Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Saturday, August 30, 2008

Hurricane Gustav neared Cuba's western tip Saturday, packing winds close to 120 mph. The storm could reach the U.S. Gulf coast late Monday or Tuesday, as a Category 3 or strengthen to a Category 4, the National Hurricane Center said. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation of the city beginning 8 a.m. Sunday but urged residents to consider escaping "the mother of all storms" before then. "You need to be scared. You need to be concerned, and you need to get your butts moving out of New Orleans right now. This is the storm of the century."

Expected landfall is now projected as somewhere between Morgan City, LA and N.O.

Katrina was a Cat 3 at landfall

Friends on Grand Cayman say it was a long, scary night. But no serious damage. However, the winds are picking up as Gustav moves toward Cuba and the mainland. Good luck, folks.

I have friends who left Thibodaux, LA at 4 am this morning and passed through Birmingham on their way to my house about 1/2 an hour ago.

Thibodaux is in the bayou West of N.O. and right in the path of the projected NE side of the eye - the worst part. They dodged a bullet with Katrina because they were on the West side of the eye that time, but this time it looks as though it'll be a direct hit.

We've been through this routine a lot of times over the years. It's been fun watching their 3 kids grow up too.

Last time I was down there I helped Andre get an alligator out of the pond in their front yard. It grew to 4' and was big enough to jump far enough to get one of their kids - who are now 7-10 years old. The swamp is right in back of their house. You can see huge Garfish in the water. They look like alligator fish with really sharp teeth.

Gustav's turning into a monster. Here's a SAT pic from this morning:

clear enough n.o.?

Just upgraded to Category 4

Wow. This is bad. Lives may be lost.

I hope Brownie is still around. I heard last time he did a helluva job.

Longtime members of the Retort may remember that we went apeshit here over Katrina after it entered the gulf, concerned that so many signs indicated it would slam New Orleans hard enough to breach the levees.

The same signs are in place here. Anybody on the Texas or Louisiana coast needs to make the necessary plans to get out of Dodge. Don't get stuck on the roads because you left too late and caught the mass exodus of people evacuating.

My friends should be here in an hour or so.

I hope Taxman got out of N.O.

Just now per my local radio station --

Hurricane Gustav just upgraded to Category 5

Run for the hills.

GOD is trying to aim at Minneapolis St Paul - she is so mad at Republicans taking her name in vain...

If anyone on the Gulf Coast needs assistance they can email me through here, leave a phone number, and I will help them secure accommodations here in the Nashville area. We have plenty of rooms in town, they're affordable, and there are plenty of neat things to do whether or not you have kids.

I will check my email hourly.

I've got my guns and ammo. I'm ready for it. Not leaving. Fuck you.

Rcade and AU --

Taxman posted on DR a couple days ago he and his wife planned
on leaving New Orleans Saturday (today).

POST # 13 for anyone needing assistance getting a place to stay til this blows over.

I will check hourly. Leave a phone number and I'll call you back.

EVACUATE???? NO STAY AND WAIT IT OUT.... let the government be the one responsible to rescue you.... i heard the mayor was think about using school buses to help out

I called the local 800 number to get a weather report. Instead of the usual calm pleasant recorded female voice on the other end, the recording yelled, "TWISTER!", and then the line went dead.

Where are you MODER8?

Actually, I'm in Los Angeles. My son is in Houston, and I know he is a little nervous.

Not being in Louisiana I have no trouble making some weak jokes at y'all's expense. I just hope all of you have the good sense to get out of this storms way.

JUDAS

First. Inappropriate comment.

Second. It IS the Federal Government's job. Notice how THIS time Bush has declared LA a disaster area in advance and sent help? He didn't do it last time.

MODER8

Computer models have it making a beeline to between Morgan City, LA and N.O.

Hurrican Tracker: www.msnbc.msn.com

Here is a great link (SciGuy) with hurricane updates, great maps, and also
gives four possible scenarios of where (and what will happen if) Hurricane Gus might make landfall in different areas.

HURRICANE GUS - maps/updates - keep scrolling down to get all the links

This is the last time I'm linking any hurricane update stuff. I've been putting it up on every hurricane thread, do if you all want to keep up -- bookmark it.

Have your son keep any pets in the house starting Sunday night and also either tie down (or put in the garage) any patio furniture and stuff which could go flying in the air if Houston receives heavy winds. Also tie down shrubs and plants which could break if the rain/wind blows too hard.

This interactive tracking map shows Gus' hurricane cone covering a storm area all the way from Corpus Christi, TX on its western end and going past New Orleans on it's eastern end.

Looks like it's scheduled to hit land around Tuesday.

Famous last words. lol

I'm in houston. We have our assholes set on a low pucker factor right now. But we're watching. If I have to bug out, i'm going to huntsville, al. if i can get out of houston.

