House Speaker Nancy Pelosi yesterday privately pushed Rep. Charlie Rangel to give up his chairmanship of the influential House tax-rules committee over his failure to disclose taxable income, the New York Post claims according to a "well-placed source."

.......Time To Go Charlie........

Didn't Dems run the table in 2006 by rightfully hammering the Republicans on ethics violations and for getting too big for their britches?

Did this kerosene and razor blade gargurler open his pie-hole in this regard?

Wow. Another corrupt black Democrat politician that's holding out on resigning, when he's clearly caught breaking the law. Go figure.

Amazing how you see stories about Palin's tanning bed on the front page, but a story about the Democrat Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee being asked to step down by The Speaker of the House for being a crook is relegated to the back page. Hmmm.........

Let's not forget the GOP hissy fit when they thought (*right*) that Obama declared Palin to be one of Porky the Pig's relatives.

As for Charlie Rangel, he should've stepped aside from his chairmanshp once he came under investigative scrutiny and not even considered exercising the chair's powers until when (and if) he was cleared.

Rangle's congressional seat is completely safe unless he's charged with something and he chooses to step down.

The people in his district would still be willing to vote for him. He's VERY popular.

He's VERY popular.

Yeah, but does he own many leather-bound books? Does his apartment smell of rich mahogany?

Have you ever seen the Hebrew Hammer? It was on CC yesterday.

He should step down. How can one be the head of the committee that handles taxation in this country, and be a tax cheat himself? I love how people blame their accountants in these situations - I call B.S. Charlie.

LOL... no haven't checked it out yet.

I wouldn't mind seeing Pelosi step down as well.

"Wow. Another corrupt black Democrat politician that's holding out on resigning, when he's clearly caught breaking the law. Go figure."

What does his color have to do with anything. Are we to believe that only black Congressmen have been implicated in various problems but not charged with crimes and then refused to resign???
Another episode of "white privelege."

I like Charlie. He's a real character.

Well, at least the Democrats are willing to clean up their own house. That's a good sign.

"I wouldn't mind seeing Pelosi step down as well.

Ditto.

He said he would pay the taxes that he owes. The guy made a mistake and admitted it, which is more than most politicians do. He's not trying to divert blame and he's not trying to escape. Just let the guy make it right and leave him alone.

Good job Nancy....now how about kicking off those impeachment hearings against the corrupt White House.

He also may have to account for why he didn't properly disclose the sale of a Washington, DC, home in 2000, the various values he placed on his former Sunny Isles, Fla., condo, and the wild fluctuations he recorded for his personal investments.

Here a crook, there a crook, everywhere a crook crook.

"What does his color have to do with anything."

I was thinking the same thing when I read his post.

"at least the Democrats are willing to clean up their own house."

Ummmm...there IS an election coming up...in what...56? days.

What does his color have to do with anything. Are we to believe that only black Congressmen have been implicated in various problems but not charged with crimes and then refused to resign???

Don't get your bonnet all off kilter, Danni. The guy has been hiding behind his skin color for years. Expect him to pull the race card out and slam it on the desk any minute now. You know it and I know it.

Oh by the way, nice job tossing in your own little bit of race-baiting at the end. You're just as bad.

"Amazing how you see stories about Palin's tanning bed on the front page, but a story about the Democrat Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee being asked to step down by The Speaker of the House for being a crook is relegated to the back page. Hmmm........."

Can't say I'm surprised. A story I posted on Biden pushing a law that directly benefited his lobbyist son never made it off the back page, presumably because the site needed room for 12 Palin threads.

What is with the bitching and moaning around here lately? Plus, this is on the front page now, morons. I am sure Rogers has other things to attend to throughout his day.

Rangle, Pelosi and Dodd. After all Dodd was on watch when the Fannine and Freddie thing started.

Here's a link for Dodd... He needs to go too.

MSNBC

Wow, we've gone from old white Repubs getting caught in bathroom stalls, to a rash of black pols getting caught in financial and ethical crisis. Obama better hope Rangle takes the offer... he needs this playing out over the next 2 months like he needs a hole in his hijab.

Sure and add to that the former Dem mayor of Detroit...

I hope you conservative posters realize Palin is in hot water for similar reasons; you may want to watch your rhetoric.

I hope you conservative posters realize Palin is in hot water for similar reasons; you may want to watch your rhetoric.

