Environmental designers and green architects are meeting this week at Fort Campbell to plan the first "zero-energy" homes on a U.S. military installation, two duplexes that will incorporate solar panels and geothermal technology to produce as much energy as they consume.

YEAH!

Except it Wont Work! The only thing that will work is to Drill, Drill and Drill some more.

Sincerely

Newt and The Oil Company Defenders!

Ft. Campbell was the last base I lived on as an Army brat. Go for it!

This is a bad idea! How are the energy companies suposed to make a living. You are killing jobs!!!

Quick more tax cuts for Big Oil!

Actus, which manages Fort Campbell Family Housing and has built 400 new homes on the base since 2003, dedicated $500,000 to transform their designs for a two-family duplex into a zero-energy home. The project is also funded with a $870,000 grant from the Department of Defense.

Two duplexes. $1.37 million, to save about $140 a month, times 2.

Leave it up to the government to figure that's a good deal, and for the lefties on the DR to second the motion.

I second the motion just to spite You. How do those grapes grab Ya RiR??

Larry

I like grapes.

I heard McCain likes strawberries.

"This is a bad idea! How are the energy companies suposed to make a living. You are killing jobs!!!"

What's more important, killing jobs that can be re-created, or killing the planet that can not be recreated? Look at the bigger picture.

Oil and gas companies will just evolve to the changing energy needs.

My day job is working for an oil and gas company.

If utilities were normally $400 a month for the two combined, it will only take a little less than 300 years to pay for itself. Government works!

Green technologies will create new jobs; provided they aren't allowed to be outsourced. Industries will rise up to replace or compliment existing ones (hopefully, anyway). The existing players, however, might not be too thrilled and will likely do everything within their considerable influence (read: bought politicians) to thwart development/implementation.

Two duplexes is four units. And building two regular duplexes would cost something, probably way more than it needs to if this is a government project. So its hard to say exactly what the true cost to monthly savings ratio is here.

Seems to me the point of this project is to experiment with new technology, which almost always becomes cheaper over time.

The entire housing military should go green. Especially in areas of known conflict.

The first hybrid cars were prohibitively expensive, too, like current hydrogen vehicles. Of course development costs are much, much higher than is practical for large-scale application, but that doesn't mean the eventual resulting technologies will be similarly costly. It's like F1 racing; technologies are developed at cost-no-object, but they eventually bear fruit in affordable means, e.g., variable valve technology, which is in even the most affordable of vehicles now.

You'd think that all you "drill, drill, drill" people here would get the notion of long-term investment. It's not as if we'll see the benefits of that for at least ten years...but somehow that's okay?

That's fucking deep.

A scam?

C'mon Joe.

I have no love for United Way, but it's hardly a scam.

Let me ask you this - compare and contrast the percentage of money collected that reaches the end-user vs. a government-program with similar aims.

Sometime down the road, we'll be complaining that politicians bought and paid for by Big Solar keep supporting a policy of intervention in the Middle East, where the sun shines brighter, just to line the pockets of their Solar masters.

We'll also be protesting outside those damned Geothermal corporations for sucking all the heat out of the earth, causing global implosion.

"The entire housing military should go green. Especially in areas of known conflict."

If you spoke the language of known conflict you wouldn't be saying that!

"Sometime down the road, we'll be complaining that politicians bought and paid for by Big Solar keep supporting a policy of intervention in the Middle East, where the sun shines brighter, just to line the pockets of their Solar masters."

Please tell me this is a joke. Sun shines brighter....ha ha ha....it's just as bright here in Texas.....and as hot.

"Please tell me this is a joke."

I assumed it was cloudier in Texas than in the Middle East, where rain is a more frequent occurance. Maybe I'm wrong.

Also, if you have to ask whether or not that was a joke, you're retarded.

It's one, two-family duplex.

I understand that the first copy is always the most expensive. But geothermal? That's like saying, we're going to try to save the families from buying kitchen utensils by digging an iron ore mine under the house.

You are killing jobs!!!

They took our Jerrbs!

I'm still laughing at Pinche posting that comment and then signing it "Moneywar, Age 52".

Did I miss Moneywars explanation of that grammatical abortion, or wasn't there one? How can he not do us the favor of explaining that one?!?

RIR - From the article: "two duplexes that will incorporate solar panels"

I'm not saying this doesn't sound expensive. And it very well may turn out that the technology involved isn't feasible. But as far as our government pissing away money goes, this doesn't bother me too much. At least we can say they are trying to aid in the advancement of new technology, even if they are being stupid about it. Most pork has no redeeming value.