Roll Tide!

Where's John Edwards?

MOTHER NATURES A BITCH! And here she comes to take back the drained swampland once again. Sad to say but it sucks when a city is built 12' below sea level and someday it will be rightfully put back my Mother Nature.

Hey Naggins maybe we call you King Neptune!

Thanks for those maps CC. I wish I would have brought my home owners and flood insurance papers with me. I was also planning on flying home to have my Jeep sent here in a couple weeks. *crosses fingers*

There's a meteorologist who works for the NWS who's been saying the models have it going too far west. He's been posting updates about every hour. Says GUS will intensify to Cat 5 and hit land as a Cat 4. He's privy to the most recent air reconnaissance computer data as well.

Says this one may be worse than Katrina.

it getting stronger fast and its just moving real slow. both bad signs

GOD Bless the people of the Gulf Coast, but I will take my chances with an Earthquake. To have to go through this every year would be more than I can take. Buckle down an hope for the best. This Government will not fail you this time, after KATRINA, they will help because the whole World is watching this time.

Of course after all is said an done they will claim that things went better this time is because they have a Republician leading the State of Louisiana, check with me in a week or so, these Clowns are so transparent, incompetent BASTARDS.....

Here are some fun hurricane predictions from a few weeks ago...

As callous as it sounds, I can't help but root for hurricanes. The weather phenomena, not the team.

Maybe it's because I'm evil.

I want to see a Mardi Gras celebrated in SCUBA gear.

I'm hoping Hanna will grow big and gnaw on Florida some more while Gus drowns the gulf states.

Yeah, I only watch NASCAR and such to see car crashes, too. I don't care who 'wins'.

Prayers for the folks there and for the cities to make it through the storm. Including the levees.

They need to put ice in the gulf to cool the water--it's a bathtub!

AU--Katrina was bobbing back and forth between Cat 3 4 and 5 before it hit landfall at Cat 3.

The storm surge is the killer.

Just hope everyone leaves like they are told and head north for a week.

We can handle the property damage--but loss of life is preventable when folks cooperate.

It's a relief to see that LA and NO (NOLA) are so prepared and way ahead of this. Great for them.

Hang on to your ten gallon Stetson, lol

"It's a hard wind, gonna blow...."

Looks like Ol' Gus is headed 'cross Fidel's beloved tobacco country.

I hope Gustav blows all of those cuban cigars up my way....

God bless the U S A and all the other letters of the alphabet.

If you believe that you are one stupid shit. Many of the people in the twin towers died becaust they were too stupid to run for their lives. They sat there and waited for the fire dept to lead them to safety.

If you can't take some responsibility for your own life you don't deserve to live.

MURPHY

Having been part of one exodus from a hurricane, I can tell you it's not as easy as you think evacuating.

Gas sells out along the way, rooms sell out, you have to go further and further. $4 gas. Finding a place for families with pets.

Not as easy as you'd like to think evacuating a million people.

SNIPER

Just what do you think FEMA stands for?

What do you think the national guard has been doing for decades during natural disasters.

You're the dumb shit. READ. It isn't hard boy.

Many of the people in the twin towers died becaust they were too stupid to run for their lives.

SNIPER

They were afraid to JUMP dumbshit.

The righties just babble and babble without a clue what they're talking about.

The track keeps inching towrd Houston. If it does, I'll ride it out because I always wanted to go through a cat 5, get a videao of myself tethered to a tree with a microphone in my hand so I can get a job on the weather channel.

AU...if i remeber correctly...there was a supreme coutry decision made...that says cops do not have to stop a crime....nor does it make fire department liable for not putting out a blaze or rescue a victim....so why does it make FEMA responsible to resuce people???? it does not...thats why when people go out to sue FEMA... they will lose...just like when the people sued the police for not answering...or when they sued the fire dept for not answering

Radio just said the highways and roads leading out of New Orleans are jam packed with cars as everyone gets the hell out of Dodge. Looks like no one wants to take a chance with ol' Gus headed their way.

"Just what do you think FEMA stands for?"

Fecal Enemas Made Anonymously?

"What do you think the national guard has been doing for decades during natural disasters"

I'm not entirely sure, but if you count the spent beer cans on the ground on the outskirts of the average disaster area you'll get a good idea...

Sorry, a little USMC humor there :).

For those who forgot:

McCain and Bush were yucking it up celebrating McCain's birthday during Katrina

CC, I'm still in St Croix. I'm just watching the weather carefully. We stayed at a resort here for about 5 months before we got our house. The Hurricane Hunters stay in the same resort when they come to fly missions. I met 4 of them a month or so ago, maybe I need to go see if they are here again and find out the scoop. My Jeep is in storage in SE Houston, good thing I kept the insurance active on it.

so why does it make FEMA responsible to resuce people????

