Frank Rich: "Often my haste is a mistake," John McCain conceded in his 2002 memoir, "but I live with the consequences without complaint." Well, maybe it's fine if he wants to live with the consequences, but what about his country? Should the unexamined Sarah Palin prove unfit to serve at the pinnacle of American power, it will be too late for the rest of us to complain.

As The New York Times reported last Tuesday, Palin was sloppily vetted, at best. McCain operatives and some of their press surrogates responded to this revelation by trying to discredit The Times article. After all, The Washington Post had cited McCain aides (including his campaign manager, Rick Davis) last weekend to assure us that Palin had a full vetting process.-- She had been subjected to an F.B.I. background check,-- we were told, and the McCain camp had reviewed everything it could find on her.--

The Times had it right. The McCain campaigns claims of a full vetting process-- for Palin were as much a lie as the biographical details theyve invented for her. There was no F.B.I. background check. The Times found no evidence that a McCain representative spoke to anyone in the State Legislature or business community. Nor did anyone talk to the fired state public safety commissioner at the center of the Palin ethics investigation. No McCain researcher even bothered to consult the relevant back issues of the Wasilla paper. Apparently when McCain said in June that his vice presidential vetting process was basically a Google,-- he wasnt joking.

(more excerpts):

Given the actuarial odds that could make Palin our 45th president, it would be helpful to know who this mystery woman actually is. Meanwhile, two eternal axioms of our politics remain in place. Americans vote for the top of the ticket, not the bottom. And in judging the top of the ticket, voters look first at the candidates maiden executive decision, their selection of running mates. Whatever we do and dont know about Palins character at this point, there is no ambiguity in what her ascent tells us about McCains character and potential presidency.

He wanted to choose the pro-abortion-rights Joe Lieberman as his vice president. If he were still a true maverick, he would have done so. But instead he chose partisanship and politics over country. God only made one John McCain, and he is his own man,-- said the shafted Lieberman in his own tedious convention speech last week. What a pathetic dupe. McCain is now the man of James Dobson and Tony Perkins. The no surrender-- warrior surrendered to the agents of intolerance not just by dumping his pal for Palin but by moving so far to the right on abortion that even Cindy McCain seemed unaware of his radical shift when being interviewed by Katie Couric last week.

This and more can be found in Rich's excellent Op-Ed this morning at:

Palin and McCain's Shotgun Marriage - NYT

A reckless choice of an unknown (even to McCain) entity. In a presidential election the American public is owed more.

AU

Only sane people consider McCain's pick reckless.

But for the neo-cons whose governance is cloaked in secrecy by people who lurk behind the curtain, she's practically cardboard cutout perfect.

As a McCain VP, she'll soon be shuffled off to ribbon cutting ceremonies and state funerals.

Duped, so to speak, into thinking she'll actually be allowed to have an opinion on anything.

It won't take long for Palin to learn that her primary role as Veep will be making paperclip chains to wile away the hours.

Just one minute there buster....this paperclip making thing is not as easy as you seem to imply.

Sincerely,

Sarah

So McCain LIED about the existence of an FBI investigation?

I've got a different hit on Palin. I think she'll find a reason to resign in aboout one year if she is VP, and McCain will appoint someone he really wants. I think a carrot will be offered Palin, an offer she can't refuse.

When Wm Henry Harrison was elected the nation's 9th president, he was regarded as a rock solid war hero from the Battle of Tippecanoe. Though the oldest ever person elected to the presidency at the time -- he was in his late 60s -- most Americans thought he would live well into his old age. So, the campaign slogan, "Tippecanoe and Tyler too" did not tout the fact that John Tyler would be next in line of succession. Tyler was a patrician, pro-slavery, Virginian expansionist. Harrison was a war hero and a northerner. Tyler was an overture to the nation's and his party's right wing.

Well, 30 days after inauguration day, John Tyler became president. And then everything changed. At least Tyler had a distinguished Senate resume.

"At least Tyler had a distinguished Senate resume."

And he couldn't destroy the world at the touch of a button.