Chair,

I'm still laughing at Pinche posting that comment and then signing it "Moneywar, Age 52".

It's not on this thread - where is it?
I'd like to laugh too.

"Did I miss Moneywars explanation of that grammatical abortion, or wasn't there one? How can he not do us the favor of explaining that one?!?"

There was a thread about it. CaliChris somehow understood what he was saying - something about how only soldiers who speak the local language should be stationed in a conflict zone. And then because Cali somehow deciphered it, Moneywar used the opporunity to insult the intelligence of everyone who didn't understand him.

"Also, if you have to ask whether or not that was a joke, you're retarded."

Screw you!! I guess it takes a big man to sit there and insult someone else. Boy, you're my hero....NOT!

On this site, it is hard at times to know what is sarcasm, and what isn't. Excuse the heck out of me for wanting clarifcation. I was always taught that the only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask.

If you have ever been to Texas, you would know how hot and sunny it actually gets here. But, most of you people are too damned scared to even venture to our state. Most people simply like to sit back and assume they are better than we are, and we are some sort of inbreed yokels. Even when it's cloudy in Texas, it's still hot as hell.

Thanks Chair.

I saw it the first time around, but didn't recognize the more current references to its brilliance.

It was a Boyd moment.

This is the thread devoted to that one sentence.

MW never gave us an explanation, prolly thought we were too stupid to get it anyway, or... actually had a mini-stroke and was too embarassed to acknowledge that he wrote it.

"On this site, it is hard at times to know what is sarcasm, and what isn't. Excuse the heck out of me for wanting clarifcation. "

Your mistake was giving him the benefit of the doubt. You saw someone saying something stupid and illogical and you figured it was probably a joke. You couldn't fathom that anyone would actually believe that we could become dependent on "Middle Eastern sun". So you tried to engage the individual as a sensible human being. And you were insulted for your kindness.

Moral of the story: Don't be nice to people who say stupid stuff on the interwebs.

RiR,

I think they were referring to the ground source heat pumps(very efficient) when they said geothermal.

Sully - you always make things better.....thanks!

Hey Oberon,

Have you ever drunk Oberon?

(I am dead serious)

"I was always taught that the only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask."

Posted by Oberon

I didn't say the question was stupid. Sometimes the one asking the question just happens to be, and that happens to be the reason they are asking the question.

If you have to guess whether or not this post is a joke, you're retarded.

"Your mistake was giving him the benefit of the doubt."

Sully's right by the way.

Only people speaking the language of known conflict have now become the entire housing military.

"Leave it up to the government to figure that's a good deal, and for the lefties on the DR to second the motion."

Since he's obviously never heard of progress, I'm guessing RIR has a cell phone the size of a cinderblock and his computer takes up two rooms.

"Only people speaking the language of known conflict have now become the entire housing military."

All your military housing belong to us.

While I disagree with your assessment of RIR, that picture is hilarious.

I have a friend who's a retired fireman living in Indiana.

He built his house 'zero energy' about 20 years ago.

Heat comes from solar panels and glass all around the ceiling. Cooling comes from the fact he dug 50' under the house. His hous is really a 'house within a house'.

When it's winter the heat from the sun via the many windows and solar panels provide heat and power fans to move it around. When it's hot in the summer, there are motorized windows in the ceiling windows that will let out heat and solar powered pumps that pump ground temperature air up from underground.

I know, and it's not worth arguing about. But when you read the article it says that the project will be for two families.

When I was in the Army, I lived in a duplex. We called the individual units a duplex.

I don't mean to sound like a Scrooge--I hope it works. Just seems like a lot of money to spend. I wonder if it wouldn't be cheaper to put a nuclear reactor on every base. If they're powerful enough to power an aircraft carrier, why not Fort Drum?

Jeff - No I haven't. We don't have Oberon Beer in Texas. But, I would be interested in trying it.

Live or Die - Please refrain from being a schmuck to me. Thanks.

Interesting effort by the least green organization in the country.

So far this technology is only economical where houses are 15 miles from a power pole. Geothermal is a local non-renewable energy source.

"I know, and it's not worth arguing about."

Bullshit. I say it is.

Seriously, I read the article again and you are right.

I'm sure it can be done but at what cost?

