech?

truthhurts

instead of trying to reason with these partisan wack jobs

just send it out to all your jewish friends

the jewish community is good at word of mouth spreading of information.

lets see how they like this.

good idea

several of my neighbors are jewish and at least one is active at his synagogue.

of course I live in NJ and there is not much chance of Mccain winning here, but this should be prominent in criticism of mccain/palin

yea they will tell their relatives all over the usa.

maybe florida??

hey I can only do what i can do. get the word out.

"maybe florida??"

Congressman Wexler or Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz would be able to get the info to most of the Jewish community here in Florida. I will try to email it to them. Seems the least I could do.

Let's see ...13 words in a speech or ... a 20 year association with a pastor who writes ...

" The Israelis have illegally occupied Palestinian territories for almost 40 years now. It took a divestment campaign to wake the business community up concerning the South Africa issue. Divestment has now hit the table again as a strategy to wake the business community up and to wake Americans up concerning the injustice and the racism under which the Palestinians have lived because of Zionism."

Does anyone really believe that Sarah knows a Fascist from a Socialist, a Jew from a Gentile, a Sunny from a Shittie? Indeed, does anyone have proof that Sarah can read? herm

Let me refine that. She apparently CAN read teleprompters. herm

She has a subscription the 'O' (oprahs magazine) but it has lot's of pictures.

kerrin

palin used the words her self
probably didn't even know where the quote came from cause she's just the regurgitator of the republican machine.

again comparing apples to oranges.

Not really all that far apart Kliffy.

Like you said... she very well was just reading words tossed in by a speech written by someone else.

The writings and philosophy of this person may be reprehensible...but the thirteen words in the speech "We grow good people in our small towns, with honesty, sincerity, and dignity." are not .

Let's see... maybe she can denounce the guy and then under pressure state her rejection.

article.nationalreview.com

its very far apart

i'm not going into rev. write thing cause the man is old and lived through some crap.
he's going to be jaded

just like you let pass mccains gook comment

obama didn't say what rev. write said
palin said what she said
mccain said what he said

its very very different.

Fascist writer Westbrook Pegler, an avowed racist who Sarah Palin approvingly quoted in her acceptance speech for the moral superiority of small town values, expressed his fervent hope about my father, Robert F. Kennedy, as he contemplated his own run for the presidency in 1965, that "some white patriot of the Southern tier will spatter his spoonful of brains in public premises before the snow flies."

Wow. So was including Pegler in her acceptance speech code words to someone about something? Is she secretly calling for or at least condoning the assassination for Democratic presidents and/or Democrats running for that office?

she is quoting an avowed racist and anti-semite.
You mean she quoted Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. Wow, I didn't know she liked him. Wow.

obama didn't say what rev. write said
palin said what she said
mccain said what he said

its very very different.
Only to a twisted mind full of hate.

Palin didn't write the speech, and I doubt she knew what she was saying. I bet the speech writer and the McCain campaign did though.

Interest in Pegler was recently revived when Republican Vice-Presidential nominee Sarah Palin quoted him in her acceptance speech at the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota. "We grow good people in our small towns, with honesty and sincerity and dignity", she said, a Pegler quote that also appeared in the book "Right From the Beginning" by Pat Buchanan. She did not acknowledge Pegler by name, merely citing 'a writer'.[4] The speech was written by Matthew Scully, a senior speech writer for George W. Bush.[5]

Following the Palin acceptance speech New York Times columnist Frank Rich provided an analysis of the political significance of quoting Pegler. Mr. Rich noted that "Pegler was a rabid Joe McCarthyite who loathed F.D.R. and Ike and tirelessly advanced the theory that American Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe ("geese", he called them) were all likely Communists."[6] He suggested that Palin's use of a quote from "once powerful right-wing Hearst columnist Westbrook Pegler" was intended to send a subtle but unmistakable signal to far right wing supporters. [7]

from wikipedia

from Rich's column:

Palin, who lies with ease about her own record, misrepresented Peglers too. He decreed America was done for-- after Truman won a full term in 1948. For his part, Truman regarded the columnist as a guttersnipe,-- and with good reason. Pegler was a rabid Joe McCarthyite who loathed F.D.R. and Ike and tirelessly advanced the theory that American Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe (geese,-- he called them) were all likely Communists.

Surely Palin knows no more about Pegler than she does about the Bush doctrine. But the people around her do, and they will be shaping a Palin presidency. That they would inject not just Peglers words but spirit into their candidates speech shows where theyre coming from. Rick Davis, the McCain campaign manager, said that the Palin-sparked convention created a whole new Republican Party,-- but what it actually did was exhume an old one from its crypt.

www.nytimes.com

Palin didn't write the speech, and I doubt she knew what she was saying.

so she was either irresponsible or racist/anti-semitic

which is it?

so she was either irresponsible or racist/anti-semitic

which is it?

