Thousands of prisoners at more than 20 federal facilities now have email access, a program expected to be offered in all 114 U.S. prisons within three years. The program reduces the use of regular mail, which sometimes hides drugs and other contraband.

Now you won't know if someone you're emailing in cyberspace might actually be sitting at a computer inside some federal pen. Of course they could give outsiders a clue via their email address -- "Convict No. ##### @ FolsomPrison.com" -- which might give outsiders a clue.

The prison officials are going to have to really keep an eye on some of these prisoners' incoming and outgoing emails. But then introducing some computer illiterate prisoners to new computer skills might have its advantages to society when they get out of prison if it helps them get a job. Guess it's a toss-up.

I'd be a tad reluctant to respond to an email from "9CountsMurder1@folsom.com"

A survey of most of those emails strangely contained vaiations on this same message;

'GET ME THE FUCK OUTTA HERE'

Great. so now they can work for the telemarketing assholes. Nothing in the way of cheap labor eh? How they use it during the off hours isn't anyones business... yeah....

Sounds like a new 'captive' market segment for the enlarge your penis pill and herbal viagra pushers.

What ever happened to bread and water, no smoking, no soda, no desert and no tv?

You can't recieve emails on any of those things, silly.

It seems like this may be an okay idea, it's another carrot to use for inmates that are obeying the rules.

I still think we need to build ultra max prisons for the worst of the worst. A concrete box that's nothing more than a storage space until the prisoner dies.

Shawn: But that was the point of ending slavery and criminalizing poverty...

#13: "1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted..."

The fact they are paying them ANYTHING is a civic duty-- they could just have enslaved the disproportionately black residents of prisons. (that is sarcastic)

I think this makes sense, especially if they can phase out snail mail entirely. With email, people can't sneak in contraband and it's easier to scan it for keywords, codes, etc. Copies of all correspondence can also be archived for analysis.

The odds of them actually phasing out regular mail seem pretty slim. People who have no clue how to use a computer would claim they are being put at an unfair disadvantage. Just another misleading explanation of a prison benefit that should not exist.

Has anyone considered that if getting e-mails becomes a right for prisoners, we will be forced to supply them with enough computers to carry the load. Is anyone wondering who is going to pay for all of this equipment?

I can just imagine the scam emails comming now. They are criminals and will find a way to scam people through this.

Just hide under your bed so they won't see you.

How much viagra and mortgage refinancing can one prisoner buy?

Maybe they will get a lucky email re. the canadian lottery or that Nigerian multi millionaire!