JUDAS

Come on man. I know you have an IQ over 50.

FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY. You think they're there to sweep rain off the road?

In case you missed civics class the role of the government is first to PROTECT us. That includes from dying during or after a natural disaster.

Live blogging from the evacuation route. We are safe in Baton Rouge tonight and heading Dallas early in the morning. I think New Orleans will be fine, but those communities south of New Orleans are in for a world of hurt.

It's good to see the lessons of Katrina were learned. I wonder, however, how many times it will take before people learn to not rebuild a city that was stupidly built below sea level.

"As callous as it sounds, I can't help but root for hurricanes. The weather phenomena, not the team."

Me too. However, being in Houston I'm torn between my fascination with the phenomena and concern for my fiancee's and my own safety.

TAXMAN

I have friends and their kids from Thibodaux arriving any minute.

Glad you made it somewhere safe.

time to play guitar and buy more shoes, again.

"In case you missed civics class the role of the government is first to PROTECT us."

That line of thought is what gives government a carte blanche in enacting laws and rules that kill our liberties at home and promote endless interventionism abroad.

The role of government is to react to and apply resources to any societal functions that Americans (or any other society, group, or tribe) deem unable to be performed on an individual basis.

This goes for the local, state and federal levels. People in this country have become so used to having the govenrment do so much for them that literally this notion is quite foreign, except in cases of brushing their teeth or wiping their own asses, but rest assured the government hard at work on a taxpayer-subsidized fix for even THOSE issues.

AU...do you think the police are suppose to stop a crime or a fire dept to put out a blaze or rescue a victim

notice sometime during roits...the police just stand there and do nothing....im sure you have seen footage of the fire dept standing around watching a building burn down...WTC7....so why is FEMA different??? its not....and you can turn this into any politcal partisan show you want to turn this in....but no matter what politcal party is in charge....you will face the same problems...you have to accept that people have to take responiblity for themselves...because there are too many of us and not enough government to help.....BTW FEMA has rule on what need to be done before a federal government organisation can enter a state

"so why does it make FEMA responsible to resuce people????"

- Judas

Yeah, the "compassionate Republicans" never want to see all sides. Everything is so cut and dried and simple to them. Let them try packing up a family member who's an invalid, needs an air mattress, is hooked to a catheter tube, and needs medication at certain hours. Then see how easy it is, once that's taken care of, to then have that person sit in some car in wall to wall traffic on a road to get out of town -- let alone do it on a bus.

Not everyone can just grab their car keys and jump in the front seat to leave town. Newborn infants, toddlers, the elderly, pets -- all have special needs to be taken care of.

Many people in the last hurricane stayed because they had no one to help them get out a sick and/or elderly relative and didn't want to leave them alone through the hurricane. You're pretty much on your own because everyone is worried about getting their own precautions taken care of.

But it's all so easy to do say the Republicans. You can't leave your house in 15 minutes on your own to get out of town? Tough, it's all your fault is their usual answer. Need some help to get out of town? You're just selfish and greedy if you have to depend on others (or, God forbid, ever have to ask your local government for assistance) -- is the usual Republican response. Staunch Republicans don't have a clue (or a shred of sympathy for) what so many people have to deal with -- as has been more than evident these last 8 years.

Keep up an active blog on what's happening your way if you have a chance. Gus does look as though it's veering to the south and west of New Orleans but it's a toss up right now. Gus is going to be one nasty critter.

Gus has already been rated a cat 5 earlier today.

Shouldn't President Bush be in California right about now giving a $2,500 a plate fund raiser like he was when Katrina hit?

Bush only rushes back to Washington to try and convene Congress to do act when something REALLY IMPORTANT is happening.

FWTHOM,

It's not the storm surge I worry about, it's the wind and tornadoes and stuff like that. If I hear anything, I will post it on here. Good luck Taxman. We evacuated for Rita and it sucked.

"don't know who "People in this country have become so used ot having the government do so much for them" are. I haven't met them. Have you?"
You talk like 300 million of us do that, and you're just wrong

No. I'm not talking about 300 million, just the majority. and if you dumb it down to "Rush talking points" (I never listen to that idiot anymore anyway) you are doing yourself a disservice as an American.

Here's a few real easy examples-- hen the government starts wars overseas and the people here support it without investigation of their own, what is that called? When the government bails out banks, what is that called? If they do it and no one riots over that, who the fuck are you supposed to blame, Santa Claus? Both sides are talking endless interventionism to keep us safe "here at home" and most Americans will fall for it because they are too goddam busy to check things out for themselves and too unprepared to take a stand against the government's ever increasing power-- like the Golem who got away from his master, if you are familiar with that story.

