Our taxes here are out of control, and we have very little to show for it. In July I took the motorcycle and traveled through Indiana, Kentucky, Tennesse, North Carolina, South Carolina and back through Ohio. In South Carolina gasoline was $.30 cheaper than in Mich. What is the difference? Not the price of the gas, but the taxes. I was in 7 states if you count MI and *by far* the worse roads were in MI. How is that? They collect more taxes, yet we have worse roads?

My fear is that the dems will do for the country what they have done for MI. And as badly has Bush and Co. have messed things up with their out of control spending. I believe it can be worse and will be worse under the Dems.

The UAW had no role in which vehicles would be rolled out.

It was the CEO's and management of the Big Three who made those decisions. And they made multimillion dollar paydays whether or not the companies made money.

I think most of Michigan's problems came from the closing of industrial plants due to outsourcing. My best friend is a guy who is from Michigan that moved down here to Florida after his job was outsourced.

The Michigan automakers ruined Michigan. They were too stupid in the seventies to start making smaller cars after the oil embargo, and insisted on shoving those gas guzzlers down American driveways for 20 years before trying to crack the small car market with a quality automobile.
Showrooms today are full of Hummers and SUVs with the same philosophy.

Don't blame the unions for management stupidity. Without unions--there would be no middle class--no America.

As McCain self destructs in the next (2) months and his senility becomes more obvious, Obamas lead in Michigan will increase to 15-20% by the election.

Danni, you are correct the UAW did not decide which cars were to be built, but they contributed to the problems that the Auto industry has. The benefits that were negotiated did not take the long term into account. Now that the auto makers are paying for these they are at a competetive advantage. The unions have also made it difficult to get rid of people who do not perform and often require the manufacturer to hire more people than is necessary. The Unions, the Companies and Government are all to blame in this.

Perhaps that is why the President of GM supports a national health care plan. American companies are at a disadvantage and Democrats have been saying that for years. Perhaps since Japan and China and other manufacturing companies put up tariffs to protect their industries we ought to try the exact same thing which is opposed, of course, by Republicans. Make no mistake, the Republican Party doesn't care about Michigan and will continue outsourcing and free trade which will just further diminish American manufacturing.

As I mentioned before management had no problem accepting multimillion dollar paydays while their companies lost money. In Japan the CEO's make an average of 20 times what their hourly employees make. Before they lay off people they take a pay cut.

I now have a lincoln ls that was made right up there in michigan (is it lansing ?). love that car. it was built by union hands, but it cost 40k. that's what a car needs to cost, these days, to make union labor viable.

Plus, cars like that are a niche market. you can't support the whole industry on them because it's too much money for most people to pay.

You cannot sling a dead cat in the south without hitting some smallish factory that makes door knobs or the spring clip in the seats or turn signal lenses. And they fly under the radar because they have a small workforce and they are very efficient.

Those kind of places is what the auto industry has become. And it came from detroit, except for bmw and toyota and isuzu and mercedes, etc... The big 3's long term goal right now is to completely destroy the unions, and they are willing to take some causalties to do it.

The BMW plant in South Carolina and the Mercedes plant in alabama, non-union, taught the us auto industry a lesson. now everybody wants to be just like them.

That lesson is, American can build good cars and they don't need to belong to a union to do it.

Buying a car that is made better is good for MY economy. If American companies made good cars I would buy them and I do buy good American cars. I also buy good cars with overseas nameplates too.
The US auto market blew up because of American Consumers. They insisted on buying gas guzzling SUVs instead of hybrids. That is why up to last year FORD had one hybrid and it was a SUV and GM had one or two while Toyota and Honda have SIX MONTH waiting lists for their hybrids and have had waiting lists for more than two years now. Did Americans flock to these cars and insist on American companies building them? NO! They kept buying SUVs and Pickups that people didn't need and so when gas shot up to $4.00 plus a gallon people wanted to get rid of their gas guzzlers. Well the Big Three can't turn their production lines on a dime so people had no other choice but to go with Toyotas and Hondas or Morris Minis and other small, fuel efficient cars.

So it isn't the Car Companies, nor UAW. IT is all three... the car companies, UAW and the consumers who demanded the mega vehicles that they made.

I too have owned several Lincoln Mark VIIs and loved both of them. I was going to move to the Mark VIII when the made a LSD that I liked but they stopped making Marks. I wish they came out with a Mark IX and then a Mark X but instead the consumers demanded a Lincon SUV and then a "Pick-up" truck instead. So Lincoln lost me as a customer and I probably will never go back to them because they decided that two-door autos were no longer worth making. They were wrong, but again it wasn't just Lincoln themselves who made this decision. The consumers wanted a luxury SUV and a luxury pickup truck so Lincon did away with their two door line and replaced it with the Navigator and MKX for SUVs and the Mark LT as a pickup.
Now they can't give them away...
