Pneumonia would be a socially acceptable disease to blame his death on. It's one of the ramifications of AIDS from what I understand.

Lesson three: the death rate for pneumonia requiring hospitalization is 10-25%. In fact, many people get sicker when they get into the hospital, from pneumonia, bacteria associated with respirators and all kinds of other things. Sometimes there isn't more to the story, except your need to think the worst.

My grandfather died from pneumonia. That was over 50 years ago, prior to AIDS, so you can rule that out. This actually may be a result of the whole super bacteria / antibiotics ain't what they used to be thing.

50 years ago they only had penicillin, not the wide range of antibiotics and treatments for pneumonia they have today.

I don't care why he died. I raised the possibility that there may have been more to the story since he was so relatively young to have died from this AND had a pulmonary specialist from his previous (and in remission) lung disorder.

I've lived through a spontaneous pnuemothorax and am currently recovering from pneumoniarrrrgghhh!!!

Probably waited til the infection was way advanced. To jump to the conclusion that it was likely AIDS is quite a strange leap. IMO

It's really not that strange of a leap, I first thought it was AIDS-related, as did friends of mine when I told them about his death.

What's strange is a person dying from just pneumonia when they are as wealthy and young as he was.

The stats are out there, African-Americans have much higher rates of both AIDS and engagement in activities that promote the illness (sexual lifestyles and criminal drug use). To deny something so obvious is not helping anyone.

And so what if Bernie Mac was bi or gay and died of AIDS? Is that somehow the end of the world? Was he like some kind of heterosexual, healthy-living role model for America or something?

Yes they reported that the sarcoidosis was in remission, but they also were reporting that he was doing well, and would be out of the hospital within a week.

His publicist was lying through her teeth.

See ignorance is rampant in America! The man did not have aids he suffered from a lung disease by the name of sarcoidosis, which is an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body's organs.

So before anyone starts making statements regarding his demise all you need to do your homework.

I can't believe they couldn't do something to save this guy! How can a treatable illness like pneumonia kill someone in this day and age??? What a waste!!!

Sad, very sad. I liked the man. My husband has had two bouts with pneumonia, he treats it like the common cold, just an annoyance. I keep trying to tell him that pneumonia is not a simple thing, that it is serious. He won't listen to me. Perhaps now he will.

This is a shame. Now, mind you, I've only ever seen him in the Ocean's movies (and hell, in 12 he did almost nothing at all, got thrown in the can early on), but the man was funny as hell.