I think she is what some have been describing her to be: an empty vessel, a tabula rosa the Mccain campaign could program to do their dirty work. Either that or she is complicit, and either way she doesn't look good.

Wow. So was including Pegler in her acceptance speech code words to someone about something?

I've been wondering whether she was engaging in dog whistle politics, like Reagan choosing Philadelphia, Miss., as the place to start his general election campaign in 1980.

But Westbrook Pegler is such an obscure figure today that I can't see how quoting him without credit would mean anything to anybody.

Point taken, RCade, but if columnists like Frank Rich and Democrats like Robert Kennedy Jr. could figure it out, I'm sure there must be some in the Republican party who did as well. But I agree with you--not the rank and file.

To be fair she might be almost smart enough to tie her own shoes without drolling all over herself. I know I'm a terrible sexist for being critical of her and that one of you lifelong women's rights advocates will be along to put me in my place real soon, but I'm pretty sure that if you asked her about Westbrook Pegler she could tell you as much about him as she could tell "Charlie" about the bush doctrine. Everything about this half tard reminds me of the scene in anchorman when the teleprompter starts fucking up.

I will ask one question...were the thirteen words found to be offensive the day of or the day after her speech?

I see it as 13 words found by researchers pouring over her speech for several days trying to find a boo-boo.
After the BHO, Biden, and Mac borrowing of other words...I am pretty sure this is the case.
Got anything to convince me otherwise...dated like...right after her speech?

Mid-you're mistaking Wright for Mcsame's spiritual adviser, hagee. Nice to see the GPPers are equal opportunity haters though:

The San Antonio Express-News reported that Hagee was going to "meet with black religious leaders privately at an unspecified future date to discuss comments he made in his newsletter about a 'slave sale,' an East Side minister said Wednesday." The Express-News reported:

If a politician can never quote a "racist" then no politician can ever quote many of the people who signed the Declaration or the Constitution.

Westbrook Pegler was one of the most insightful observers of the American cultural, social, and political scene, and a man able to identify human foibles and pretensions, and report his observations to the reading public.

Kennedy on the other hand is a silver spoon dilettante, who is supported by treasure secured by a fortune founded on criminal activity, and a mediocre mind dispensing views that find an audience only because of his position, but which have no intrinsic worth, and indeed reflect his medicority.

The leftists have a playbook that attempts to use a group of words as mindless substitutes for thought. Semantics is used to bar inquiry into issues. "Fascist" is one of the words that is misused frequently, "racist" is another. Why these authoritarians even attempt to do what the Russians did with pictures, sterilize history. The USSR deleted functionaries from photos of the Politboro members reviewing parades after they lost power and exited in disgrace. We pretend that our cultural history is other than what it was.

The censors of American life are also historical revisionists and attempt to excise such brilliant works as those of Mark Twain from our culture because he had a character called "Nigger Jim" in his books even though the book portrayed the character positively. The word "nigger" was in common use, but those seeking to control and limit thought through revision of history, have made it a taboo, so euphemisms such as "the N word" are substituted for "nigger." These folks are trying to erase the reality of our history and development. Our language has been bowdlerized to accommodate the "new religionists'" concepts of heresy and blasphemy.

The heavy hand of oppression and suppression of thought is that of the left. Authoritarian rule if it ever comes to the United States will come from the left. Beware. Be vigilant.

Mark Twain wrote a book describing the american condition.

Pegler made it a habit of calling Jews "geese," because they hiss when they talk, gulp down everything before them, and foul everything in their wake.

pegler called himself a racist.

and palin admires him enough to use his words as a quote.

I don't think Palin admires him quite as much as Johnson does. But then, geese of a feather.....

she is quoting an avowed racist and anti-semite.

that is not meanigless. it is a subtle hint to the right wing whackos as to where she comes from.

So.. is she an anti-semite for quoting this guy, or is she pro-Jewish and anti-American for having an Israeli flag in her office?

How about the Democrats make up their damn minds which slur she should be painted with? because it sure looks to me like you're, quite literally, trying to have it both ways.

Did she quote racist rhetoric? No? Then what's the issue?

I'm an atheist who believes Jesus was nothing more than a man, but I quote him. Does that make me a Christian? No. I've quoted Marx before, too, because he did have some words of wisdom even if his communist ideas sucked. Does that make me a communist? No, it doesn't.

Tanning beds, funny names, non-racial quotes. The left is grasping at straws trying to discredit this woman. It's funny how much she scares them.

I'm not hearing a response yet. Which is it? Is she unpatriotically pro-Jewish, or is she an anti-semite?