CC... i dont need a lecture from you about hurricans...and if you really have been apart of one you will know about what local government and TV station do to get people ready....even before a hurrican hits ...you are show charts about what areas are flood zones...and are told about water surge hieght....they tell you about where the shelters are...and how to board up your house and get supplies ready...cops will even shout from loud speaker thought out flood zone to get people to evacuate

the problem is ...people think they can wait it out.....and have hurrican parties... i have seen people laugh at neighbors boarding up their houses just in case on hits....the problem come when people finnally take the hurrican serious....but then its too late.....emergency services are already hunkered down waiting for the strom to pass...so they can perform rescues in sort of safe fashion.....meanwhile people are paniking because help is not coming during the most dangerous part of the storm......and will complain after the storm that the resucue was not fast enough....even though communitcation and power lines are knocked out

Chris,

If I hadn't put two 5 gallon cans of gas up on top of my Jeep before I left I'd have been stranded alongside the road during the evacuation. There wasn't a gas station for a couple of hundred miles that wasn't sold out.

And yes, it's so easy for people who haven't ever done it to realize all that has to go into it - especially if, as you say, you have an elderly family member or children.

My friends, who should be here any minute, brought two cars because they have kids, and equipment for their business that would be ruined. Even if you have flood insurance, it takes weeks to get a check - all that time you're out of work.

It was a hell of a lot of preparation just getting myself out of there. I had money and a well running vehicle - and extra gas. Additionally, there wasn't a motel room for hundreds of miles up the freeway. Luckily I was single, so I slept in my car one night after driving 10 hours. Motel rooms and eating out aren't cheap either.

As you aptly pointed out it's so easy for some to point the finger when they have no idea what they're talking about.

JUDAS

I'm not going to respond to any more of your posts.

You're talking with no experience. Easy to do.

Just try evacuating a family - especially if you're low on money, or for all the reasons I listed above.

So, blather away.....

Nice of you to take in your friends, AU, to help them out. Good luck to you guys,
and hey -- go ahead and PARTY! May as well get some fun out of this hurricane. lol

Shouldn't President Bush be in California right about now giving a $2,500 a plate fund raiser like he was when Katrina hit?

To Bush's credit -- this time he went ahead and already declared States of Emergency for TX and LA which now allows federal help to go to those states ahead of time . It's never been done in the past before a disaster has occurred so I'll give Bush credit for getting help to those states ahead of Hurricane Gus' arrival.

Our thoughts and our prayers are with everyone in Gustav's path.

AU... read a HURRICANE GUIDE...they tell you what you need to know year after year...it has all the local serivces you need to know...people just need to learn to take hurricnas seriously....you act like poeple are not informed or that local serices are not offered...well im gald you are one person that is taking it seriously.....thats one less strain on our rescue teams

That's what we're planning on doing...having some fun.

His kids are 7-12 years old. I got them tickets so far to go to a waterpark called Nashville Shores (I know....ironic) on the nearby Percy Priest Lake, the zoo, all that stuff.

This is about the 10th time we've done this over the years. Always good to see them. I'm happy to provide the a safe place to head to.

This time I fear they may lose their house. The last couple (including Katrina) they were on the West side of the hurricane, so there wasn't a surge from the Gulf, just a lot of rain. THIS time though they could lose it all. I sure hope not.

At least they packed everything they treasure if they do.

I WONDER IF THE RED CROSS OFFERS ANY SERVICES....to help evacuate disabled people before a hurricane strikes

one last round of bush/cheney no bid contracts

Maybe thats too simple... your out of money...you do not want to go to the local shelter because you do not want to be with a bunch of other people...even though the shelter will have a evacuation plan too... and will have people how know first aid...yea getting to a local shelter is just that hard....like the local government will not help you to get to a local shelter....even though the local shelter is opened in way advance of a hurricane

Well, the doorbell just rang. Gotta get this worried Thibodaux, LA family settled and some pizzas ordered.

CNN is giving lots of updates.
I'll post a couple in case some of you in those areas don't have tv connection

GASOLINE

Shell Oil announced 10% of Shell gas stations in NO and Baton Rouge are now out of gas.
CNN said to get gas wherever you can find it and fill up.

even though there are HURRICANE PLANS...people do not plan for a hurricane....shame on the local government....who has done everything including leading the horse to water

I'll say a prayer your friends' home gets thru it all okay. And keep my fingers crossed too. CNN looks like it's going to have wall to wall tv coverage about Gus all weekend. Hurricanes are always a high ratings getter for cable channels.

This is really bad. It's the end of the month AGAIN and poor people may not have the money to leave.

Fells just like katrina...

Pray for the best and prepare for the worst! Good luck Gulf coast this one is bad.