I knew a guy that built one of thoes house within a house things and back in 2000 it only cost him about $150 a month to heat it. It only cost half again what a regular house cost. Hell-of-a-deal.

I'm sure it can be done but at what cost?

Posted by Sniper at 2008-08-28 01:08 PM

You mean at what cost to the profits of the Oil Companies and Electric Companies right?

yeah what will be the cost?

Did you read the article... no you never do. The technology has already been developed (no cost there).

The initial installation costs of energy efficient GREEN systems are always more than the old wasteful technologies but after that the costs drop dramatically. It is a proven fact that Green systems save money.

And after installation the Energy is essentially free. How's that for cost?

This is a perfect opportunity for the military to do a proof of concept for the rest for the industry to follow and save money in the process.

How many homes and other buildings could have been rooved with solar panels, how many geothermal systems could have been installed - for the cost of the illegal war in Iraq?

How many homes and other buildings ...

For approx. $1Trillion?

I don't know, most probably.

How much did your energy-free home cost, Donnerboy? Or are you just a dupe for the oil and electric companies?

Cut him some slack. A solar powered conversion van is years off.

I know you are trying to be a smart ass but boy you are really dumb aren't you! I am still trapped by the Bushco policies of failure friend like many Americans. The Electric Company still has its hooks in me and I am still driving an inefficient car...like most Americans.

As soon as Obama gets in charge we can start changing all that.

hence the slogan CHANGE!

I do know some folks that have managed to do this already on their own but I do not have that kind of financing available and I with a large family I don't have that luxury right now. Hopefully, with some low interest loans and tax credits we can all get these kind of modifications soon. I do have the roof space and the Southern Exposure for Solar and I don't need any cooling as I have free air conditioner already. Its called the Pacific Ocean.

And I really look forward to my electric commute car too!

Umm . . . were you aware that there are already plenty of those credits in place? That you can power your car on natural gas for almost nothing out of pocket?

Fair enough though. As usual, you'll wait for someone in Washington to tell you to go ahead, before taking it upon yourself.

GObama! Donnerboy needs a new car!! Now that's some change we can all get behind, eh?

Posted by donnerboy at 2008-08-28 04:40 PM

This sad and pathetic post provides some deep insight into the liberal mindset. Not only does he blame Bush and Electric Companies for why he is driving an inefficient car, he also thinks that Obama is going to give him loans and tax credits (which already exist) to live a more green lifestyle. Does Donnerboy know that the Toyota Corolla is one of the most fuel efficient cars out there, and is also one of the cheapest? What are you driving, how much did it cost, and why is that Bush's fault?

"Posted by donnerboy at 2008-08-28 04:40 PM"

LOL, FF!

No seriously, there are efficient, affordable cars out there.

There's also plenty of options for powering your home using green technology, and receiving federal and state help for doing so.

So, after 8 years of 'O' you'll still be driving an inefficient car, and powering your home the old fashioned way, because you lack the will and conviction to do it yourself.

I'm driving an efficient car, and am working on installing a geothermal heat pump in my home (in the research stages). I've also taken measures to use less plastics and generally create less waste. Obama didn't do it for me!

How much did your energy-free home cost, Donnerboy? Or are you just a dupe for the oil and electric companies?

psssst, hey buddy, guess what, it isn't only about the bottom line. Energy independence has got to appeal even to a miser like you, no? Isn't that something worth investing in? How about NEW markets? There's a lot of coin to be made in the clean energy racket these days. And I know you don't give a shit about clean air and water, but can you at least try to accept the fact that those things are also important to some of us, and we're not all doomsday armageddon whackos?

Wow--how did you know those things about me? You're right--just today I tried to befoul a bunch of air and water, just for the hell of it. What a douchebag you must be to just assume you're as clean as the driven snow. Chances are my so-called Gorebot "carbon footprint" is smaller than yours. For damn sure it's smaller than Obama's and Biden's and Pelosi's and Clinton's and Gore's. Why not bitch about those jagoffs, messing up your clean air and water with their giant homes, their giant planes, their giant cars?

Well, it's one thing to carry on about energy independence, and another to make sure it never happens. How many nuclear plants is Obama going to build? How much domestic drilling will be replacing Saudi crude? What's his position on using coal--the US has more than anyone else in the world--to power new plants and factories?

Let me know how many windmills it takes to power the Atlantic coast, listen to your Obamania tonight, and then tell me how he hopes to get us there.

Until then, load up on foreign energy companies. They're for sure going to be making a lot of money during the Obama administration.
