A British student who was injured after falling off a horse in a remote part of Russia was rescued yesterday after sending a distress signal which was picked up 3,700 miles away by an RAF base in Scotland. "They were able to pinpoint the location of the group right down to an area smaller than half a tennis court," said Michael Mulford, from RAF Kinloss.

wow

Not much of a story.

Smart move to have an 406 MHz rescue beacon when in a remote area. I'd be more surprised if she wasn't rescued using this technology.

Millions of dollars in satellite technology, and R&D, a global telecommunications network, how could she not be rescued.

Now if she really had sent SOS using Morse code, and a simple radio transmitter, then it would be an interesting story.

A British student who was injured after falling off a horse in a remote part of Russia was rescued yesterday after sending a distress signal which was picked up 3,700 miles away by an RAF base in Scotland.

The signal from her beacon, was picked up by one of the COSPAS-SARSAT, which then downlinked the GPS data from her beacon to the RAF base in Scotland.

Nothing all that newsworthy happened, the system preformed as it was designed.

This would be like having a story about how I dialed a number on my phone, and another phone rang 2000 miles away!!!

I wonder what would have happened if he/she had a 121.5 mHz transmitter and the battery was not checked in over 6 months...how long would he/she have lasted, would it be heard 2000 miles away.

Let's see how long it takes the 'rape the earth' crowd to bash her because she was studying the effects of global warming.

Why didn't he just send Lassie?

What a world we live in!

also ff for Zap.