I would hope the National Guard is now deployed helping with the evacuation. And shoot any looter on sight.

OK Pizza's ordered.

The first planeloads from N.O. and surrounding areas are showing up here in Nashville with the first busloads showing up at 10 pm. About 5000 people altogether.

CalifChris

Thanks for the prayers. I really hope they don't lose their home, but the bullseye, as it's predicted right now, goes right over their house. On the bad side of the Gulf side of the hurricane.

They left at 4 am this morning and just missed the hundreds of miles long traffic jams as the 1,000,000 people evacuate.

Just heard from the family who stayed with us for 3 months after Katrina. They moved up here in the aftermath. They're heading over to a Red Cross shelter. We really mobilize around here when the need strikes :-)

Just thinking ahead. If New Orleans gets destroyed again, I can't imagine anybody would ever want to move back.

tip my hat to AU for offering a place for anyone in need. i've lived near the Texas Gulf Coast most of my life and been through many hurricanes. you don't want to mess around or wait until the last second.
while Katrina should have been the lesson of a lifetime for Nawlins folk, i'm sure there will be plenty who make excuses for not leaving. "not enough money" "nowhere to go" etc etc etc. i realize it may be difficult to evacuate, but it beats death, and putting the lives of your would-be saviors in harms way. when Rita hit Texas, it was much weaker than expected, and i'm afraid too many people will underestimate this storm.

Yeah, those bootstraps everyone is supposed to have to pull themselves up by are apparently teleporters as well.

That is the general Republican philosophy. "You can do anything you put your mind to. But I'll be damned if I'll help you. Or even allow you to have the basic help I would expect in the same situation. Move somewhere else. What, you can't afford to? You must be lazy/stupid/on welfare/too lazy to go to college."

While I have, of late, found myself despairing for the differences between Dems and Republicans.. all I have to do is think of what the main constituency was saying after Katrina.. and I start seeing the difference between the men and the pigs again.

i realize this mostly revolves around politics, but does it have to be FORCED into every story??? once in awhile, a little humanity would be nice. at least think about it.

i realize this mostly revolves around politics, but does it have to be FORCED into every story???

It's not forced. New Orleans wouldn't be in the position it is if it weren't for political corruption, subsidies and insurance.

Consider it.. advance warding. I'd rather be cynical towards the right-inclined so that way I can be surprised pleasantly when they behave like decent human beings for once in their greedy little lives.

I want to either be able to shrug and go "Yeah, that's what I expected." if they're racist assholes again, or be surprised they were good people; rather then be sickened to my core like I was after Katrina. Girding my own loins, so to speak.

It works both ways, how in the hell is Nagin
still around in any position of authority!

Just thinking ahead. If New Orleans gets destroyed again, I can't imagine anybody would ever want to move back.

Exactly. It's time to expose once and for all the folly of continually rebuilding a city that nature insists on having back. May as well have flushed it down the toilet.

I was in NO on Thursday, heading back from Houston. What a miserable place.

Got 'em all settled in. They're sound asleep after getting up at 1 am this morning and driving all day.

Local hotels and motels are giving all LA, MS, and TX evacuees 50% off rooms I heard on TV.

They're expecting 5000 evacuees in shelters here as well.

Last year was the first year two North American hurricanes made landfall on the same day.

This year may be the first for two Atlantic landfalls.

What fun!

I knew two families from Katrina that ended up in Cleveland, Ohio. They found work soon after. Lasted one year and move back to the south where the jobs are.

Lesson learned come to Ohio for safety and college. Then go find a job elsewhere! LOL!

I made a move from Cleveland, Ohio to Houston four years ago and it was the best move of my life. There really is no more economic reasons for Cleveland to exist anymore. It is one of the few cities in the country to lose population for the last 30 years. Several hundred thousand Katrina refugees came to Houston and never left.

Good luck to all the people and their families down there, and I hope they all get out in time safely. It's true they've already had a bad time of it in the past, but I'm sure everything will come together for obama wants em to starve when they come back to their homes and loved ones. Best wishes.

This is why no one can take you seriously at DR.

Here's what YOUR fellow anal retentive jerks were doing as Katrina hit:

Bush helps McCain celebrate birthday as Katrina hits the Gulf Coast

Here's the pandering McCain 3 years later:

"...but you know it just wouldnt be appropriate to have a festive occasion while a near tragedy or a terrible challenge is presented in the form of a natural disaster"

Morons like you ARE the problem with America. You keep voting for clueless morons. Birds of a feather....