Charlie needs to step down and let a prompt clear and transparent investigation damn him or clear him-just like Palin wants to do with Troopergate.

Oh...

But seriously, Charlie-take a LOA and get this resolved.

NG, I wasn't talking about trooper gate. Once Palin releases her tax returns, this per diam issue is going to blow up.

Rangel is a crook plan and simple. No wonder Democrat Congressmen don't care about raising taxes because while the everyday peon has to pay taxes, cook Democrats like Rangel cheat their way out of paying taxes. Because Rangel is a Democrat, his tax cheating will mean nothing.

Repubs have Rangel to hang it on Pelosi's neck --- a talking point so long as dems keep defending Rangel not to resign his chairmanship.

Let's put it this way if any regular got caught like Rangel did they would just have to pay back taxes with interest most likely.

As in the eyes of the IRS he is in fact a regular citizen he is doing just that.

If the IRS is unwilling to make a criminal case out of this then he shouldn't have to resign.

Can't be chairman of Ways and Means of course. Which in case anyone has a clue about how congress works is a vicious penalty far worse than any tax penalty he pays. The man lost a major power position.

"Rangel is a crook plan and simple. No wonder Democrat Congressmen don't care about raising taxes because while the everyday peon has to pay taxes, cook Democrats like Rangel cheat their way out of paying taxes. Because Rangel is a Democrat, his tax cheating will mean nothing."

Hey UTASTAFF,

Know anyone who worked "under the table" or didn't report tips. Same shit. Knock of the sanctimonious shit for a change you are starting to sound like my old spinster third grade teacher with the glass eye.

This is nothing more than a lynching of a successful black man. He said he's going to make it right by paying back *everything* that he owes. Can you please put your nooses away?

"Know anyone who worked "under the table" or didn't report tips. Same shit. Knock of the sanctimonious shit for a change you are starting to sound like my old spinster third grade teacher with the glass eye."

Hey Furio,
Charlie Rangel is a ranking Democrat who heads the powerful House Ways and Means Committe. Just in case you clueless libs don't know, the Ways and Means Committee is the chief tax writing committe of the House of Representatives!!! Therefore, I think there is a little higher gravity to the level of trust and responsibility from Rangel cheating on his taxes than a random waitress who under reports tips. If you can't see that, I feel sorry for you. Apparently Rangel's tax cheaing is no big deal but Palin's tanning bed is. Typical libs!!!!

"Know anyone who worked "under the table" or didn't report tips. Same shit."

Yeah. That's what it's like.

""Know anyone who worked "under the table" or didn't report tips. Same shit."

Yeah. That's what it's like."

We are talking about $70k over 20 years. Something like earning $3k a year. ALL waiters and part-time gas pumpers cheat the IRS on far more.

also depending if he owned this property with a company he could have rolled the profits over every year in the company but by IRS standards would have to pay personal income tax on the rental income also known as "passive income" in a foreign corporation. It may also be possible he paid Dominican taxes but didn't realize he had to report on US as well. Supposedly he only owes the IRS $5k which would support this theory. MOST Americans abroad don't report their small earnings abroad after being foreign taxed mostly because they don't realize it.

Owning foreign companies or property is a pain in the ass. I know from experience. I'm sure UTASTAFF doesn't have these problems with his double wide and a $30k a year job.

Rangel was simply renting the place out enough to cover expenses and maintenance of the place not to make a profit or cheat taxes.

Utah, are you this upset over Palin not including the per diams in her taxes as well? It is essentially the same issue - not including benefits in their income.

They lynched Clarence Thomas and the dems and libs celebrated!

"Typical libs!!!!"

You mean like Phil Gramm?

At least Rangel's not creating policy that helps himself financially.

Maybe it's because the black electorate reelects black politicians who are convicted of felonies committed while in office. Do you remember the crack-smoking Mayor Marion Berry of Washington, D.C.? Do you remember Rep. Adam Clayton Powell? Whatever became of Rep. William Jefferson? Was he indicted? He's still serving. As I recall, even if disciplined, a Congressman, who is reelected is reseated, although he may lose the benefits of his seniority.

I happen to like Charley, think he's one of the nicer politicians. And he seems to be good-hearted.

but with the black constituencies, it seems to be "Different strokes for different folks" insofar as standards for maintaining political office is concerned after being tainted.