"I think she'll find a reason to resign in aboout one year if she is VP, and McCain will appoint someone he really wants. I think a carrot will be offered Palin, an offer she can't refuse."

I've been saying just about the same thing for the past couple days.

No one is expecting perfection from our political leaders --- but proven record, experience, and knowledge of running a healthy government.

Here's a delicious internet rumor,

Palin's son signed up for military duty in order to avoid conviction and juvenile detention for destroying the brakes on a school bus.

www.democraticunderground.com

....plus, the latest newsflash from Dems is that the young Palin is the father of his sister's baby.

Oh, and the baby will be born with two heads, one human, one alien.

Just two heads? Pity.

...ok, ok, they didn't say alien.......they reportedly said it is only the head of...........

a moose, so relax.

When you grow up in Wasilla, there isn't much to do 'cept play tag with the Palin girls, But, to her credit, there's all sorts of work in Wasilla, these days -- thee's working at Chez Subway, or those other world famous retailers following in the footsteps of Harrod's -- WalMart, KMart, Costco, Lowe's and Home EDepot. Progress has come to Wasilla -- big time!

.....and the Chicago unemployment situation is just fabulous.

THANK YOU SENATOR OBAMA!

Apparently when McCain said in June that his vice presidential vetting process was basically a Google,-- he wasnt joking.

Just what we need is another president that does not bother to do his homework.

McCain is a joke, but the mouthbreathing losers will support him come hell or high water.

In addition, I actually think I'd like Sarah Barracuda as a person. She's a bit too aggressive and opinionated for my tastes, but I love her story -- Girl who cannot get through high school eventually struggles away at it and gets done in 6 years, gets married to decent local guy, goes to church and decided to run for office speaking her principles (one of which is pro-life). Then becomes selection to be one heartbeat away from top office in the land to the oldest geezer ever to run for the highest office in the land.

It is a remarkable story, and she certainly taps the roots of the American dream -- that the frontier is endless, that there is a God we all believe in, that you can be a fan of guns and roses and God and never step on anyone's toes,

But, even though Mr. McSame has found the subliminal selling poit to make his ticket exciting, it's not enough. As much as I find the New/old Frontier Americans ticket compelling, my responsibility as a voter isn't shallow enough to pull the lever, punch the chad, tap the computer screen for a McSame/Palin neocon/theocon ticket. Not this year. Not with all teh mess that happened on the watch of the current batch of neocons and theocons.

"poit" s/b = point

.....and the Chicago unemployment situation is just fabulous.

THANK YOU SENATOR OBAMA!

things are tough all over, blame your boy prez skippy.

..he's not my boy and I'm not skippy, got it ted.

After all the twinkle dust of the RNC convention has settled the focus will be back on what the Bush Administration has done to our country the last 8 years, and the fact they'll continue those policies.

What I'm really amazed at is how the NeoCons have made Palin their "Moosiah" without knowing much about her other than she can shoot moose with a high powered rifle and talks a good talk who's facts are completely at odds with her actual record. Obama's been in the white hot spotlight for 19 months and we've heard nothing but lies and innuendo from the right all along.

Suddenly, after a little more than a week, the right is so sure America will vote McCain in because of his reckless pick of someone who's foreign policy experience is knowing Russia shares a border somewhere out in the middle of the Bering Straight.

Well, give it a couple of weeks. McCain's old, and Palin is smoke and mirrors. Also, don't forget Rush and Hannity practically called McCain the AntiChrist.

..he's not my boy and I'm not skippy, got it ted.

i was calling your boy bush "skippy"

try to keep up son.

I think all this stuff in the press about not adequately vetting Palin is just sour grapes on their part because McCain did not pass it by them first.

McSame picked Palin to appease the agents of intolerance without having to share the stage with the more popular Huckabee.

Now he's busy lying about her to the electorate.

Different day, same GOP.

Huckabee is extraordinary in the chaming department. His old world beliefs and ability to take direct criticism from Colbert & Stewart in good humor trumps Clinton.