AU, I don't see what your problem is TONIGHT. Maybe you don't care about those people, and I guess that's cool if that's how you want to be, but it kinda contradicts your previous comments where barry laughs while they sink and I've spoken before to you about your anger. It has no place on this thread, and I hope you get therapy. Again, you bozo.

evac of New Orleans not mandatory. they're strongly encouraging. they just said on Houston's channel 2 news that

1) the people that stay will have no services available -- they will be on their own
2) 911 is being shutoff

basically an advertisement for all criminals, miscreants, and lowlifes to stay behind. fucking brilliant! Katrina Part Deux! Mad Max here we come!!

My friends are sound asleep after leaving LA at 4 am and arriving here a few hours ago. They got up at 1 am to pack and leave. They're building a new home in Thibodaux. At least if it's destroyed all will not be lost on that end. There home is in the bullseye of the hurricane. Time will tell.

We're filling up with Gulf Coast residents around here.

My neighbor two doors down was an architectural history professor at Tulane University in NO, and moved up here after Katrina leveled his historic home there. He's done an amazing job restoring their new historic home on 2 acres two doors down. Glad to have him.

My street has a lot of evacuees tonight. I have 6 in my house, and my neighbor must have 6 cars from LA in his driveway. We're all gonna get together and have gumbo on Monday.

All the local hotels and motels are giving rooms for half price to Gulf Coast residents, and we're expecting an estimated 5000 evacuees in local Red Cross shelters and churches.

I'm praying for everyone in LA, etc, but without any snarkiness involved.

AU, what state are you in? for some reason I thought MI?

"...but I'm sure everything will come together for obama wants em to starve when they come back to their homes and loved ones.

COOKFISH

You're a piece of work. Moron

Confusion.

COOKFISH

Guess you missed the pic of McCain's birthday bash with Bush as Katrina hit?

At least this time the moron in the WH has his act together, and the moron running for office is singing a different tune now that he has to appear concerned.

Where was all that concern 3 years ago last night when Katrina was destroying hundreds of square miles and killing 1800 people? Why didn't he urge Bush to drop his plans for parties and fundraisers and get on the ball....THEN?

Birds of a feather.... You're right in there with 'em

I don't know why we can't have a reasonable converstaion, AU, instead of always bantering back and forth. You seem to be able to hold your own in sharp as a bowling ball with some occasional good talking points. Hopefully you'll be less cranky tomorrow.

Here it is again:

McCain and Bush yuck it up as people die - Katrina - August 29, 2008

COOKFISH

Maybe you could consider leaving words of hope and prayers and leave the snark out of it for once?

My posts referencing Bush and McCain are salient because Bush and McCain DID yuck it up when Katrina hit, yet today McCain acts all concerned and says festivities would be "inappropriate".

Can't you be a decent person for once and leave the snark out about Obama? Are you THAT much of a racist idiot?

To even suggest that the president is somehow laughing at the people on NO is probably the most hideous thing you've ever said on this blog, AU. I though it was YOU that wanted to discuss issues instead of this "gotcha" nonsesne. I believe we can did stupid mate with your fore fathers where you stated previously that this isn't a really necessary way to discuss things.

COOKFISH

It would be a refreshing to have a decent conversation with you some day. I'm as guilty as you are for the sniping back and forth between us.

If you want to call a truce I'd be fine with that.

Let me know....

In the meantime this next few days I'll be taking care of my friend's family, watching the deep concern etched on their faces that there may be nothing left when they get home. They're right in the bullseye of the projected path of Gustav.

I'm willing to give it a go, but it's a two way street, dude. I also have a bad tendency to get riled up about what I write, but I don't mean to offend TOO much. However, I do have an abrasive style that occasionally goes too far, and I end up having god you are a dense one it seems we may need to tone down our rhetoric. I'll give it a try.

I'm in COOKFISH

Right now I'm just a concerned American. My friends are died in the wool Republicans. That doesn't matter one iota to me at this moment.

I'll be nicer to you too. Hey, life's short. At times like these it's best we all be Americans and God's kids.

I know I haven't been pleasant to you either, and I apologize. I get riled up about politics, but it's because I care about my fellow citizens - too many of whom are really struggling. Most of them had good jobs and college degrees.

I'm not a hateful person. I know both want America to do well and disagree on how that can be accomplished. You know what they say about talking about religion and politics.... LOL Too true here at DR. I try to live life with a healthy sense of humor in the real world, but this being a political site I know I get too passionate and blast out there. Guilty. But, if we ever crossed paths I think you'd find I'm a pretty nice person, and not some terrorist loving asshole LOL

Perhaps we can agree to disagree on politics without being disagreeable. I'm up for it.

Meanwhile, I hope we can all pray for the safety of those in Gustav's path, and those who are worried sick tonight their homes and livelihoods may be destroyed. Just speaking from my own little perspective here at my house full of Thibodaux, LA residents the worry is etched deep in their faces.

Take care man.