It's quite unfair at times because it seems to be a matter of how sly, cunning, and adroit you are. Remember Jaimie Gorelick, the high-minded #2 in Reno's Justice Department, the one who actually ran it, and who assiduously maintained a wall between foreign and domestic inqirieis to the point that her policies were enablers of attacks. Well, the story is that Jamie Gorelick somehow made some $75 million through interaction with Fannie Mae, was it, using her political influence.

There does seem to be "discrimination." This slick whitey skirts the law and becomes rich, while poor Charley may be nailed over peanuts after years of diligent service.

Taxman--Has Sarah released her tax returns to confirm that she did not pay taxes on the per diems?

So, Rangel made a mistake which he's admitted and wants to put right, and Chancy Nancy says he's got to go.

Whereas Bush and Cheney have stonewalled investigation after investigation, refused to cooperate, refused to admit anything in the face of overwhelming evidence, and they can stay.

What's wrong with this picture, Nancy?

At least Rangel's not creating policy that helps himself financially.

No you have Obama getting the second highest amount of donations from Fannie/Freddie (Dodd is the highest).

And Rangel ignores the laws that ultimately helps him financially.

---------------

The Dems insisted that the gov't push Fannie /Freddie to loan money to people who had no business getting a loan for a home.

Noble idea but with consequences since we find the economy suffering due to the home mortgage debacle, foreclosures, and investment banks holding the bag as they bought the packaged loans.

"Has Sarah released her tax returns to confirm that she did not pay taxes on the per diems?"

No. Sarah! has not released her tax returns.

The Dems insisted that the gov't push Fannie /Freddie to loan money to people who had no business getting a loan for a home.

It was Dubya that issued America's homeownership challenge to the real estate and mortgage finance industries.

Expanding Homeownership. The President believes that homeownership is the cornerstone of America's vibrant communities and benefits individual families by building stability and long-term financial security. In June 2002, President Bush issued America's Homeownership Challenge to the real estate and mortgage finance industries to encourage them to join the effort to close the gap that exists between the homeownership rates of minorities and non-minorities. The President also announced the goal of increasing the number of minority homeowners by at least 5.5 million families before the end of the decade. Under his leadership, the overall U.S. homeownership rate in the second quarter of 2004 was at an all time high of 69.2 percent. Minority homeownership set a new record of 51 percent in the second quarter, up 0.2 percentage point from the first quarter and up 2.1 percentage points from a year ago.

Can you imagine what Rangel would have said if a white guy had done this? I'm sick of this shit. Kick him out and let him get a job with Waste Management. Never mind. He wouldn't qualify to lift a goddamn garbage can.

"Can you imagine what Rangel would have said if a white guy had done this? I'm sick of this shit. Kick him out and let him get a job with Waste Management. Never mind. He wouldn't qualify to lift a goddamn garbage can."

You did graduate from high school? This is what happens when the under-educated masses post on DR.

What the hell does race have anything to do with any of this? I am really afraid of what some crazy racist will do if Obama is elected.

"No you have Obama getting the second highest amount of donations from Fannie/Freddie (Dodd is the highest).

Murphy: Right - are Obama and Dodd creating laws that help themselves financially? Directly? Like Gramm and McCain (Keating 5)? Taking money is only half of a corrupt equation.

To compare Rangel ignoring laws as being the slightest bit similar to creating law to his benefit is akin to saying a cop who works as a security guard for extra money is the same as a cop who sells drugs for extra money. Though it might be against the rules, it's not corrupt.

I don't think so. If it happens it will only be set up to look that way. There are many blacks who hate whites enough to kill, but you don't see it happening very much. The way you're talking, every white who spoke against blacks would have been shot.

But he won't and she won't do anything about it and so forth and so on.

Democrat - The Official Party of Corruption and Hypocrisy.

www.crewsmostcorrupt.org

17 out of 24 of the most corrupt in Congress are republican

Lets not forget the Swaggerts, Fallwels, Foleys, Craigs etc.. on the hypocracy side

And let's certainly not forget the models of corruption sitting in the White House.

Zulu- What world are you living in? This is 2008. Pay attention.

TN Independent, i do not remember swaggert and falwell being elected, the issue, now pay attention, is elected officials....not private individuals that happen to claim to be a member of a certain party. Looks like you cant pay attention to the thread, oh but bush is corrupt, yea, and he is not running for anything now either, neither is bill clinton, i get tired of hearing how he got a blow job in the "oral office" in partisan efforts to excuse present republican disgust too... get a new line, bush is out.