"Obama's been in the white hot spotlight for 19 months and we've heard nothing but lies and innuendo from the right all along."

Are you serious? It wasn't until SNL made a mockery of the mistreatment of Hillary that it became obvious he was the press' darling. Fox was pushing the Wright deal a year ago before the press realized they better dig into it. If that would have come out earlier in the primary, he wouldn't have been on the ticket.

It's amazing how the OTHER half of the wit seems to think the New York Times IS a newspaper. Good try! Anything printed there just HAS to be true, I mean after all, it's NEW YORK, right?

Good thing the rest of the country just visits for a week or two, cause that shit is catching! It's like measles or worse yet Mumps, just stand there and it'll get you! That great orator once said, 'Stupid is as Stupid does!' So join in on the chorus! If you don't know something, get the talking points, they work every time cause if those people out there DON'T live in New York, they must be stupid!

Be careful, you may get what you want, then what? No refunds of purchase price!

The GOP wants to change the subject to 'the surge'.

Well, if McCain had been CiC he'd have followed the same bad advice Bush did:

Weve already seen where such visceral decision-making by McCain can lead. In October 2001, he speculated that Saddam Hussein might have been behind the anthrax attacks in America. That same month he out-Cheneyed Cheney in his repeated public insistence that Iraq had a role in 9/11 even after both American and foreign intelligence services found that unlikely. He was similarly rash in his reading of the supposed evidence of Saddams W.M.D. and in his estimate of the number of troops needed to occupy Iraq. (McCain told MSNBC in late 2001 that we could do with fewer than 100,000.) It wasnt until months after Mission Accomplished-- that he called for more American forces to be tossed into the bloodbath. The whole fiasco might have been prevented had he listened to those like Gen. Eric Shinseki who faulted the Rumsfeld war plan from the start.

Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin attempted to quietly have her daughter Bristol get married before news of her pregnancy leaked out, the NATIONAL ENQUIRER is reporting exclusively in its new issue.

Palin planned for the wedding to take place right after the Republican National Convention and then she was going to announce the pregnancy.

But Bristol, 17, refused to go along with the plan and that sparked a mother-daughter showdown over the failed coverup.

The ultra-conservative governors announcement about her daughters pregnancy came hours after The ENQUIRER informed her representatives and family members of Levi Johnston, the father of Bristols child, that we were aware of the pregnancy and were going to break the news.

In a preemptive strike Palin released the news, creating political shockwaves.

The ENQUIRER has also learned that Palins family is embroiled in a vicious war that is now exposing her darkest secrets, threatening to destroy her political career.

Palins ongoing war with her ex brother-in-law Mike Wooten, a state trooper, has caused multiple sources to come forward with shocking allegations about the governor.

Details of those allegations, the family feud, and Palins attempt to cover up her teen daughters pregnancy are in the new issue of The ENQUIRER.

this story is supposed to make people question the nomination? Who cares how fast the hookup was if it was the right one.

It Really doesn't matter to me who wins, I make my own living and only rely on the governement to make sure my car doesn't fall into a crater pothole, But I would love to see Obama lose, so I can hear what kind of whining and crying you and people like Frank Rich will do. But first I will have to get past "the election was stolen" crap

I wonder if the same looney who bad-mouths the New York Times prefers the Moonie Washington Times' reportage. Or for that matter, the National Enquirer's. The NE may not always be a model of rectitude, but where's smoke there's very often some semblance of fire, and I for one choose to believe that Sarah probably did diddle her legal hubby's business partner. herm

Here you go Hermie - "but where's smoke there's very often some semblance of fire" - do you believe this story from the national enquirer? What's the difference between this story and Palin's?

"..do you believe this story from the national enquirer?"

Sure. Don't you? Why not? Just because it's the enquirer?

"What's the difference between this story and Palin's?"

I don't know what you mean. Has Sarah addressed her affair with hubby's partner? herm

I'm not going to address the subject because Frank Rich is a major liberal hit man for the New York Slime. This info is for conservatives that are unaware of this ASSHOLE and his lies.