AU :-)

I live on the north shore. I'm going to ride it out since I have to be to work within 24hrs of landfall. I may send the wife and kids to Memphis though. Things are looking a lot better around here. I guess it being only 3 years since Katrina the memories are fresh and scars are not completely healed yet.

I said Bush and McCain were laughing it up while Katrina hit. Pictures to prove it.

Be cool

At least this time the moron in the WH has his act together, and the moron running for office is singing a different tune now that he has to appear concerned.

This attack you are trying on McCain that he should have been doing something during Katrina is laughable. At the time Katrina hit, John McCain wasn't running for President. He was just the Senior Senator for Arizona. He had nothing to do with Louisiana, or New Orleans.

So why wouldn't he celebrate his birthday. Are you saying no other senator on August 29, 2005 laughed once? No one enjoyed their day... out of all the members of Congress only John McCain was cracking a smile?

What do you think Sen. John McCain from Arizona should have done back in 2005?

Katrina was very good for Memphis, Birmingham and Nashville, as many professionals abandoned NOLA and started new lives elsewhere.

If Gus is at least as strong then Nagin will get his wish: a chocolate city full of unskilled poor people.

When you're with the President, wouldn't you inquire what you can do, or that perhaps the President needs to get on with managing the crisis and you'll hook up another time rather than spend hours celebrating a birthday and then flying off to another party?

I would in his shoes. McCain should have cut it off if Bush wouldn't.

I'm not going to argue this point with you.

VERNON

How are things in Taipai, and why do you care what happens here to the point of making idiotic statements?

I'm not going to argue this point with you.

#134 | Posted by AMERICANUNITY

Because its retarded?

How do you know McCain didn't say the President should get down there, or end it? Do you have transcripts of all their conversations? So the President gave a senior senator a cake on his birthday... BFD.

You still haven't explained why the Senior Senator from ARIZONA can't celebrate his birthday because LOUISIANA got hit by a hurricane.

Celery,

Things DEFINITELY will go better this time! talkj about transparent! You are already headging your bet! LOL!

Why do you always feel the need to play the blame/victim card/game, trying to make excuses for poor performance on behalf of the mayor and governor three years ago? Who cares what political party they belong to? Apparently you still do.

It is the same mayor, but this time, he got off his lazy arse and is acting responsibly and actually doing something about demanding an evacuation...

No more lame excuses (from either of you) like last time. Perhaps he learned his lesson the hard way, DUH.

The ex-governor, whatever her useless name was, is now nowhere to be found, as it should be.

You appear to be frothing at the bit to get another chance to BLAME BUSH, or anyone you disagree with politically, for everything that will go wrong.

One would think that any reasopnable and prudent person would be responsible enough to evacuate, taking their families with them. Don't you agree? Afterall, whose individaul responsibility is it, ultimately, for one's own judgement or lack thereof?

However, the BIG assupmtion I am making is in describing who... "one would think"... really is. That person first and froemost would have to be a "reasonable and prudent person" to begin with!

In case you don't know the answer, this is still the USA, where individual rights and responsibilities of this nature begin with a person and they always trump those of the 'gubment"...

Therein lies the disagreement between you and me.

Hope things go well.

AU,

You are halucinating to think that GWB and JM were laughing at NO while Katrina hit it.

You are insinuating a scenario in which both GWB and JM were at a prize fight and their pick to win (Katrina) just landed the knock-out blow to their opponent (New Orleans). They are so elated they are laughing, almost cheering.

Isn't that an appropriate example of what you mean (no pun intended)?

Your panties must still be in a wad after getting blindsided over the incredible, winning selection of Sarah Palin! The rest of your ilk is still scrambling like MAD.

...or is it just that time of the month, AGAIN, for you?

Pathetic, simply pathetic... and I apologize to you all for lowering myself to even respond to au, much less to continue to visit the drudge refart.

Adios, amigos, I'll stick to the real thing, the DRUDGE REPORT, where the real news isn't "faked" by a bunch of posts from "socialist, whining, Uh-Bama cry-babies"!

"socialist, whining, Uh-Bama cry-babies" a true, self-retorting retort!

Buh bye, choir boys!

Where did I say they were laughing at NO as Katrina hit?

I said they were laughing....'yucking it up'.

The pictures prove it.

McCain and Bush laugh it up on August 29th, 2005 as Katrina hits

Oh here we go again! A hurricane is coming so let's blame the Republicans. Never mind that that goon, Nagin was in charge then and now. And if any crack-whores and petty thieves are too stupid or jacked-up to leave, it will be McCain's fault now instead of Bush's.

And you wonder why responsible people like me are sick of your neo-socialist, blame the rich-guys' agenda? I didn't choose to live in a soup-bowl, and I didn't choose to give up my dreams for drugs and welfare.

If they drown, it's their own damn fault. They were plenty warned (again!)

you're angry..

you should try drugs... The hippies tell me it works wonders...