Rangel is scum, kick the guy out. He heads the committee that writes the tax code and then, oops, he cheats on his taxes.

This is almost as funny as the chairman of the banking committee, Chris Dodd, taking $165,000 from Freddie and Fanny to keep regulators off their backs. Oh by the way Obama was number two to Chris Dodd with a staggering $126,000 in just two years as a senator.

Damn, you guys need to get the log out of you own eye before you start pointing fingers at republicans.

Don't deflect the issue of corruption by pointing at other corruption. There are corrupt politicians on both sides of the aisle, so don't pretend that one side is pure and the other side is evil.

Republicans see this as a chance to get rid of one of the leading Dems, one who has been a thorn in their side. Plus, he's a black man, so the GOP can put another notch in their holster for successful blacks taken down. I suspect the GOP hasn't forgiven Rep. Rangel for trying to restore the draft to alleviate the military burden off the poor, black inner-city youth. These young people are given empty promises in exchange for being massacred for Bush-Cheney Oil Wars, Inc.

So essentially your saying she didn't pay taxes on per diem when you have absolutely no proof that she didn't? Whereas we have proof Charlie didn't pay his taxes.

Have you people ever heard of a W-2? Because even state government employees get them and they include per diem and any other taxable payments they received. Obviously, I can't figure out how she'd avoid paying said taxes.

Lonnie

Given most of what I've seen on this thread has been Charlie should not lose his position. Let's look at it in the right perspective.

If Charlie was a CEO of a company and got caught with his hands in the cookie jar, you'd be ok with him just paying back what he took without losing his job. That's freaking insane.

If your in charge of writing the tax code and pursuing those who don't pay their taxes, this becomes a ethics violation. Pure and simple. It has nothing to do with Republicans or Democrats. It's a trust violation. I'm just waiting for one of the lefties to say this is a conspiracy. It purely is not!

I hear ya -but I was responding to the line: "Democrat - The Official Party of Corruption and Hypocrisy." Nothing about elected officials. Looks like you cant pay attention to my line of thought. Sorry the detour tripped you up so much.

Your republican elected officials pander to these other 'non-elected' individuals to get their followers' votes. They ARE republicans, and certainly do represent the party which supports their hypocritical behavior.

It has nothing to do with Republicans or Democrats. It's a trust violation. I'm just waiting for one of the lefties to say this is a conspiracy. It purely is not!

crispee,

I guess your point is that it's ok to be a tax cheat as long as your friends support you? I wonder how Wesley Snipes feels about this? I'm sure he had friend's support too. I think he got spanked too. Although Wesley wasn't in charge of writing the tax code nor was he a member of congress.

Lonnie

I guess your point is that it's ok to be a tax cheat as long as your friends support you?

No quite the opposite. The point was the CBC will back any member regardless of the charges. Which is why Pelosi won't do a thing. Just like Jefferson.

So Speaker Pelosi won't demand anything out of fear that these guys will slap down the race card. Ingenius....NOT.

Lonnie

So Speaker Pelosi won't demand anything out of fear that these guys will slap down the race card. Ingenius....NOT.

You asked for a conspiracy and I gave you the CBC supporting Rangel. Just like they support Jefferson. If any member is ever charged they believe it is a conspiracy. Pelosi is an idiot and is not qualified to be elected a dog catcher much less a Congressional representative. Which is why their approval ratings are so high.

Seems Charlie also has a Florida problem.....

Alma Rangel bought the condominium in Sunny Isles Beach, Fla., for $335,000 in 2004 and sold it two years later for $405,000, records show.

On disclosure forms, Rangel valued the unit at between $50,001 and $100,000 in 2004. The next year, he valued it between $100,001 and $250,000.

In 2006, Rangel disclosed the condo sale and listed its value accurately. But he later recorded the transaction as occurring in 2007, with a value between $100,001 and $250,000.

Adding to the confusion, Rangel indicated that the condo was a rental property but had generated no rental income.

I am not as concerned about her paying taxes on the per diem, which she probably had to do, I am concerned about the Fraudulent aspect to claiming the per diem in the first place.

If she was not entitled to the per diem while she lived at home and she claimed it anyway that is Travel Voucher Fraud.

Voucher Fraud is a felony.
