A 16-year-old California girl who died May 24 after losing control of her car on Interstate 10 was texting on her cell phone moments before the accident, according to police. "I hope it makes a lot of kids think," said Kayla Preuss' mother Kelly. "I don't know how many times I had told Kayla not to text when she was driving."

Bet she was blonde.

I think the alcohol played more a part in her driving and deciding to text while driving...drunk.

Kind of a weird angle to take on this story...to focus on the texting.

16 and stupid sums it up

Although I believe texting while driving is dangerous, this story is a bad example.

Texting, dialing, reading, lighting, shaving, makeup and more are stupid!

"I hope it makes a lot of kids think," said Kayla Preuss' mother Kelly. "I don't know how many times I had told Kayla not to text when she was driving."

Any reason why Mom didn't take her daughter's cell phone away or ground her the second, or third, or fourth time she told her not to text while she was driving and her daughter repeatedly ignored her? Maybe if Mom had put some muscle into her order not to text while driving her daughter might be alive today.

How many times did she tell her not to drink and drive?

ROFL! Mommy thinks the new laws are a good idea. Yeah, you go girl. Laws are apparently gonna undo the effects of being a shitty parent? If the girl doesn't listen to hER about texting, why would she listen to the cop? She clearly had no respect for authority. The mom needs to look in the mirror, right straight at it and go "I raised a stupid child. A child so moronic she would drink, speed, and text on a cellphone all at the same time."

I just don't understand texting on a cellphone period, much less in a damned car. When I had a cellphone, I was texted twice, and both times I simply called the person and asked them what they wanted. I mean what the hell, didn't we invent the telephone to get AWAY from this carrier pigeon bullshit?

How many times did she tell her not to drink and drive? Shoulda sent her a text...

Ditto Chris. It would appear that in this day and age a cell phone appears to be a "right" that teenagers are entitled to and to deprive them of it is somehow inhuman. I don't want to go down the whole "when I was a kid" path cause that could get Monty Pythonesque silly, but you get where I am coming from. I wouldn't care much except for the fact that the majority of cell phone calls and texting is about ABSOLUTE AND UTTER BULLSHIT they are not trying to find a cure for cancer, they are not trying to seal a deal for a major business transaction the majority of the bullshit is "so Kristie said to Madison that Jason really liked her then Madison said to Kristie that she knew that wasn't true cause Justin had said that Jason really liked Jessica so...." you get the idea. Is that kind of crap worth dying for?

Yeah, alst I checked, that was already illegal. Looks like this kid already didn't care what the law had to say anyway.

My parents and their parents had the right idea. The kids were exposed to alcohol from a young age, so all of us grew up understanding it. No deaths form drunk driving in my family; we just don't DO it.

WTF is a 16 yr old kid doing on I-10? I drove tractor-trailers through LA in the early 80's and it was no place for a novice then.

I see we all agree on this one.

I can't count the number of women I see on the freeway with a cell phone in one hand, makeup in the other, and their eyes glued to the rearview mirror.

Multitasking and driving don't mix.

Too true, AU.

When I was sixteen I got hit by a '76 Datsun B210, LOL!. I was standing next to a fire hydrant on Federal Street in Baltimore (where I grew up) waiting to cross the street. The driver hit me and the hydrant at the same time. The driver of the Datsun was ejected through the windshield and struck the sdewalk, skidded into a postbox, and was killed. I got nailed by her hood lip and fender, but survived (obviously) with a dislocated kneecap and a fractured fibula and tibia, though witnesses who saw the accident from the side said it looked like the car struck me full on and wrapped around my body, even though the hydrant was what stopped it, though my legs was in front obscured it.

They called me "Chinese Brother" at school because there was a children's book about the chinese brothers that couldn't be killed.

I saw the driver's body by the post box where she came to rest and she was in pretty bad shape, though she was about twenty feet away. I went to her funeral cuz my mom and dad made me. They made me speak at driver's ed about my experience and felt like a complete loser (which I guess I am anyway for posting the silly story in the firstplace, LOL!)

Good survival story..loser...

Haha! Jus' kiddin'!

LOL

What kind of parents let their kid be out at 2:40 AM?

The parents of dead kids, apparently.

Sounds like a good candidate for a Darwin Award...

I do believe that her actions were illegal under California's new cell phone driving laws.

However, I am not sure if they were in effect at the time she died.

I tell my employees that if I find out they are texting, talking or using a cell phone will driving on company business they will be dismissed. Have not had to test this policy yet.

Abso fing lutely.

You have a duty #1 to the other drivers and #2 to yourself to ensure the 4,000 weapon you are operating is done so in a safe and responsible manner.

hmmmm...kidz who can afford gas...cell phones AND alcohol?

God be with her stupid-arse parents.

Where I work there is a young lady who is a "texting addict". I don't think she does it while driving but the other morning she was while walking....straight into a door. She even admitted it wasn't the first time. I asked her if she also does it while driving and she claimed not but I told her I don't believe her. We both laughed about it but I sure hope I don't hear about her having a terrible accident.

Will she have a cell phone in her hand at the funeral?

However, I am not sure if they were in effect at the time she died.

She may have been right but now she's dead right.

This kinda shit should go on people's tombstone.

Death by stupidity.

Though the fact that she was drunk and speeding might account for a good part of the result.

I text while driving drunk all of the time. On my way to work this morning I killed somebody's dog. At least I think it was a dog. It was wearing a bookbag.

I tell my employees that if I find out they are texting, talking or using a cell phone will driving on company business they will be dismissed. Have not had to test this policy yet.

Before you do, I would advise writing a formal policy against cellphone use while driving. Start with a warning and then the consequences should get more severe...leading up to dismissal.

If you don't write it down then any employee can just say they didn't know about it and then sue you for wrongful termination.

There are many things you shouldn't do while driving, texting on the phone is just one of them.

Texting and playing with the CD player. This is nothing new.

101, was that dog on a school playground? I always hit those while I'm posting on drudge with my blackberry. Why do they sound like kids?

was there pb&j on your bumper, 101?

"""Why do they sound like kids?"""

I'm guessing it's something to do with size. You know, mid size dog = small child = similar vocal attributes. Also, the same size of bump while running them over and similar amounts of blood on the bumper can be very misleading.

It's not too difficult to figure it out though. Dogs have small feet, hence they wear smaller footwear. Kids don't wear shoes of any kind.

They made me speak at driver's ed about my experience and felt like a complete loser (which I guess I am anyway for posting the silly story in the firstplace, LOL!)

Loser? I don't think so...hell-SHE'S the one that died. I guess that made HER the loser. In the shitstorm sweepstakes-you won...