Hey Gusto!

Make the world a better place, take some drugs and hang out in NOLA for about three days too!

Tool!

Hey, it worked for Rush Limbaugh and Cindy Mccain, what makes you so special?

I tagged you with a "WTF does that have to do with anything" flag.

I've taken drugs, then I got smart enough to realize that I was acting like a tard.

What's your excuse crackhead?

My excuse, it's 5am and I'm just laughing at the angry little man on the blogs.

The venom you injected into your first post struck me as funny so I figured I'd poke you a bit...

carry on :)

Thank you for allowing me to carry on. I was going to give up blogging altogether because you, of obviously superior wit and intelligence, was criticizing my comments.

First of all, if you have any sympathy for these idiots that choose to die, you are a moron.

Second of all, if you think the Republicans were responsible for their demise, especially after the devistation that "Mayorismo" Nagin could have prevented with some leadership and foresight, you are a hack.

What you consider angry, is merely the blunt and honest truth...that fact that you dismiss it as "anger" says alot about your level of intelligence.

Fowler Fouls: Hurricane is God's Favor to Democrats

Watch the video.

So you see, it's funny. That New Orleans will get a hurricane. That's funny because it is due to hit when President Bush is scheduled to speak. Isn't that cool? Fowler isn't the only one who thinks so, just ask Michael Moore.

We all know Democrats used and use Katrina as a political football as callously as possible. Here's a candid moment showing some can hardly wait for another one.

All Class.

I heard this morning that if such is the case, President Bush is going to phone in his speech, so it won't look like he's partying again . . . like the last time. (Ouch!)

It just wouldn't look good, ya' know. With all those nasty press people and photographers hanging around.

The Democrats couldn't be giddier! They're tee-hee-ing it up! Just look at Michael Moore... what a riot!

G_d will punish the people if they think of voting for Republicans! The people in New Orleans DESERVE the disaster that's coming...(Old Testament according to Howard Dean)

Are you an atheist, or merely a moron who feels compelled to offend people who are religious?

Translation: I am such an unthinking political hack that I now hate an entire city for being tragically unprepared for Katrina, which created the opportunity for Bush to put his incompetence on display once again.

Check out this map of off-shore oil rigs I came across (Goat's rig is # 3 on the map).
Then compare it to the maps showing where the full brunt of Hurricane Gus is headed. Unless it changes, Goat's rig is dead on in the center of the hurricane as it makes its way to shore. They evacuated Goatman's off-shore rig on Thursday (a day early) and after looking at this map he just may get a lot more time off work than he had planned if Gus' winds and waves cause any damage.

Look for $8.00 a gallon gas real soon, folks, if Hurricane Gus ends up taking out a few of these off shore oil rig platforms.

I saw that picture. It was of an elderly woman sitting in a wheelchair in the NO sports arena where everyone was seeking shelter. Whey people realized she had passed away had passed away they didn't "dismember and attack" her. A blanket was placed over her and she remained in the wheelchair until she could removed from the arena Unless you know of a different person in a wheelchair your story is false about her being "attacked by savages."

Project much, FJ?

So glad to see everyone paying attention and getting out of the way of the storm. I think this points out an issue with the continuance of Government between administrations. If you're going to appoint people to be in charge of FEMA every election, then they need to pay attention to what the institutional memory - the lessons learned - have been.

YAV

Nagin was just on tv and said how well everything has been going this time. He's spoken to Bush, the head of DHS has been in contact with him all the time, the different parishes are coordinating daily with each other for evacation plans, and all is going well. At least, for once, they are all putting politics on the back burner as both parties are working together to eliminate as much danger as possible rather than always trying to one up each other.

Also, check out my #168 to ZAT and look at the map of the off-shore rigs.
(Check out Goat's rig - # 3 on the map I linked there. His oil rig is dead center in the path of Gus.) I'm going out for awhile and think I may fill up the gas tank. I heard they even opened a special session this weekend to discuss oil concerns and if some of these off shore rigs are damaged (which now seems a possiblity) we're looking at much higher gas prices in the very near future. Maybe even next week?

I guess it just goes to show, even crack ho's and welfare moms can learn a lesson (to follow early evacuation orders) if you put them in the ring and let them box a real hurricane every couple of generations.

CalifChris - Thank you! That was good info. I think Goat's rig is just off the projected path, but on the bad side. The winds there are the hurricane's plus the forward motion - I've been through that. We will be thinking about him and everyone else in the path.

Hey Chris how r ya? It's what I saw on CNN as reported by them, they might have been incorrect or overzealous for a story but the whole damn thing was sickening. Check this out, these are quotes from the ppl themselves and I have the references for you. On the main page go to the highlighted references where they expound
